You mentioned that Frigate detection would need to work harder if you want to detect more types of objects. Each frame goes through a single algorithm that performs classification at the very end. Classification has minimal cost compared to the steps that preceded it. I don't think anyone should be discouraged from detecting as many object types as they want. The realistic additional overhead is minimal.

Thanks for the clarification! I misinterpreted the docs

"Any corner of the bounding box around the object touches into the zone itself, then it considers the object to have entered that zone." Close, but only the bottom center point of the bounding box is used, effectively reducing bounding boxes to a single point. This can lead to some fairly funny looking zones to accomplish your desired behavior.

Well that answers a lot of the questions I had about some weird behaviour I observed. Thanks for chiming in with the extra information!

Your videos help a lot in the use of FRIGATE, I basically managed to learn most of the things you showed in the video and I find your content about FRIGATE + HOMEASSISTANT super interesting, there are few content creators who really talk easily and practically about this topic . Your videos demonstrate in practice how to solve problems, you won + 1 subscriber from Brazil, congratulations.

Great information. I'm just starting and trying to figure out if I use Protect (I have Unifi ecosystem with UDM Pro) or go the Frigate route. Problem with Unifi is that I will have to pay crazy prices for cameras if I want 4k ($449) or I can get 4 Amcrest cameras for the same price. But then I would need to build a good VM on my ESXi or take my HP Gen 7 and install Frigate on its base. Not sure the best option between Unifi and Frigate. For Frigate it looks like the TPUs are $400 right now if you get them on eBay - that is a lot if you need/want 1 per camera. Any thoughts on my dilemma?
@HomeAutomationGuy
@HomeAutomationGuy 2 года назад
I don't think you need 1 TPU per camera. Why not start with Frigate and a CPU detector on the hardware you already have, and one Amcrest camera to see how it works for you and use that to help make the decision? It's always best to try before you commit all that money!

Great video Alan, just a question of Rasp Pi4. If your video monitoring is inside your house (for when you are away) so monitoring for example entry zone where little or no movement can be detected in normal condition, do you think the Pi would be up to the job? I was going to base my home assistant on PI HW :)
@HomeAutomationGuy
@HomeAutomationGuy 10 месяцев назад
I don't think it would perform very well on a Pi, but you might be able to get away with it if you have a Google Coral TPU. I would suggest trying it and seeing, if you already have the Pi hardware!

@kmschwem

Does it allow for detection of a generic non-fixed object. I'd like the ability to detect moving objects that aren't fixed (e.g. trigger on an unknown object moving across the frame but not a tree blowing in the wind).

This looks really good. Everybody seems to be recommending Blue Iris - but at least this is open source. You use Unifi I think? Do you still use unifi protect in conjunction with frigate (I've heard people say the protect phone app is good) or do you just use frigate now?
@HomeAutomationGuy
@HomeAutomationGuy 2 года назад
I use the Unifi protect app when I want to view my cameras in real-time. The app is really good at scrubbing through historical footage too. I use Frigate when I want to see what objects were detected without having to go through all the footage.
@ryanandrewbaker
@ryanandrewbaker 2 года назад
I don't think anyone is recommending blue iris in 2022. Historically it was great, but it's past it now. Frigate is where it's at.

@HomeAutomationGuy
@HomeAutomationGuy 2 года назад
That's a great idea - I would like that too now! Frigate are working on the ability to upload your own snapshots and classify them as your own type of object, so this should be possible in the future. I think it might be a Premium, paid for feature though. I'll keep my eye out for any solutions to this, and if I figure it out I'll make a video.

Is the TPU just another name for a GPU? I'd have assumed that it was and my i7 NUC in LA (and one ordered for London) definitely has a decentish GPU. Did you compare the performance of your TPU versus of the GPU on your NUC? Also wondering if the object detection of a Reolink camera could serve as the motion detector and then hand filtered motion events to Frigate's object detection. Just looking to take advantage of hardware I have. My NUC sits in an area which people sometimes sleep in so trying to keep fan noise to a minimum.
@Ronaaronhunt
@Ronaaronhunt 2 года назад
Yes, with the HA integration it can act as a motion sensor. A TPU isn't exactly a GPU. A TPU will outperform a GPU at these tasks dollar for dollar.
@yankee-in-london
@yankee-in-london 2 года назад
@@Ronaaronhunt really? what characteristics does a TPU have over a GPU?
@mryo-yobzh9485
@mryo-yobzh9485 2 года назад
@@yankee-in-london That's said at 9:32. TPUs are ASICs (application specific integrated circuits) and as the name implies, they were made for the sole purpose of running AI code. It's like the VPU (video processing unit), while you can decode and encode videos with your cpu, even your smartphone's VPU will vastly outperform it. That's why you can watch the latest 4k atmos hdr movie with almost 0% cpu usage and a long battery life. On intel platform it's called Quicksync and that's what was mistakenly called "gpu" at 11:11.
@walkertron
@walkertron Год назад
11:17 “GPU won’t speed up detection” - I thought this was the purpose of the Nvidia TensorRT detector option? Has anyone tried that, I’d love to use my old 1050 Ti instead of paying $120 for a Coral, if it works decent enough
