How To Protect Your Bike From Rust And Still Ride Over The Winter Months

It is very tempting and arguably sensible to put your pride and joy to a comfortable, safe bed over the winter months and bring him/her out again in the Spring, looking pristine, to enjoy for the six or seven 'rideable' months of the year... and nothing wrong with that!
However, stubborn swines like me who don't want the fun to stop for almost half the year, need to adapt to the conditions and take steps to ensure that our bikes and ourselves are protected and up for the job. For me this means adapting my riding to the conditions, wearing appropriate gear etc... For the bikes it means correct tyres and pressures etc. and, to ensure that they look as good in the Spring as the ones that have been tucked away, it means rust protection and a solid washing, drying and maintenance plan.
And the best way that I have found of doing that is to wash and dry my bikes thoroughly and to treat them at the start of every Winter with ACF 50. This video shows how I go about doing that.
Here are links to ACF 50 and the bike/pet dryer that I use:
Pet dryer: amzn.to/3dLHx6I
ACF 50 4ltr: amzn.to/3dGFLDX
ACF 50 Rattle Can: amzn.to/3ERGYUH

Just a tip when cleaning your chain, always turn the wheel so that where you are wiping, the chain ifs travelling away from the rear sprocket. Even just turning the rear wheel by hand, if your hand gets dragged in between chain and sprocket you are going to hurt yourself!

I've been using ACF50 for a few years and it's amazing stuff. But the best £57 I ever spent was on the pet dryer which gets all the moisture of and just for good measure I run the bike upto temperature on the side stand. DON'T waster your money on a bike dryer as if you look closely it the same unit but without out biker dryer on it 🤣🤣

You should also mention that ACF-50 is quite thick and does need warming up. The best way is to immerse the spraying container in a vessel of fairly warm water for about 20 minutes to make the ACF-50 more runny and sprayable

I have been using a leaf blower as a dryer and ACS50, but that is a LOT of product on the bike. I had no idea you could use it on bodywork and the windscreen. I have been just using it on the metal bits. I only used it on the engine case, suspension, and chain. Thanks for the video!

Great vid and advice, looks like you were under a bit of time pressure though to get the spraying done on the day and left part of your rear wheel exposed to the blow off from the gun. The sheets are great for this but just to double up a little tip would be to wrap the tyres in cling film so as to avoid any over spray or vapour settlement getting on them 👍🏻

Lucky for us, here in Australia we don't have to worry about salty roads and general dank weather you guys experience there. Every vehicle that features on youtube that's in the UK has rust and corrosion issues. Over here, the worst it gets is if you nearly on the coastal fringe and beachside suburbs. That's it. I purchased a motorcycle from a guy who lived in a beachside area and there was significant amounts of corrosion and degradation. Wish he knew of ACF-50. I have spent the last 12 months sourcing NOS bits to replace any compromised pieces and am confident that I'll bring it back to mint condition. I have placed an order for some ACF-50 and hope to start using it from here on in.

I used to commute through the winter and used to paint ACF50 on to unpainted metal, chromed bits and bolt heads etc with a stiff brush. Also sprayed it inside my frame tubes. I did used to find that road grime seemed to stick to it a bit though - but rather have that than corrosion. Never liked the smell of the stuff though - but it looks like you do!

I used ACF with the squirty bottle year one, used a compressor year two onwards... compressor was like using a cheat mode in a game, ridiculously easy! I did use about 10% of what you used though! 😅😅 I did bag up the hand controls too as I didn't want those to become slippy! I ride my bikes every week of the year and they're rust free. Just don't wash them through the salty months. Lightly rinse the crap off and the ACF stays put.

I don't use ACF50 even though I have it. I thoroughly clean the bike after each winter ride, then dry. Yep, with a pet drier, which I bought second hand for £25. The bike gets waxed once dry and the shiny bits get wiped down with an oily rag. The bike is a Royal Enfield Classic 500 and it has zero signs of rust. I took it through a really badly flooded road last week. A car following me didn't make it. Mind you, the bike started spluttering as the air filter got a bit wet and muddy. Good fun all the same.

Have just watched a video on here by Stuart Fillingham and he is testing out a new product aimed at motorcycle protection......Jenolite wax oil spray in aerosol form, has a strong anti corrosion additive and when applied forms a thin coating, so not messy. the big thing is it reckons to last much much longer than ACF50 because a few wash downs and it's protection has about gone where as this does not wash off so easily with soapy water or indeed spray of your wheels from the road. Motorcycles have been my only form of transport throughout my life and in the winter months my chosen ride is my Suzuki GS850 and Squire sidecar so am going to try this new product.

I think I would have been better off just not bothering at least I would not have the pitting all over the fainted surfaces. I think if you only put it on places where you have bare metal it would work great, but that's not much on a motorcycle.

The ACF 50 was designed for use in internal areas on things like airframes ,not exposed external areas . The stuff appears to work as the bikers that use it are fussy & clean their lube their bikes regular anyway . The ACF 50 like fancy chain lube is hyped up to bikers to extract their money . All ACF 50 does is put a gritty oily slime on your motorcycle ,that gets washed off in a short time ,if you ride a motorcycle as it’s meant to be,day in day out in all weathers . The only part of a motorcycle ACF 50 can effectively protect is parts that are not directly exposed to outside elements . Also chain rollers are lubed & sealed internally ,the chain lube is only for hiding the rust ,as any external oil gets squished out when rollers meet sprocket teeth . No point in fancy chain lubes as brushed on gear lube is more effective & cheaper . Hosing off salt in winter & the odd spray of WD40 or similar & a general wipe over with an oily rag until the big spring clean & wax polish & general lube & grease is the way to go . Any rust on frames & stands can be sorted with a tin of Hammerite paint.

how does it hold up to heated parts? Such as the exhaust and engine, I've had issues with rust on exhausts and got some XCP after tons of research but worried how heat affects it. ACF I believe (maybe was XCP) says stains might be visible after heat exposure

I've never had stains, but it does burn off of the exhaust headers fairly fast, seems to last on the engine fine, just doesn't like the raw heat of the exhaust pipes. Rusty headers are a pet hate of mine so I tend to re-apply to them fairly regularly.

I’ve put the stuff on every bike, road bike and motocross bike I’ve owned several times a year pretty much how you have just applied it. Never ever had any corrosion on any bike even after winter use. For best results you need a spray gun even if it’s an eBay special as it will mist the bike getting into every nook and cranny. Anyone who says it doesn’t work isn’t applying it with a spray gun and isn’t applying enough of it. A large container like that would literally last years as less than a cup full will mist the bike a few times. It also makes replacing anything on the bike a breeze as all of the fixings are corrosion free.

That bike (pet😂) dryer looks exactly like the one I bought for £50👍 I had "proper" bike dryer lined up for £95 which looked very similar but they're both just hot/cold air blowers, right? I use a product called Corrosion Block, also made by Lear Chemicals who make ACF50. It's maybe slightly more viscous, still sprayable and is made for the saltwater marine industry. I give all my bikes the treatment from new and maintain it. Why is the plating on nuts, bolts and fasteners so CRAP on just about every make of bike you care to mention? You leave the showroom on your nice, shiny new model and a couple of weeks of unprotected, wet weather riding can have it looking very second hand indeed. As you say, no need to stop riding in Winter if you're prepared to take some preventative measures and keep on top of cleaning.👍 I've just bought some XCP rust blocker spray to try so I'll see how that compares

That one-gallon ACF50 you have there cost around $120 now - October 2022, can cover 1,000 bikes and last 10 years, why so much for a bike?

Is there such a thing as a bag to cover the brake calipers? Sort of like a small shower cap.

Not that I've seen, it would be a good idea though!

a comment for an older vid I know, but with your spray gun, reduce the air pressure and the fluid output, will save so much wasted overspray. :) Nice bike though.. :)

Ahhhh reminded me of my little brother and his deodorant, one can lasted about a week until he sparked a cigarette up on the way to primary school and imitated an Olympic torch, lol

I'm suspicious of ACF50, as it's characteristics appear the same as old type wet chain lube, same sticky thin film consistency and smell. I reckon someone realised it makes a good rust inhibitor, got some aviation engineers using it so they can claim it's "used in the aviation industry" and we have what we have, over priced chain lube resold as rust inhibitor.

Ha, ha, you could be right, but it does seem to work.

Don’t ride bikes the misses won’t let me get a license 😕.came across acf50 and bought a rattle can this stuff is amazing sprayed my entire underside of my car with it and it’s still going strong after 2 yr even use it on bathroom stuff that says it stainless steal🧐 but I’m thinking of getting the stuff you had and using a spray gun to get it everywhere under the car

OK right, but you guys with a garage have that luxury of rinsing the bike and drying, but if you don't have that garage and you get home and it's still pissing it down, you either leave the bike in the rain or try covering it, which is not ideal for sure but a lot of us don't have a lot of choice 🤷🏻‍♂️

I second the xcp comment for sure. I equally haven't got the luxury of power, storage and water access. I use a 6L pump pressure cannister which is used to spray chemicals or water plants. And just spray acf into a rag and paintbrush. Less mess. Much more energy efficient and less water consumption. Using a bike cover helps to which I've treated with fabsil gold.

I would wipe those tyres down with prepsol or a wax and grease remover to get any ACF50 off the tyres, use a filtered respirator when using a spray gun, that shit will not be good for your lungs.

ACF 50 is not to be used on Motorcycles as different grade metals used on them than on aviation and maritime. And ACF50 on non marine grade metals actually speeds up corrosion Ask the US Navy and US Air Force maintenance guys at AMARG (Boneyard in the Arizona). Also bennetts have done a thorough test. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wBgF07I7TQM.html
