I practised a lot, swerving and emergency braking. Last night passing a line of traffic a car decided to suddenly pull out. ... I swerved instantly ... I dont even remember thinking about it but it was fast... the driver also tried correcting back at the last second... I even had time to give nim a nod of my helmet in acknowledgment... So really practise makes things automatic ;)) thanx Greg

Thanks. The more you teach about counter steering the more I have come to appreciate it, it and why I can't do it consciously ( for now ). Now I see that in order to counter steer effectively you have to be comfortable with the bike leaning but then again you said most of us are counter steering sub- consciously ( LORD have mercy ) . But hey, good staff here and like you said, practice.👍👍👍👍

I think the thing with countersteering that people struggle with is that yes the front wheel goes the “wrong way”, but it is VERY BRIEF and because motorcycles don’t generally have a lot of steering lock available, it doesn’t go very far. Countersteering in a car though, which many people have probably seen a lot more of, is generally more pronounced and noticeable. You do a great job of showing and explaining it because it isn’t easy to demonstrate.

@@MotoJitsuhow do you feel about the suggestion that rather than focusing on their arms, some riders might just imagine loosening their grip on the bike with their legs, keeping their body straight and letting THE BIKE swerve around the object and back again? Some argue it achieves the same result and doesn’t have people focus too much on what their arms are doing (which due to lack of steering lock is never much).

to swerve you have to counter steer...that's all anyone needs to practice...everything else is secondary and doesn't really matter. Push hard and fast in the direction you want to go and keep pushing until you clean the obstacle, then counter steer again to bring it back up. Anything else doesn't matter.

The profile of the tire is genius, and it's just a semicircle. It reminds me of a funnel or a glass rolling on the ground. The radius of the rear tire remains larger (the rim of the glass or funnel) and the front tire is the base or outlet. The cup makes a larger radius turn than the funnel because the difference in radius is larger than with the funnel. It's like 》 vs >

That last little bit is everything for me tho. Like the maneuver, I get. Its fun, actually to just do wiggle waggles on the right road. But I'm never sure I'll be able to do something *in time* when the five-piece bedroom set fall out of the truck. Its so infrequent, and so risky, I dunno how I'd practice it. I have good reaction times in things. I play in a band, so I do have some sense of time and coordination. I need some kind of randomizer to do nothing, and then once every fifteen or twenty, or two passes, THEN there's a truck or a mattress. Like, with much love, there's no surprise in this. That's what would build skill for me, I reckon: the surprise factor.

Doing it once to pass your license isn't enough to keep this skill in muscle memory. When a car pulls in front from a cross road you want the habit to help overcome the tendency to freeze up. If I ever get back to riding on the street, I hope I can make a habit to practice this and emergency braking 15 mins at least once every 5 or so rides.

I've always watch the content on your channel, but I swear, the only one thing I never get is the counter-steering part, where you're talking about pushing left and then going left. That stuff always gets me confused!! I'm still learning to ride ( Just got my license ), so as someone who barely ridden anything, I couldn't imagine how it went in my mind, UNTIL NOW. Thanks for actually showing it on the video!! Much appreciated 🙏

When countersteering the point of it is to get the bike to want to fall before correcting it, if you ride a bicycle then you already do that unconsciously

Find a wide-open parking lot. Go forward slowly. Push the right handlebar forward. Watch which direction your bike goes. Push harder the next time. Repeat.

So if you don't counter steer you would have a low side crash? would the front tire just go too far and you lose control?

Yesterday I could avoid being charged by a car driven by a moron circulating in the left lane who suddenly, without using indicators, decided to turn right crossing his Audi in front of me. Fortunately I could swerve it leaning the bike hard to the right passing in front of him, (my only way of escape) and leaning again, this time to the left, to return to my center lane. My reaction was totally intuitive: I didn’t think in pushing/pulling, right or left. I don’t know if that means I had muscle memory or not. I only know that my reflexes are still working but my pulse and anger took a long time to return to normal. Was also luck on my side? I think it helped me, because there was nobody on my right, so I could swerve with no additional interference.

When counter steering, Are you locking out your wheel the opposite way or barely turning the steering wheel? I have a time counter steering, any advice as well?
@onyxon7740
@onyxon7740 Год назад
From what I know you only need to turn the handle bars very little in the opposite direction to counter steer. Even smaller adjustments need to be made at higher speeds, and is called "push steering". It means you push ( very little ) the left side of the handle bars and the bike goes left, likewise you push the right side of the handle bars, you go right. I'm not very experienced but I hope I helped you with my explanation. Have a great day!

Can you address swerving after braking? If during the act of progressive emergency braking you realize that you aren't going to stop in time you release the brake and swerve is there any difference versus swerving with a steady throttle? eg. front forks compressed ect.

well i would appreciate why? cause this advice came.from those rospa guys who follows ipsga method..forgot the main reason but they argue when u instantaneously cut power by clutching in the bike leans faster with the same countersteering input..it was mainly high speed swerve advice above 80kmph though..
@MotoJitsu
@MotoJitsu 2 месяца назад
who cares? one, if you actually have to swerve, you don't have time to do much of anything besides swerve...which means counter steer hard and fast...but if you want to add pulling in the clutch and then releasing it perfectly smooth after the swerve, oh and if you slow down too much, now you may have to downshift too, do you do that after you swerve or while you're swerving? Go practice and figure this out for yourself..too many people just blindly follow what someone says without any practice.
