Hard flat surface + press firmly = VERY good advice. Our ironing board was completely useless -- cutting board worked really well.

What Happens if My iron is TOO HOT. I but black easyweed down and layered it with siser glitter. When I lifted it looked like it was off centered and a bit of a glue residue. Does that mean that my heat setting was too high? I was doing multiple shirts. When I looked my heat setting was above cotton by mistake. I just want to know if that would have caused this to happen

@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 8 лет назад
+Vikki Nagygeller If you REALLY needed to, you could use a brown paper bag or a sheet of white paper. These types of paper hold a lot of ambient moisture whereas Parchment Paper is on a roll inside a box which keeps the moisture content low.

You don't need to press the first layer for the full duration. Just apply it until you can peel the carrier. Then when you apply your second layer, you will press the entire design for the full time.

I'd like to see a video explaining more in depth the choosing of the right iron. I purchased 4 different irons from different local department stores after seeing this video, only to find that none of them ever reached 300 degrees and the auto shut off feature that literally every iron has now, makes this MUCH more difficult.
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 7 лет назад
We ended up buying a laser thermometer... we had the same issues as you. Our dry iron didn't get above 120° and our steam iron (steam turned off of course) reached over 400° near the tip.
@luckystickerco.7549
@luckystickerco.7549 7 лет назад
SiserNorthAmerica, what do you suggest then? If your own iron wasn't consistent, is this still possible with a home iron and is it going to last on the garment?
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 7 лет назад
Our ToastMaster iron is consistent. At it's highest, it reaches over 400°. If we dial it back, we can get a consistent heat that works when applied with the right amount of time and pressure. I'm not endorsing that particular iron or brand, it's the only one we have in the office. But tons of people use only a home iron and not only have excellent results, but many actually have businesses where they print from home with an iron.

Great video. Thanks for posting. But I have two irons and I purchased an IR thermometer to check the heat and here's what I found. My Rowenta iron set on it's highest setting only gets to approximately 140 degrees. I purchased a Black and Decker 1600 watt iron to run a test and it only get's to approximately 120 degrees set on highest setting. Do any hand held irons really get up to 305 degrees? What is the brand you suggest? Thanks.
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 8 лет назад
+Mike Keefe We don't have a brand we recommend. In fact, the iron we use is an older Toastmaster iron. I would say to test some material out with your irons and see if they get hot enough to adhere the material. On our iron, if we turn it all the way up, it will literally melt the carrier sheet, so I'm sure no two irons are the same.
@MissMary821
@MissMary821 8 лет назад
+Mike Keefe Are you sure its getting to 120 Fahrenheit and not 120 Celsius? Just a thought. I have a Rowenta also and it goes up to 400 something Fahrenheit on the highest setting.
@DArkwIng2
@DArkwIng2 Год назад
remember that the 300 degree in this video is in Fahrenheit scale and not Celcius. make sure that the IR thermometer is set to Fahrenheit scale. (note that the iron is reflective surface and the reading will be wrong. you could plase the iron upside down and lay a cotton fabrik sheat over it thigtly and measure the cotton temperature

Does it hurt the vinyl or the life of the vinyl if you leave the home iron on longer than 15 sec? I have been doing it for 30 sec if not a little longer.
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 8 лет назад
+Shelly Ray If we're talking about EasyWeed, you can press it for just a few seconds... try 5 seconds and try peeling the backing. If it starts to lift, recover and try for another 5. If using a heat press, you can simply tack it for 1 second, peel the carrier and then finish for 10-15 seconds. 30 seconds is probably overkill.

What if your blade is to high and it cuts all the way thru and each letter is completely separated. Ct an you still use it? Every time i cut glitter HTV, it always cuts all the way thru the material. But, Can I still use these single pieces to make my shirt?
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 7 лет назад
You can still use the separate letters HOWEVER... you'll have a difficult time removing the carrier after application. IN a normal situation, you have the sharp corners of the carrier sheet to lift with your finger and remove. We would recommend testing some more with your blade depth and doing small test cuts. This way you can dial in your machine without possibly wasting material.

I’m having trouble with the gold easyweed (never had any issues with the red, green, orange etc.) sticking to the carrier sheet while doing a hot peel. Same with Cricut metallic gold. So I usually place the parchment paper back over it and press it some more only to have the same problem. Usually, some parts stick on the shirt while some stick to the carrier sheet and it becomes a mess. I’ve now ruined 3 tees using the gold HTV and I’m at a loss. I use a Cricut easy press and I follow all the application instructions for Siser. Anybody know what I might be doing wrong? The other colors come off the carrier sheet smooth and even, it’s just the gold.

@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 7 лет назад
Stephanie, I'm assuming you mean cover sheet which is different than a carrier sheet. You can use parchment paper as a cover sheet or purchase a reusable, non-stick cover sheet from an authorized Siser distributor. When cutting, the shiny side should be DOWN on the cutter... when applying, the shiny side should face UP. Hope this helps! -Keith

If you have applied the vinyl and it does peel after washing, will it reapply with the iron or will it never adhere properly from now on?
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 8 лет назад
If it came off completely, I wouldn't recommend reapplying after it's been through the wash. If a corner lifts, then you can hit it again with a press and it should be OK. You may need to increase your pressure, heat or application time, as it shouldn't be peeling off after one wash.

Absolutely! So you can wash just you would normally wash any other garment. After you apply your Siser HTV to that textile, wait at least 24 hours before washing. Use regular detergent, normal wash cycle. Hang drying may preserve the finish, but its optional. If you use the dryer, avoid use high temps, just a normal setting. DO NOT use Bleach or liquid fabric softener.

Where you saying heat temp between cotton and wool for home iron?
@jaysmithminaj
@jaysmithminaj 7 лет назад
is it?
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 7 лет назад
Yes, depending on your iron, you'll want to set it around the cotton setting. Every iron is different and some don't get as hot as others so you'll have to test on a scrap piece of fabric until you know your iron is dialed in. -Keith

Can anyone tell me what the purpose is of Stretch heat transfer vinyl vs. regular heat transfer vinyl?
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 6 лет назад
Stretch is thinner and stretchier than regular EasyWeed. It's meant for stretchy performance wear but can just as easily be used on most other fabrics. The other difference is that EasyWeed comes in more colors than stretch.

I need some help: Im using the gold metallic HTV and as I was trying to put a different colour of vinyl next to it , the iron touched the gold part and it faded/melted away.. any tips to avoid that? Is it because my iron is too hot? I also added a metallic HTV to a sleeve cuff, but I need to attach an extra piece of fabric ext to it and I'm afraid to iron it and ruin the design! because if he iron touches the vinyl it literally disappears. Anything helps! Thanks!

Your iron may be a little too hot! Also, make sure you are using a coversheet of some sort- like, parchment paper. If you would like to contact our Tech Support at Support@siserna.com , we can try and help you further!

I'm not questioning your expertise but how come many videos suggest, Including Cricut which is my cutting machine to use a pressing mat? Just curious. My iron is cheap and it does not have material setting just numbers. I know its a piece of doo doo but all I have right now. I'm holding it on for about 30 seconds. I did it for 45 seconds or more at first but those were gifts and I do not know if they peeled.

Hey Bobby, great question! Most companies recommend a heat press because it applies even pressure to the entire design at once. sometimes with sensitive materials the iron can actually leave 'dents' in the material in the shape of the iron if there's too much / too little pressure. There's also an issue where the iron may leave bumps where the steam holes on the bottom of the iron are. Of course we understand everybody has a different situation when applying vinyl, so that's why we make these videos to help limit the amount of mistakes! (also on our website we have the recommended application settings for all our materials, but a good rule of thumb is 15 seconds of pressure at the highest iron setting)

Not helpful to me. Never used HTV before. I hand cut my design on the back of the vinyl. Didn't tell me which side to put down onto my cotton item! My transfer piece looks the same on both sides. Is the clear layer the adhesive? Is the lighter dull side that I traced onto the adhesive? Okay, so watching other videos I learned that the dull lighter side is the adhesive so it goes onto my item pretty side up. Then I cooldown and peel the clear layer off.

can I use a normal a4 paper instead of parchment paper??
@SiserNorthAmerica
@SiserNorthAmerica 7 лет назад
You "could"... normal paper isn't as thin as parchment paper... therefore it doesn't let as much heat through. You'd have to increase your pressure and application time using a regular sheet of paper.

If using a home iron, invest in a digital temperature gun to make sure it's getting hot enough. We tested 2 irons in the office. One was about 300° and the other wouldn't get above 180°. Proper temperature, applying enough pressure, and applying for a sufficient amount of time will yield best results. As always, we recommend testing beforehand. -Keith
