In this video I will be showing you how to prune apple trees during the summer. Summer pruning on apple trees are essential and the methods used in this video are transferable to other fruit trees. By doing a summer prune on you are encouraging fruit bud development for next year, retaining the trees shape, allowing light and air flow to the apples you have this year to allow them to ripen better and reduce the risk of diseased fruit, removing this years leafy growth so more of the trees energy and nutrients are directed to improving this years fruit size and taste, and by doing the pruning in the summer the cuttings from the apple tree are thinner easier to compost and reduces the need for a winter prune. All round a must for anyone who wants to make the most out of their apple tree and get the best results.
Your apple tree may need a winter prune if it is very overgrown find out how to in this video.

I am in Western NY, near niagara Falls area. Apples are king in this area, however I had none in my yard. Always loved the blossoms. I now have several crabapple I harvested wild from fields near the shop I worked at. They blossom beautifully and I had a couple spots in the yard in mind for them. I harvested them in late summer at about 7 feet tall. October. I had to cut some of the Tap Root I was nervous about doing. I dug nice size holes for them and a trench for the Tap root the direction it was naturally growing. I watered them often, keeping them wet the rest of the season. I was told they would not make it. I was told they would not blossom the first spring. I watched them defy those sentiments. Life needs a few things, food, water, and care. I am committed to offering them these needs and they respond absolutely well. I am new(ish) to pruning so your guide is very helpful. It is Jan 31 2024 and out I go for my winter pruning. I did watch your winter pruning video. I have also planted, now three years, Mcintosh and Jonathan 3' approx. 95 cm. each. Bought them cheap end of season.. TALK TO STORE MANAGERS!! It pays. So, winter was close I wanted to protect them from rabbits that will eat the fresh bark. I caged around the young trees about a few feet high thinking good enough. Winter came and dumped feet of snow. The rabbits walked on top of the snow a 'girdled' the young trees. They ate all the way around them and quite a bit up. I was told they will die, pull them. Again Life is relentless. I left them until a new shoot grew below the damage. I now have trees back to the original height. It took a few seasons but, again, it takes a lot to kill them completely. Thank you for your time in presenting a very straight forward look at this art of pruning, and shaping.

Really appreciate this video! We moved into a new house a few months back and it has an apple tree. I'd never heard of summer pruning until my dad told me that the apple tree would need it. I tried to read instructions but it's hard to understand without seeing someone do it. Thankfully I found your video. Massive help.

Hey Mary your most welcome. Yes pruning apple trees has always been associated with being a winter job but you can also prune in the summer and that really boosts the apple crop well done for your Dad recommending it. Really glad this helped you that's why I made this channel, thanks for your feedback means a lot. 👍 Hope your pruning goes well 😁

Yes I certainly will do a video on it when I give it a winter prune. At the moment I am keeping it under control and productive with a summer prune every year. It will need a thin out and a reduction prune in the winter at some point so will do a video on it then. 😁👍

This is really clear and informative. So many videos show pruning a trained small tree. I've got a large mature tree (60+ years), this video is just what I needed to tell me how to prune it. Thanks!

Hey Cornelia thanks so much for you comment. I can't recommend this pruning technique enough as in a garden it keeps the apple tree shaped yet very fruit productive 😁👍

Thanks good instruction. Our old Granny Smith tree, I pruned it earlier in June and now they have regrown twice as long. Crazy growth. It also flowered and fruited much earlier than last year. So I should now wait a couple more weeks and go for it. Northern California. I definitely need one of the long handled pruner.

Hey GDR thanks for your comment glad you found this helpful. Sounds like if you are able to next year wait until pruning it a bit later when the tips have hardened then it won't put on a second flush of growth so you only need to prune it once 👍 the long handle pruners are fantastic 😁👍

Hey Sean thanks for the comment much appreciated. It's a really lovely tree I have been pruning for about 7 years now when I first pruned it, it was hugely overgrown with a lot of long bowing branches and very congested. After that very hard winter prune I continued with a yearly summer prune to re build up the fruiting buds (creating spur networks) and I did do one winter prune on it a couple years ago to thin some the spurs out but other than that it's the yearly summer prune. I wanted to keep it neat and well shaped as possible as the path and grass are there but still wanted a really productive apple tree. 😁👍

Hey Adam, I've just recently started watching your videos, which are very informative and educational! It would be useful if you could state what tools you use (ie. brand & model) in the video description - I would be very interested to know what long reach pruner you were using here, and also the stepladder, as I would like to get these for myself 😊

Like the ladder! Do you burn these cuttings or can they be composted?
@gardenerstale
@gardenerstale 4 месяца назад
Hey Simon, with these cuttings they can be composed straight away as are usually sappy and immature so break down quicker but if you have a small shredder to hand that will speed things up. Alternatively goats love to eat them if you know of anyone with them 😁👍

@gardenerstale

Hey Ellie thanks for taking the time to watch both videos it will really pay off when you prune your apple tree. It's a lovely tree which is now very productive after doing some heavy winter prunes to start with then following up now every year with just summer prunes. I am not sure of the age at a guess I imagine 60 years old 👍
