😂 I’m here wondering the same, quite a few of these vids out on using a cheap little Amazon o scope to set amp gains….. Yet not ONE of them tells us wtf we’re using or not even a mention of why the settings are where they are. 😂 PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! Make the video! If you don’t I’m going to as soon as I figure the stuff out! 😅

You should check the lower half wave for clipping as well. Sometimes the top and bottom half cycles clip at different amplitudes.

Great video, but could you explain to us how to set up the oscilloscope so that we can get the size of the sine waves to match what you have here in the video I bought a brand new one from Amazon and I’m having a really difficult time getting the wave high enough where I can see when it clips or notinitial set up is what I’m asking for help. How did you prepare it to do this test and what settings do you have it at?

Help please im new to car audio and could use some advice on certain settings. 3:56 subwoofer settings(mines a bit different). My pioneer headunit has a section on the menu called SUB W CTRL and in that menu it has cutoff frequency 50hz to 200hz with increments in-between And it has output level -24 to +6 As well as a 3rd setting which is Slope level -6 to - 12. I currently have cutoff set to 200hz(mainly so I can hear more out of the sub so it seems louder) Amp crossover is also set to 200hz(its the max setting on amp crossover) The output level I have set to 0(can I go up on that and my subs be louder assuming I check for distortion from head unit on rca cables to make sure I'm not sending clipped signal to amp? And i guess id also have to reset gain with o-scope) And the Slope thing I've got not clue about so i left it at -6

Don’t unhook your subs I bought the same one myself it just came today I’ve got mine wired at 2 ohms right now and I’m gonna tune it hooked up. Gonna do the rcas first to find out my max volume on the HU and then plug those in and move to the speaker outs on the amp. Just make sure your bass knob is all the way up and the gain all the way down to start and just slowly work your way up until the wave flattens or goes bonkers like his did.

40hz -10 db for subwoofers 1khz -5db for door speakers.40hz 0 db is where u find your clipping point this is the first step then u set your gains remember all settings at 0 or flat ! Keep subwoofer level and bass boost off!!

I used this oscilloscope last night and could not get anything to clip. It also would not work on the bridged channel of my 2,400 w or my 5000 w mono amp. Am I doing something wrong? What is the possibility that the gains would be able to go all the way up?
@kylesalls9826
@kylesalls9826 Год назад
I thought most kenwood decks wont give full rca volts with sub level at 0 , most say max it and then its higher voltage cleaner signal less gain needed 🤔
@pitspeedtv
@pitspeedtv 11 месяцев назад
You aren’t measure signal clipping. You are measuring the voltage drop of the Headunits Pre-amps. The signal is set at 0dB (in the test tone)… the signal won’t ever clip. The headunits go higher (and clip) because they are tuned to output at -6dB. Your headunits are therefore ill prepared to supply enough current to output the 0dB signal. So the voltage drops and the sine wave distorts as a result. You are simply finding the 0dB level on the headunit, so that you can output a clean 0dB signal to the amp. Once you have established that, you put your o-scope away. Now its just a matter of matching your max signal output to your max amplifier output as governed by your load (speaker). You put a multimeter on the amp output and turn the gain knob until it reaches the target voltage. Target Voltage = [square root of: MAX-RMS x Resistance] 100W @ 4 ohms = 20V 100W @ 8Ohms = 28.28V This numbskull was measuring and calibrating based on his in-line capacitor Max-RMS ROFL. Don’t take his advice.

you should just change the voltage to 20v instead of 10v, also 5ms helps

@jrbird7571
@jrbird7571 Год назад
Unplug the RCAs at the amp and connect the scope to the RCAs that input the scope. Ground lead on the shield and positive to the center pin. Make sure they're not clipping - which they weren't at full volume. Then reconnect the RCAs, disconnect the speaker wires and connect the scope to them for amp gains.
@pitspeedtv
@pitspeedtv 11 месяцев назад
You connect the scope to the amplifier INPUTs. This will show when the pre-amplification of the head unit maxes out a 0dB Signal. Note where that is on your headunit. Keep the head unit playing that 0dB 55Hz signal at maximum. Then put the oscilloscope away. You’re done with it. Pull out a multimeter, turn it to V~60. Put the +/- leads on the +/- terminals of the amp output channel. Turn the gain until you reach the voltage that equals the RMS-Max of your speaker. That voltage value is: Voltage = [Square Root of: RMS-Max x Resistance of speaker] Square Root of 100W @ 4 Ohms = 20V Turn the gain knob until it hits 20V. Feel free to go a tad over (21V) if you find it hard to get exactly 20V to stick. Most music is mastered at -6dB, so you have lots of wiggle room to go higher since the signal output will be suppressed in real-world application.

And where is the oscilloscope connected. You do realize that once you connect speakers whatever you thought was not clipping doesn't count anymore because now it has a reactive load right

If the amp shows youre clipping, why bother with the o scope? Increase gain until the clip light comes on and then back down a smidge.

Without load !? You must test clipping with load. Inductive or resistive for actual response.
@stormyparker8465

This isn't how to set gains. If you want to properly set your gains you need to account for your entire system.. you would start by testing your head unit itself for clipping first and play several different frequency test toned such as 40 Hz, 80Hz, 150Hz, 400Hz, 800,Hz and 1 KHz. You look for clipping from the head unit at all if those frequencies and set your volume for whatever volume that is under the lowest clipped signal. Just because you may not be clipping at all at 40 Hz at full volume doesn't mean your not clipping at 400 Hz at 3/4 volume.. then once your head unit is properly tested then you can go to settings your gains at the amplifier. Otherwise you are just making sure the amplifier itself isn't clipping but that does not good if the amplifier is amplifying an already clipped signal
