Watch as David Austin Roses explain how to prune an established shrub rose.
Pruning is essential if you really want your rose to thrive. English Roses are naturally vigorous and, if left without pruning, may become large and leggy shrubs.
The main purpose of pruning is to create a shapely, attractive shrub, with good structure, you can do this by simply removing parts of the plant during the non-flowering season. Pruning encourages fresh new growth and plentiful blooms for the following season.

I aim to prune my climbers late winter/ early spring- just as I start to see the leaf nodes swell and this is in zone 7b- Maryland. I start late winter and pace myself up until early spring. For shrub and carpet roses I hard prune in late fall.

easy instructions!! you say 2 to 4 inches to the main cain however on the DA website it says 6inches from the main cain, does it really matter?

Hi, I see some crossing/overlapping of main canes, is this ok to do. I thought canes were not supposed to cross. Not a criticism by the way, just want to be sure before I do. Thank you....Tina (Ireland)

When should we prune? I see you remove the foliage so I assume you do this in the winter?

Good afternoon Hoang, in the UK we recommend pruning your rose in January/February when the rose is dormant. Many of our roses naturally drop their leaves in the winter when they go into dormancy.

I have a climber that put out long shoots with flowers at the end only . I don’t have horizontal space to pull the shoots , only vertical on a tall trellis so what can I do to produce more flowers all over ? Thanks
@AJsGreenThumbLLC
@AJsGreenThumbLLC 7 месяцев назад
The climber needs to bend as horizontal as possible to produce LATERAL branches. The flowers are formed on these laterals.
