Thank you Julie, You answered all of my questions. I have a 5" tall specimen in my garden, thriving but yes, I do want to propogate. In Hawaii most of us don't know that much about begonias but your video basically shared everything I needed to know. I am going to have poka-dots all over my gardens. One thing I have found out in all my years of growing plants and I'm 70 years old now is that the closer than nodes are the better the chance of getting something to root. That first cutting you took is from a newer shoot and sometimes I found that they tend to want to rot rather than root sometimes. So sometimes it's better to take a cutting where the notes for the leaf scars are closer together. Also I found that a more successful taking cuttings during a full moon right before during or right after. It also works when planting seeds. And when is the highest tide at the ocean during the full Moon the Moon does have a pull on water on Earth. So I guess that's why it works there's some things like in patients that I take cuttings from and if it's during a full moon they usually don't wilt if it's not a full moon I need to put a plastic bag over them to help the humidity level so they don't Wilt and die.

@mleonard3163
@mleonard3163 Год назад
In case you never found any answer to your question, if your begonia has multiple stems then try cutting a single branch down to the height you want it. Root the cutting and then see if the old branch sprouts new leaves below the cut line. My begonia only had a single stem but has leaves the full 24 inches. Then again it's also been living outside almost year-round. It sits on my deck in full sun a good portion of the day in summer in California. Southern exposure with light and great reflected off the house. There are trees but they don't shade it much. It only comes inside for freezing temps at night or snow. It has been outside for as low as 33 degrees.

Based on my experience you don't need to do all of the extra work, I just cut mine on top of the node and put it in a water and that's it. I have mine in a vase, some are in a fish bowl with just water in it, been there for a year or so, along with photos plant. I just change the water from time to time sometimes every 2 weeks or longer. I placed it on an island counter top where there's no window and they are still thriving, the photos that I put in the same vase keeps growing longer with new leaves. I'm in Washington zone 8b.

You should try! Most commercial garden centers propagate using the bag method with all types of begonias. I'm not sure how you would create humidity without misting. I guess you could mist towards the base of the plant instead and try to avoid hitting the leaves

You can actually propagate from just one leaf with the stem cut off (and rooting hormone!) but success rate is lower than the method shown in this video. I’ve have 100% success with this method, but using only one leaf is like 50/50.
@Super7317

You can definitely propagate with even just the leaf! Plant it directly in the soil. If you also have a bit of stem , you can either propagate in water or also burry it in soil , keep it nice and humid.

This is an old question but let me just answer it anyway to anyone reading it. I chopped my very long leggy polka dot back to the first two leaves to start over fresh and cut the cutting up into single/double leaf stems too and put them all in a vase under bright indirect light. They rooted super easily (no hormone no plastic bag) and I potted them next to the formerly leggy mother plant. I now have a super nice bushy pot of polka dots. All of them took to the soil and all of them have new leaves coming out.

Hello I have a Hoya question! So I just got my first ever hoya! It is Hoya Bella. But apparently all the info says to keep its soil moist all the time. Should I? Or should I let it fully dry out between waterings?

Hello! So I personally have not grown hoya Bella, hopefully some day! Doug from Vermont hoyas has a blog about this plant: vermonthoyas.com/hoya-species/hoya-bella/ This is the info he recommends: I have found since writing the original entry that Hoya bella is an extremely easy plant to keep if you never let it dry out. Use a self watering pot, and keep it topped off. To see how spectacular Hoya bella can look check out my new video tour of the plant below: Hope this helps! :)

Hi, I received my plant from my brother. He let it get tall and leggy. How do I get it to grow "bushy" instead? There are two branches and most of the leaves are on ends of branches. Thank you for any and all help.

Is there an ideal time for success when it comes to propagating or does the season not matter?

I don't really think it makes a difference to be honest

Would this work in case i cut above one leaf??i mean with no steem??
@julienicole92
@julienicole92 6 лет назад
So just propagating with a leaf cutting? I think it does work, but I personally have not tried. I have seen people cut the whole leaf in half, root the cut area and pot that in soil. Not sure if that works for angel wing begonias though, I think they did that with a rex begonia
@julienicole92
@julienicole92 6 лет назад
I meant they apply rooting hormone to the cut area**
