Peter Chan's guide to pruning a Chinese elm bonsai tree.
The Chinese Elm is one of the most common species sold as Indoor bonsai, although they can also be grown as Outdoor bonsai. In fact they grow better as Outdoor bonsai.
If grown indoors, they like to kept in a cool room and should be kept on a window sill where it will get lots of light. It is quite common with Chinese elms to lose some leaves when they are moved to a new location. The leaves will turn yellow and fall but new leaves will soon grow .
They prefer a cool room like most indoor bonsai and the soil should be kept moist at all times. Water generously whenever you water the tree, as insufficient water is one of the most common causes of failure. Spraying the soil with a handspray is NOT enough. Use a water bottle or hose pipe to drench the tree when you water. If the tree sheds its leaves, it could be due to insufficient light or lack of water.
Sometimes they can get an infestation of White fly or Red spider mite. If you see these pests, use any insecticide to get rid of them. You can also try jetting them off with a hose pipe.
If you have problem growing it Indoors - keep the tree outdoors and it will thrive.
Some of our customers have grown this species very successfully for over twenty years!
The Elm can stand a wide temperature range from minus 10C to the mid 30s as in their native habitat in China. So it is a very hardy species.
