I just replaced the original battery that came in my 2010 5.4 F-150, it lasted 7 1/2 years! I almost bought an optima, but decided to get the motorcraft 65 850. The motorcraft was $132 vs $210 for the optima. I used versachem silicone grease to protect the terminals, it's all the parts store had. Thanks for another great video.

I totally agree on the Motorcraft batteries! Went through 3 Walmart (under warranty is why I keep using them)never start batteries in about 2 1/2 years. I did have to charge it up earlier this winter because the car sits a lot in the winter but other than that no issues.

It really does a good job and if you use a 20 oz plastic soda bottle cut the top and stick the whole terminal in the fluid after getting most of the copper sulfate corrosion off them. Both Motorcraft and Interstate batteries are made by the same company in the US. The most common battery failure problem is owners. They don't clean the post and connections. They discharge the battery three or four times till it's dead. Then they don't check the fluid level. Hell some don't even have a hold down bracket. Which that alone will shake a battery to an early grave!

FordTechMakuloco I just dumped one. I ran a jump start 100v on it for an hour from a wall charger. It went from slow click, to fast click to nothing. So, I was done, myself. Never, ever had that happen. Usually, you get a click to drag start to good start. I have that with my Chally in winter, even with a huge HEMI battery, or motorcycles. If it doesn't give me a good start after an overnight on the charger, out it goes. I don't drive much, and I can get at least 5 years from a battery if I keep after it. Long enough to forget the order to jump.start one and have to go check.

So if grease on a battery terminal is such a great improvement you would think the manufacturer of the vehicle would do this to all their new vehicles as a matter of course. Nothing beats regular inspection/service. Of course the term planned obsolescence originated with Henry Ford. Love your videos and I drove Ford vans and pick ups for 40 years. I wish they got better gas mileage but will probably go back because of seating position is more comfortable than my Lexus RX 450h for long trips.

I dont know what your dealer pays flat rate for a battery service but ours is like a 10th or 2. We dont have the time to waste doing all of what you did. To pass along a trick an old timer passed along to me...Unhook terminals, Get a gallon jug, go get the hottest water you can find, pour it slowly from a foot above (like a waterfall) onto the terminals. This will clean them better than any spray. Trust me. Try it.

many videos on here and other research shows 80% of all batteries are made by Johnson Controls - that company makes Walmart everstart, Diehard, Interstate and Duralast --- all are the exact same and same specs - the reason you pay more for some is the warranty is longer so you pay more but are covered longer BUT its the same plastic, lead and acid

I apply baking soda or battery cleaner first, then rinse off and take to the pressure washer to get caked up corrosion out the terminals. Finally I scrub posts and terminals as well as apply dielectric grease to the terminals and posts. I can understand not pressure washing in cold weather as well as risking splattering acid everywhere.

Like you said, Johnson Control makes a lot of the brands. Their top of the line batteries have the "cut off" corners on the fill caps as on the battery he is installing. For 50 years I've used NOCOR battery felt rings around the terminals and their red gooey spray on the terminals . Never have any corrosion and Average 7 yrs for a battery or until the starter doesn't sound as peppy. PS my brother has several electric golf carts and uses the spray also with no corrosion.

you may want to be careful when you use a dielectric grease which is a insulator. in this case the pressure of battery clamping can remove the grease therefore current flows. but it may restrict electric current in some condition grease dry and change their characteristic over time. so i would not apply the grease on contacting area, ie battery post.
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 10 лет назад
It will never happen. This is way better than rot as shown on the neg battery terminal in the video. I have used this for years and it works amazingly well.
@cosmicdust22

you like to use the grease too much. clean contact is better than directed coated surface. dielectric grease should be used only preventing moisture or acidic environment. in this case, coating outer exposured area. try my method, you will never have problem.
@cosmicdust22
@cosmicdust22 10 лет назад
thought experiment. if a clean contact can flow 1000 A maximum. grease coated contact can flow less tan 1000 A. say 300 A max. current flow is proportional to contact area.
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 10 лет назад
We used to use the spray coating outer method it corrodes right through seen it many times, the grease works perfect you only need a bit where it contacts the post and more on the outside to protect from enviorment and acids.

Aww, didn't rinse out the battery box. Then applies a dielectric grease to the posts and terminals is a big NO - apply AFTER attaching dry, clean posts & terminals are secured / tightened. Why? Because even the dielectric grease is NOT an electrical conductor! Although the grease will not allow corrosion, it will also not allow for an electrical connection. Apply grease (the red spray on) AFTER attaching the terminals to the battery posts. But thanks for posting!!!
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 5 лет назад
Rinsing the tray is a good idea yes but the drain at this shop is in the breeze way so its hard to block shop traffic, pull the battery and flush it. Dielectric grease is the absolute best way to protect your terminals and will not impede the flow of current to the starter. I could squeeze an entire tube of dielectric grease onto those terminals and it still would transfer current perfectly. Think about it you are stating it either will not allow the flow of current causing a no start or it will impede the flow of current (which is resistance) and heat up to the point of melting the battery. None of your statements make sense, oh btw one the manufacturers suggested uses for the grease is battery terminals.

FordTechMakuloco I just bought an 06 Fusion with 120,000 km's on it and it's the original battery that came with the vehicle(looks new). It still holds a charge now but the CCA(Cold Cranking Amps) are half then what they once were. I phoned Ford and I couldn't believe that it was only $134.00(CDN) for the battery. I am concerned about the CCA because I think it's only 550. I had batteries barely start with 725 CCA and -40C. But this wasn't running full synthetic either.

Dielectric grease does not conduct electricity. He shouldn't have put between the terminals and and the wires. Put the wires on the battery, THEN you can put dielectric grease on.

This is exactly why I've started doing my own work. Took my car in once, they told me how much repairs cost and I saw how much it cost if I do it, I've only spent around $400-500 for the entire suspension except struts. Saved $400 on 4 parts the mechanic wanted to order at the same part store the order from. I've probably saved $3000 in labor. What I paid for the car. Lol

dielectric grease is typically used for high voltage connections where rubber is used in the connectors, the grease is conductive so it lubricates without significantly limiting current flow. It won’t hurt anything to use it, however it doesn’t help much. You’d be better off using something that fights against corrosion better. Just my $0.02

Dielectric grease has a very very low amount of resistance. You'll need some high end equipment to see the difference even at the low 12v ranges. The incredibly low drop is worth it for the corrosion protection it gives.

What causes the corrosion? I recently purchased a battery for my 07 ford expedition. I thoroughly cleaned the corrosion from my cables before putting the cables on the new battery with the circular pads that go on the terminals. And I also sprayed the protective spray on the terminals and cables and it still corroded after a few months....

I had no corrosion after nearly 15 years with the same two original batteries in my Toyota HiAce. They recently had to be replaced, but Toyota could only provide eastern European batteries. Not Japanese batteries. I don't have a good feeling about these new, expensive batteries. They lost quite a bit of charge in a couple of days the first time I charged them - before I put them in the van. Time will show. I might have to talk to Toyota about getting new ones. But I somehow doubt that new ones from the same factory will be better. They were made in Czechia, if I remember correctly.

Donald Pauli dealerships blast the terminals with brake cleaner. Works great. Some radios lose there channels and you need to recode the radio if you disconnect the battery. You better have the code or the dealership will need your registration and ID drivers license. They may charge to recode the radio.

Yes - but first you need to apply either a terminal cleaner or baking soda solution to neutralize the acid (possibly several times, if the terminals are heavily corroded) - and THEN rinse everything well. If the terminals are badly corroded, it's a good idea to remove the battery and thoroughly rinse the battery tray, and also check for and treat any acid in or under the battery tray and on the battery hold-down

You removed the Negative Terminal first. I know that it breaks the GROUND, but if you remove the Positive Terminal, you have no power to anything. And lots of people forget to clean out the battery box. A good general cleaning, followed by using a wire brush to clean out any rust, and a coat of rust inhibitor paint works wonder. Once the box is cleaned, coat the bottom with baking soda to cut the corrosion.
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco 8 лет назад
+jdmeaux There is no power flow if either terminal is removed as there is a break in the circuit so no path for the electrons to loop to If the negative is removed I can touch the positive terminal to the body all day long and nothing. Same thing goes for the old Ford that ran positive side grounds. I do agree on the battery box though we would wash then out al the time when replacing batteries.

walmart everstart has always lasted me at least 3 years on my 2001 Taurus. One I replaced today was 4 years. I guess I've just been lucky. It was overcharged when I took it out. Sides were bloated from the overcharge on the battery going bad. Got up to 950 amps 150 over the 800. I checked the alternator. It was charging from 14.2 volts cold to 14.05 when settled out. So I don't think the voltage regulator was bad. I also tested with RPM at 2k. It stayed at 14.05. So I assume it was just the battery age / short inside the battery. I might try motorcraft next time. I've always like thier products. Especially the belts, I've had squeaking issues with other belt brands despite new pullies in proper alignment. I will say on my Jeep Everstart corroded like crazy with spray on grease. The Taurus has different terminals. They don't seem to corrode as much, but I also switched to a type like what you were using from a tube to get a thicker layer on. They have battery cleaner that turns pink from yellow when battery acid is still present. It didn't look like yours did. I usually stop cleaning once it stops turning pink.
