I find this type of hydrangea pretty low maintenance (but not as much as the panicle types, like limelight or quickfire). They look sad when they have no leaves on them but, if left pretty much alone, they can really be really beautiful. In this case, these were a little neglected so they needed some rehabilitation. Don’t be afraid to do this but also don’t take off too much because you will be reducing the blooms you get, similar to the macrophylla/big leaf types.
If you’re confused and need a little more information on this to help you keep all of the different types straight, download my free guide (or more extensive one) on pruning hydrangeas: linktr.ee/youcandoitgardening
My goal is to empower as many people as possible to get out there and get their hands dirty. I’m in zone 6 in the Boston area but almost all of the principles I talk about are applicable to any garden.
