Lol! Not what I was expecting, but an informative and educational video, regardless. I just finished watching Clay's video, explaining his son's first hog kill, that you were part of. Nice job to you all! Good hunting buddy!

I collect feathers birds of prey all kinds that are out in the wild. I'm an archer and use turkey feathers for my arrow shafts. I store my feathers in a cedar box just for feathers would like to help you out but I use these as well, One more thing I also make quills in a pin set which I give out to deserving friends and they write well, 🕶"

You can fix creased vanes from the feathers that you'd normally throw away with steam ;)

I find it hard to believe that you consider yourself somewhat of a professional in feather preservation slash preparation, when you just throw away feathers that were plucked. Because according to you they are useless like that. But if you did actually know allot about bird feathers then you would know that they are easy to fix. Same way as a bird grooms itself, you put them between your fingers and run them up the feather in the direction that the branches are growing in and they will adhere to one another or interlock with one another if you want to get technical with it. But they have microscopic velcro like material that helps in keeping them together So that they can easily catch wind and to do so there cannot be any room for air flow to leak through. But commonly misconcepted by many. Is that a bird itself is The only one capable of repairing its own feathers when that's completely untrue and the feathers are self-maintained in a way. All it takes is a little bit of help and the feathers will do the rest of the work on their own.

I have had a sweet deal with my buddies that all shoot right wing while I started with left wing. Always come out of the better end of that deal, they're much better turkey hunters.lol.

Cut my wings and fans off being careful to be gentle and keep everything aligned. Then I carefully expand them and set the flesh ends in borax powder. After a season they become set and depending on quality and size, either go on the stack or made into wall displays. The Merriam's wild turkey around here can have an amazing range of color and iridescence. Had been giving, or trading, any overflow to a friend who used them in artworks. But he died last Fall.

@Debra Charles Sorry, Debra, I don't know much about the hygienic aspect, but the borax doesn't seen to kill the beneficial maggots that strip away the flesh preventing rot, but it seems to help draw out a lot of moisture, and prevent infestations of other undesirable pests. I don't do a lot past lightly brushing away dust and anything else that's gathered during the year I leave them to cure up. A professional taxidermist would be able to tell you more. All I know is that removing all presence of meat and a good drying leaves them looking beautiful for years.

I give mine a light misting of Permethrin, then let dry before storing. I have not had a problem with insects doing this.

Be sure and check your states hunting regulations: here in Nebraska it is illegal to sell ANY PART of a game animal/ bird. I doubt you'd ever get in any trouble, but worth noting..
