How to use Counter Steering to Lean and Turn Your Motorcycle

In today’s video we’ll talk about how the motorcycle steering works, and specifically we’ll focus on the concept of countersteering. If you haven’t heard about countersteering yet - this is your lucky day, because today you’ll learn how you can lean your bike really fast and really far, like you never did before. And if you already heard of countersteering, but still have some doubts about it and can’t wrap your head around it - don’t worry, I promise it’ll become super clear by the end of this video. All you have to do - is to listen and watch closely. I divided the whole explanation into small and very easy steps, followed one by one. Again, all you have to do is to watch, listen, and not skip anything, because each step will be very important.

On Moto Control channel you will find videos about motorcycles, motorcycle riding techniques, tips & tricks and online motorcycle training for beginner and advanced riders!
A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Back in Moscow I was a motorcycle instructor and creator of Moto Control Beginner & Advanced motorcycle rider courses, which quickly became the most popular courses in Moscow (well, at least the advanced one😁). My advanced training course makes emphasis on slow speed riding techniques at first (such as good clutch and throttle control, proper riding posture, proper use of vision, etc.), then proceeds to more advanced techniques (such as aggressive braking, trail braking, maximal lean angle). The course incorporates a lot of exercises from DOSAF slow speed riding (similar to police rodeo like motorcycle training in USA), braking and cornering exercises and motogymkhana style riding. And now, since I actively learn English - I decided to post some useful videos for both your and mine practice!😉
🏍️🏍️🏍️
Since everyone writes this, it's necessary, I suppose 🤷, so here we go. Disclaimer: Ride at your own risk, you are responsible for your own safety. Me, Andrey Bodrov and my channel, Moto Control disclaim any liability incurred in connection with the use of riding techniques from this channel. Use common sense, wear full protective gear and ride in a safe and predictable manner!

And if one is really "squimish", just ride a bicycle, two wheeled vehicles ( with rounded patched tires to be exact) can only be steered by leaning, you just feel its direct steering but direct steering does not work at all, try as you may on a two wheeled vehicle :D , it leans for gosh darn reason, something to do with its tires and the fact it only has two wheel :D Physics is magic

Excellent explanation of counter steering. Most of the time, you just hear, "You have to counter steer," but what does that mean? It's the "...brief period when we apply the force on the handle bars to change the lean angle..." Your explanation of initiating lean is the easiest for most people to grasp, and is simple - initiate lean opposite the turn direction so that the bike can turn into the direction desired. Plus, you are not leaning, only the bike is. You are actually staying upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you.
@daszieher
@daszieher Год назад
the "funny" thing is that "you" and the "bike" form a shape-shifting vehicle with a moving centre of mass. "pressing" the bike into the turn (i.e. staying upright while the bike leans) is more related to comfort and oversight than to physics. although keeping the torso largely in one space lowers the moment of inertia around the roll axis facilitating quicker leaning at slower speeds.

9:23 This is the core summary of the entire topic! Countersteer is any change of handlebar direction that is opposite to lean angle. Thanks for separating the leaning from turning! We can even expand the understanding. When we are done turning, we briefly turn the handlebar ‘more inside’ to make the bike stand up. It’s also the same countersteering. We better call it “the principle of countersteer” instead of treating it like some special technique. All self-balancing objects must move its lower body outside in order to lean inside. All bikes change the lean angle by the principle of countersteer. Turn right to lean left, not go left.

Great channel!! Many YT channels talk about bikes, some (often American) talk about 'beginners'bikes referring to 400ccs a 'small' bikes which is really rediculous. 400ccs already are VERY powerful. They recommend these huge bikes without giving any technique tips and exercises. Just buy the thing and figure it out. If you survive the first year. Your channel is obligatory viewing for all bikers, especially beginners. I always recommend learning the basics on a 50cc. Anyway, great channel!

This is so unbelievably well explained. I was sitting here under the impression that riders HOLD their handle bars through the entire corner, and physically turn it throughout the entire corner, sort of "manhandling it". This explains why i kept falling over in my 1st lesson (where the instructor didnt explain anything to me, at all). I kept trying to hold onto the handle bars like if it was a steering wheel, of course the front wheel then couldnt auto-correct at all.

The instructor said to basically push into the steering the way you want to turn- so push on the left handlebar to turn left, which does the same thing, but I didn't understand the physics or what was happening. I didn't know we actually wanted to turn the wheel slightly the other direction and I was using bodyweight as well. thanks for clearing up everything!!

Brilliant video - even better than a couple of other great videos on RU-vid, and that is saying something. What is really tough for me is that I have already learned this stuff subconsciously for years, and it scares me to start just pushing handlebars just to see what happens! Why bother then? is a good question. Answer is I now live in a region with very much more challenging and mountainous terrain, and it has given me a shock as to how much more skills I need to not overcook bends or come off on wet corners and gravelly roads - if I am ever to keep up with traffic that is. Going deeper has undermined my confidence at the moment - like I say I have done the easier bends for many years, or just gone very slow for the occasional one - but I think in the end practice and understanding what I am doing will make me a much better and safer rider. Shame I can't do rider courses, but if you can ride to one safely at traffic speed from where I live, by then you will pass with flying colours.

16:13 🤣 Awesome content! I've been binge watching your videos since I started the motorcycle license course here (2 weeks now) and it has really helped me loosen up on the bike and perform the required manoeuvres almost with ease. Thank you!

When I'm going really slow (under 5mph), I use my butt to initiate lean angle. But faster mph that's not possible to achieve desired angle so counter steer is needed. At slow speed, it's absolutely possible, but just doesn't seem necessary when the angle can be achieved through a small weight shift. I absolutely love your videos my friend! So thorough.

.... that's why countersteering is always a part of any good motorcycle course. My courses are also good by the way.... The way you narrate these videos are very interesting

Very good job explaining, thank you, not everyone can detail it as much as I've seen from your explanation.
