we are moving and quote from movers are bit expensive so we decided to pack everything and asked the mover to transfer only our stuff to our new place ...this help very much with the cost ....your video help us so much in packing our stuff...thank you so much 🙏

For leather couches and sofas we use blue moving blankets first, and then we wrap them with plastic wrap. The couch in the video gets wrapped in blue moving pads once it is loaded into the truck. We'll be doing more videos about that soon!

Hey Dana! That's a great question! The length furniture can be stored in plastic depends on several factors. The material your furniture is made out of and the location you intend to store it all play into how long something can be stored in plastic. The couch we wrapped in the video can be stores for many years. However, we recommend re-wrapping every few years to give the couch time to air out.

What do you recommend for wrapping and protecting sofas and chairs for storage into a rented storage unit for long term storage? I have fabric and leather furniture that I want to store for a year and am concerned about any potential damage from the possibility of moisture or bugs in the event of anything from adjoining units comes in. Is it okay to leave sofas in this type of plastic for a long-term storage situation or is there something better for that?

That's a really good question. It all depends on the region you live and whether or not you have a climate-controlled storage facility. If you live in a humid area and you have a non-climate controlled/outdoor storage facility moisture will probably be an issue no matter what you do. Leaving the bottom uncovered allows the sofa to breathe. We also recommend using moving pads when in storage or loading into a truck. Wrapping a sofa with plastic wrap only protects it from becoming dirty during the move or wet if it is raining during the move.

With a bigger/heavier sofa, do you remove the cushions and then wrap the sofa as you demonstrate? Thanks! Very informative!

No, you can leave the cushions on. We only take them off of the cushions are extra large and hang over the back of the sofa. Removing them makes it easier to carry and navigate difficult turns. It's a situation based decision.

The thickness of the plastic wrap will directly affect the protection of your furniture. If you have a thicker plastic wrap, it will be less likely to rip as you move the furniture and your furniture will stay safer. Thinker plastic wrap rips very easily and has a much weaker hold. Does this cause an issue w humidity??? When we moved in TX they had some sort of paper that wrapped all the furniture. Curious if pros/cons to each

That is a great question, and it depends upon a few factors. First, how long is your couch going to be wrapped, and second what is the humidity/weather like in your part of the country? The paper method is usually done for overseas moves, military moves, or storage moves. The paper is typically held on by plastic wrap, but the bottom is not wrapped to allow for air flow. The method shown in the video is for short haul or local moving, and is done to keep the couch clean while moving. The couch is padded once it is loaded into the truck.

We recommend pad wrapping leather sofas first. Then wrap the sofa with plastic wrap just like this video shows. You will want to leave an opening in the bottom so that air can circulate. That hole in the plastic wrap will prevent the leather from sweating.

Is there any biodegradable stretch wrap? I don't want to put all that plastic in a landfill.

Hello Carolyn, Thank you for this great question. At this time we are unaware of any biodegradable plastic wrap. However, there are other techniques that do not require plastic wrap. First, a sofa cover designed specifically for moving is a good but expensive option. The second option is using moving blankets. Both options have drawbacks directly related to how difficult moving pads are to keep on the sofa without plastic wrap. Your question has inspired us to film videos on those additional options. What's your take on stretch wrap vs fabric pads vs paper pads for storage or long hauls? I know that stretch wrap can trap moisture and cause mildew issues. Is this always a problem, or does covering the piece with fabric or paper pads first absorb enough moisture to mitigate that risk?

All techniques have a time and a place. For local moves, short hauls, and long hauls we will stretch wrap fabric couches. Once inside the truck we will pad them to protect from damage. For leather couches, we will wrap them with paper pads first and then stretch wrap them. We leave an opening in the bottom to help air circulate and reduce moisture issues. If you live and work in a humid area, techniques may differ. We are fortunate enough that humidity does not factor into how we protect couches and sofas.

@@StumpfMovingandStorage Sounds like I may need to consult a chemist, lol. I run mostly in the southeast so I may have to take extra precautions depending on location and time of year. Thanks for your reply! I've seen that Joyce Van Lines also does the method of paper pads, then stretch. Atlas policy is pads then stretch for leather, stretch then pads for fabric. My first day of moving the shipper was going into a mini storage, and the veteran mover training me asked the shipper if it was climate controlled or not. His suggestion if it wasn't was going to be to poke holes in the stretch wrap before storing, but I'm kind of skeptical to this day. Seems like it might just make moisture get in easier to begin with. Never had a claim come back to haunt me regarding O/S wrapping, btw, but I like overthinking things before they happen.

O/S furniture, rugs, and mattresses make for some of the most nail-biting decisions, imo. Glass and TVs might be fragile, but at least it's pretty obvious and universal what to do with them.

This is such an intricate craft yet unlike plumbing, electrical, medical, legal, etc work there is no official certification to separate amateurs and hacks from pros; you just know it when you see it. Very little media, literature, or even online content on moving, too. Ever read "The Long Haul" by Finn Murphy? It's an excellent exception. I'd love to see some videos beyond tutorials too, just showcasing mover skills and technique.

Hello! If you are in need of moving services please feel free to contact our office at 412-241-2101. As for pad wrapping your couch, that can be done before or after it is wrapped in plastic wrap. Anything loaded into a moving van should be pad wrapped to avoid damage.

That's a hard question. It all depends upon the region you live, and the location the couch is stored. If you are in a humid area, the couch will need to breathe. Leaving an open bottom will allow for the couch to breathe while in storage. However, this has drawbacks. If you have an outdoor storage facility, the opening may allow bugs or rodents to make their way into the couch. Long answer short, it depends on many factors. I wouldn't be able to give you an answer without knowing more about your physical and geographic storage location.

You failed to note that is done for warehouse storage only. The shrink wrap gives no protection for transport. Recommended for transport is 6 mil plastic wrap . Personally I use 6 mil covers specially designed for upholstery

Thanks for watching our video Frank. Plastic wrap/shrink wrap does offer protection for upholstery. This technique protects the upholstery from getting dirty or stained during the move. It also keeps the movers sweat off of the upholstery as they lift and carry the furniture. This is the exact same reason plastic wrap/shrink wrap is used to cover upholstery brought into storage. Once the plastic/shrink wrapped furniture is brought to the truck, it is again wrapped in moving pads. Large rubber bands are used to hold the moving pads onto the furniture as it's loaded into the truck. That step was not a part of this particular video, because we are in the process of filming an additional series of videos covering how to properly load a moving truck. Thanks again for watching!

This technique is to keep dirt, sweat, and moisture off of the sofa when moving. It still needs to be wrapped with moving pads when placed in the truck. Moving trucks are in closed, so I would not recommend doing this with an open car trailer. We produced the video linked below 👇 that shows how to pad wrap and stretch wrap sofa.
