Thyme Cuttings Made Easy! As a member of the Mint family, Thyme is very easy to grow from the cuttings of adult plants, and possible even grocery store stems if they are fresh enough! It is not hard at all and doesn't require any tools or equipment.
In this video, I'll show you how to root Thyme cuttings in water and then transition them either to pots, or for planting straight into your spring garden. The process takes about 2 weeks to root them, and even though they are woody perennials, its easier than you think! :-)
2022 is most definitely the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track! For more information on all your gardening questions, check out my other videos!:

Fun fact: if you cut the stems shorter so that you’re just dealing with the softer woody branches, and then clear away with your thumbnail the first 2 inches at the bottom, you can just stick them into potting soil and keep them underneath a cloche. They’ll root even quicker. No water changes needed.

One year, when I had a plot at the community garden at the Catholic church, I planted parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme, like the Simon and Garfunkel song. I just grew them as one season herbs. At the end of the season, I harvested them and hung them in bundles so they could dry. Or, I might have used my dehydrator to dry them. It's been a long time ago. I did not grow any herbs last year and the garden bed that I have is about half the size of the one that I had at the Catholic church. I still want to grow tomatoes and I'm going to try kale and want to try zucchini again. I always plant marigolds. If bunching onions count as herbs, I did grow those last year and will grow them again this year. I also want to try a different variety of cucumber. For me, every time I get to garden, it is like a brand new learning experience.

The snow is off my thyme. I will check tomorrow to see if I have some green showing, if not I will try a few branches and hope. I am also starting some for family members this year from seed but if this works I will have lots to give away. Thanks Jeff.

How often do you water the thyme cuttings indoors?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms Год назад
Hi Dale, I root the cuttings indoors in water...after they send out roots, they get planted and then watered maybe once every 10 days? They are pretty forgiving and like it on the dry side.

I've done it successfully a few times, but it depends on how fresh it is...nothing can be guaranteed. You'll know within a week or so if its going to work.

what can you inform about cilantro and getting a season out of the plants.. or do we just accept it bolts early?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms
@TheRipeTomatoFarms 2 года назад
Hey Carla...harvest the Cilantro as much as possible and keep it cool and moist when the warm weather hits. It also sprouts and grows FAST, so if you get a batch that bolts, start another one right away....the seeds are ultra cheap! 🙂 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Tf_0DfVKQOY.html

Whats the best pot for thyme? I grew 3 4inch pots from cuttings following your video, all great. But then they all died after I transplanted (I used your DIY growing medium). I bottom watered so defintely not over watered. Maybe I should give up on pot all together... I need at least 6 thyme plants in kitchen as use it alot.

Can thyme be grown indoors year round? Or, do they have to be planted outside?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms

Most definitely they can Dolly. Enough light and good soil, it makes an excellent indoor plant!

I know that this video is over a year old but if anyone could give me advice on where I went wrong with my thyme I would appreciate it. I bought living thyme from a grocery story, very green and bushy. Looked super healthy. I take it home, water it (it was in a little 3 inch deep 2 inch wide pot. I separate out the end of the stems because they were very tangled. I leave it overnight with the intention to pot it up the next day but when I come back to it a lot of the tips are drooping. I take it out to pot it up, and it's revealed that rather than A Thyme Plant, what I've got is 50 or so individual single thyme plant stems. I pot it up as is because I couldn't find much information about what to do after bringing a living herb plant back from the store. It continues to droop and dry in its new pot. I only lightly dampened the new soil (cactus mix, was said to work just as well since it likes drainage). I give in and break up the bunch into 4 parts so that the stems have more room. Here is a definite mistake I think. Possessed by the knowledge of something I read somewhere a while back I (like an idiot) cut the bottom inch off the root mass "to promote new root growth". This definitely was me shooting myself in the foot, but I'll point out the plant was already dramatically failing before this. Did I mess up from that initial watering when I brought it home? It was a tiny pot and the water easily drained out the bottom. Should I have left it in the itty bitty pot??? I did read that cactus soil would work but maybe it doesn't hold the bare minimum water for the thyme? I fully acknowledge the root chop was stupid. I just wanna grow some herbs :(

Question!? My mom has a thyme plant in a container similar to the one you show taking cuttings from. I live in a pretty cold area of the North West US (-20ish times in winter). We have left this plant on the front steps exposed to the same elements as the front lawn. It comes back every year thicker hand heather yet I keep hearing I need to keep it warm. To your knowledge or anyone out there's is there a breed that is harder than the normal Mediterranean that I hear about?

Thanks a ton for this. I have some lemon thyme I'd rather not lose to winter. Question, can they be kept exclusively indoors? I'd like to scale the plant up to a larger pot, take clippings and plant outside each season. But also have a reliably healthy plant indoors for year round.
