As you can see in this video I ran into a problem with some of my Alclad II paints from the last video and I wanted to show you what happened and how I solved it.
@@barbatosrex9473 can i use this to top coat my gunpla? i was planning on using the alcad 2 for the inner frame only and leaving the rest as just the bare plastic.
Your videos are some of the absolute BEST on youtube for airbrushing instructions! I just finished a custom painted kit and haven't tried the alclad 2 yet and was fearful of messing up the kit. This video has given me the confidence to test it and how to spray it without the sandpaper effect. Thank you so much. SUBBED!!!
A good video. I've always been wary about using Alclad chrome etc, due to it's alleged fragility, and inability to be clear coated. Certainly lots of people on modelling pages on the internet / social media say you can't clear coat Alclad chrome. But you've actually shown that you can! So that's something I'm going to try as well, especially since I'm not keen on the kit chrome on car kits, which looks too toy like.
I was curios about using this to coat chrome. And hesitant. Funny enough I was bloody shaking the aqua gloss right up to where you said not to. thank you for your video
Thank you for this. I’m getting ready to paint Mando and I’m trying to follow Sideshows metallic method, but they didn’t clarify which water-based clear coat they used. Now I know.
Hi. Thanks for your demo. Interestingly I had the same problem with the Airframe Aluminium coming off. I talked to the Alclad people at the show at Telford (UK) about it and they told me to do exactly the same thing and use the Aqua Gloss to seal it. It worked really well. one of the strange things they told me was to brush it on with a soft brush and that works really well too. I've also found it's an excellent gloss for use over ordinary paint too. Well worth it.
Thankx Rob,that sucks I tried to get in on the first batch, but it wouldn't ship to canada, ill order one tonight ,my wife gonna kill me gonna cost me $180 cad anyways keep ur videos coming love watching them every day I only watch them at night with 3 hrs sleep to go to work, ur killing me man😅take care God bless 🙏
just found your channel and the info is awesome! thank you for breaking your process down. just getting into airbrushing and I'm learning. in future videos would you include info like PSI you used? thank you.
Thanks for the kind words. I might have mentioned the PSI I use in my airbrush set up video. But I will in a future video. I just ordered a top of the line H&S Airbrush and I'll do a video on it this week.
Excellent video, hey a question, have you experienced placing masking tape on top of the Aqua Gloss layer? If you did, what was the result? Did it take off his brilliance or stay? Thank you!
Hi there, great channel. Subbed and watching every video. Currently building a RedstoneAtlas rocket that l will paint with Ak extreme metal metallic smoke or titanium. Since l will need to apply decals what clear would recommend to use? Could I use Alclad aqua clear? All the best from Melbourne Australia
Great informative video as always, have you tried using their regular Klear Kote Gloss vs this Aqua Gloss? I'm curious how the former performs on these chrome/high shine/metallic paints.
He clearly states in the video that the Klear Kote is what damaged the polished brass color, and that alclad recommends Aqua gloss for sealing all of the high shine metal colors.
Once I get the booth would you agree that I should be able to reach the desired flat and unblemished paint surface (skills aside) due to the correct overstay extraction and no airborne particles to mottle or spoil the wet surface. Regards Kev
Hey man I love your contant! I have a question I really would love your option. So I’m looking for a translucent paint to paint my canopy of my space marines aircraft. And I came ass alclad translucent green red blue. I was wondering would these work well on the plastic canopy?
Kev Lawlor from Australia. Hi Buddy, today I started to spray Alclad II Primer & Microfiller followed by Gloss Black Base. I completely screwed it up. I was building my own airbrush spray booth which went well as I am a builder however, I have not hooked up the extractor fan so I sprayed in an open door but out of the wind. The end result was mottled and spotty and crappy looking. I put this down, eventually. to the residual air-born paint residue drying in the booth and settling on the wet surface. Would you agree with this? I contacted Hobby Tools Australia and ordered the air booth you reviewed some time back with the LED lights around it. It has a great extraction system and was only $200.00.
I am new to airbrushing and I build model cars. I am really interested in using Alclad on my models. One question I have is when would you use the regular Klear vs the one in this video? Thanks Dan
I’ll be using the chrome on a mini in the next couple of weeks. Does it require a clear coat or is the paint sturdy enough on its own? It is a game piece so it will be handled.
It does cloud up a bit, and makes it look a bit more like metallic coated plastic, but i guess it's better than other options. I tested it out on more complex parts, and when comparing two identical ones, you can see the difference.
@@pixelpuppy You're not doing anything wrong. So far, any kind of clear coating will dull the metallic look. If you do that with real metal, it will still produce the same effect. What i do these days is after alclad metallics, i don't clear coat at all. I just leave it to fully cure for a few days. It's fairly resilient after. Whenever i work on a mech, i paint the metallic bits first, then let them cure and i avoid touching them while i work on the rest of the build. I also don't really use Alclad clear coats anymore these days. I prefer Mr.hobby ones. They cure better, and they are tougher, without becoming sticky, etc. Besides metallic paints, Alclad doesn't do great products. They are always hit or miss. I had a batch of black gloss primer, it was constantly clogging my airbrush, and was becoming clumpy. Not sure what was wrong with it, but i never had this issue with GaiaNotes or MrHobby, on any of their products. Pretty mediocre quality control i suspect.
How do you think the aqua gloss will hold up outside on a car? I 3d printed a replica dealer emblem for a truck my dad is restoring. I used the chrome then aqua gloss after epoxying it to get it smooth
Tell you what for Gundams and Cars you can't beat Alclad's simplicity to use and amazing end results. I grabbed up their whole line and will soon be setting up a channel of my own with results, builds etc. The metals work great on military models as well they even have a darkened jet exhaust color that really pops. A bit expensive but the bottles do go a long way.
Anyone have any tips to keep mine as smooth as this? So far I get a grainy look to it. Sometimes rough. I’m using an Iwata Hp cs with a 3.5 needle at 15-20 psi.
I bought the Aqua gloss, and when I tried to spray it the product was really thick, it did not spray at all and took forever to clean out of the air brush. Has anyone else experienced this? Looks like the bottle you have their is not thick like mine.
After I spray the Polished Brass or the Chrome, should I wait a day before I should buff it? Should I buff the Polished Brass and Chrome before I apply the Aqua Gloss or after?
I'd wait at least a day minimum. But when buffing I would go super lightly. I gently rubbed mine with a super soft cloth. Then apply the Aqua Gloss. The Aqua is very durable so after it dries you will be good to buf it too if needed but the Aqua applied right shouldn't need buffing.
Question, I am looking for a laquer based gloss coat to apply before panel lining so that the ennamel thinner do not melt my acrilic paint job, which product would you recommend?
Hey bud ,I'm about to purchase ur swallowtail brush but I was wondering about the stand if they are coming back with ur name on it instead of gaahleri.let me know thankx Robert
Thank you for the info Rex, yet my results came out saying otherwise.. My Alclad chrome was shiny, after a medium coating of Aqua Gloss it became much less shiny, almost turned to matt. I followed strictly the instructions as what it says on the bottle. Aqua Gloss is NOT recommended from my opinion if you've ALREADY got an satisfying result from the chrome coating. It is protective but will NOT improve the shiny effect FYI.
I've don't it both over the paint and over the clear. Both come out equally the same for me. Some will tell you over clear but others will agree with me. I've seen some trophy winning builds where they put the decals right on the paint.
@@barbatosrex9473 putting the decals on the paint first makes more sense to me too. Thank you a lot for your quick response! Awesome videos too! I ordered almost all of alclads metal products due to your reviews. Keep it up!
i have a question after using Alclad chrome and alclad aqua gloss it started to habe a crackling effect any tips on how to avoid that? thank you in advancea and love your channel
@@barbatosrex9473 Thank you sir! Now I gotta figure out how to get the crust from Vallejo polyurethane clear coat off my airbrush needle. Got any tips? I've used Tamiya airbrush cleaner and Alclad airbrush cleaner with no luck.
In trying to chrome a clastic satin finish vehicle emblem. I used a spray chrome spray paint product from an auto parts store that looked ok over the black gloss primer, but after drying for about 24 hours Iwas able to scrape of the chrome paint and primer with my fingernail! I the alclad for durable?
can you apply this stuff with a hand brush or q-tip? I know it says to not apply in heavy coats, but I’m wondering if I can apply with a hand brush/q-tip conservatively.
Where did you get the polished brass paint? I live in the United States and I can’t find any sites that ship outside of Europe. I’ve seen it’s discontinued on almost all of the online US stores, but that’s not the case for the UK… If anyone knows what’s up, please let me know!
It's been discontinued by the company. They've been having trouble with that color, tons of complaints so they canceled it but I think they're working on a replacement
I have tested both 310 Clear Kote and Aqua Gloss and they both work. Just don't use the 310 on chrome, only Aqua Gloss works on chrome. But for candy you can use either. I actually just tested It for you
That's odd, I've had good luck with their Klear Kote. Aqua Gloss works great. It's water based, not solvent based. It's basicly floor wax. You can also use Pledge Liquid Floor Gloss, it's sold at Walmart. I use that too. It dries to a nice shine. I might shoot a video with it.
@@barbatosrex9473 thank u for the reply! how long do you usually wait for klear kote to dry? did u use thinner for klear kote? and also when its water based does it wash off by water and soap or does it become water resistant when dried?
@@stevennope5139 no it doesn't wash off with water. There are 3 types of paint. Acrylic based, oil based and solvent based. They use different ways of adhesion to the plastic. Acrylics use a water base, Enamels are oil based and Lacquers are solvent based. They all perform different and it's up to the Hobbyist to choose what's best for them. Acrylics are popular for people in closed areas like apartments cause there's no smell or chemicals involved but they don't perform nearly as well as lacquers. Lacquer is my favorite as they perform just about perfect every time I use them. Acrylics require a little more patience to go on right.
@@ToyMaestro when Buffing the chrome only use a soft cloth. I use my t shirt. I personally don't polish my Aqua Gloss as I think it needs it. Put it on your piece first and you might like the way it looks before shinning it.
@@barbatosrex9473 THANK YOU !! btw i found a place that is selling Alclad Polished Brass that is sold out everywhere but they are in Ireland and im in california i just placed an order.
They don't unfortunately but I'm searching for one right now to test. The closest I got is Krylon Foil Gold in a spray can. Look up my test for that on my channel. It's pretty nice
@@barbatosrex9473 thank you, i even checked for alclad polished brass and cant find it on ebay or amazon. im gonna check ALCLADS website. thank you and your channel is AWESOME !!!
@@barbatosrex9473 If I don't have Acrylic base cleaner, do you think I can clean this Aqua gross with Mr. Hobby's Mr. Cleaner? I specifically means how to clean this Aqua Gross as I always feel the airbrush is not clean enough, I clean the airbrush with ultrasonic cleaner after every session. Or how did u clean it and 100% sure it's clean cuz it's kind of transparent in the airbrush. Hope to advise.
@@calvin14888 I would use rubbing alcohol or window cleaner after Aqua Gloss. And you must clean it right away after spraying it as Aqua Gloss dries very fast after spraying it. I flush it with very hot water too. Mr Hobby lacquer thinners won't have much effect on Aqua Gloss as it's pretty much a water based floor wax
@@calvin14888 either one, go hot water first. Very hot water from the faucet. Just before I start airbrushing I get super hot water from the sink and put it on my bench. Then when clean be sure blow air for about 20 seconds to dry it up
@@garylai9248 I'd go with a 15 psi but I feel the needle is too small. Don't ever shake it too. Spray close, 2 wet coats are good but not so wet that it runs. But I feel the needle is too small for clear coats. I use a 4mm needle or larger when I spray clear coats
@@barbatosrex9473 thx Rex! follow your instruction to airbrush again! It works! 🙏 thanks!! Another issue! Just buy the Alclad black chrome to use it! But I tried to airbrush setting same as the chrome one! The result like matte gun metal! Needle is 0.2, 12 psi! Is there need any other setting? Thanks again
Barbatos Rex where do you find them that cheap?!?!?!! I found each of the gloss and flat bottles for $13-15.. the first ever kit I painted was a candy colored hyaku shiki with their regular chrome, and I am LOVING the Alclad chrome.
The ones labeled HIGH SHINE are not lacquers. They are alcohol based. That's why the rub off easily. That's also how they earned the nickname failclad. Also, I quit using the clear coats. The flat kept chipping off and taking paint with it. The gloss never seems to dry completely and can remain tacky for a month.
