Hydrangea pruning: Don't sweat it!

How to prune panicle and smooth hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata and Hydrangea arborescens). The big thing is to not sweat it! You won't kill your hydrangea if you make a mistake. But note, this is only for hydrangeas that bloom on NEW wood, meaning the growth they put out this year. Don't prune Hydrangea macrophylla this way (in fact, don't prune Hydrangea macrophylla, aka bigleaf hydrangea, at all in spring) or you'll lose your flowers for this year.

Thanks for the tips! We bought a house last spring and the previous owner had planted several Hydrangeas around the property. I had no idea what to do with them. I am glad I just let the blooms die and I didn't do anything. Now its Valentine's Day and I know that end of next month I can probably look at pruning them once they get some swollen buds.

Hi, looking for info on how to prune my hydrangeas, I found you, and I am so glad I did!!! This was a great video, full of informative information! One thing I would like to mention, my sister-in-law found out the hard way, that it is a good idea to wear safety glasses when pruning shrubs like hydrangeas. Luckily, she did not lose her eye or her eyesight in that eye, but she did have a significant injury. Just saying! Thank you so much for sharing, I have subscribed, and will go back and watch your videos that I have missed, and will look forward to future additions!

Excellent video! I grow all varieties in my garden on Cape Cod. Your advice is spot on-- don't worry, go for it and be amazed each summer that what looks so scalped in March is shockingly prolific by July and August. I notice you didn't cover macrophyllas, probably owing to your zone 5 climate. I couldn't grow them in Syracuse, zone 5, either. Cape Cod is a 7. Keep up the good work. I especially loved your approach to clean up. I'm the same. Phase 1 is prune the plant. Phase 2 is take the branches to the dump--whenever I get around to it. Here's to a great 2019 in the yard.
@TheImpatientGardener
@TheImpatientGardener 5 лет назад
Thank you! I have a few macrophyllas around but most of them are not long for this world (at least in my yard). It’s just such a hard place for them to be bud hardy and why bother with that when there are so many reliable bloomers? I’m a terribly inefficient gardener, but I can only concentrate on one job at a time so I end up making a mess and then cleaning up a mess. Good to know I’m not alone.

@@LindaLuxable That depends on what type of hydrangea it is. Is it a hydrangea that only blooms on old wood or on new as well? I do cut just the blooms off of my hydrangea that blooms only on old wood, but nothing further below. I will prune back my Paniculata hydrangeas next month, November.
