This week we are looking at how to prune a Forsythia. How many branches to remove to keep it decongested and maintain the desired shape. Correct pruning will ensure that your Forsythia remains young and vigorous and will produce strong flowers all along the stems and branches. Also I discuss when to resort to drastic tactics, cutting the shrub right down to 6 inches to start again from scratch. This can happen when you buy a house with an out of control Forsythia or simply because your own shrub has been let get out of control.
Forsythias need to be tall and free. For me they are not apt for hedges or anything that is going to try and control their beautiful natural shape. There are many other alternatives that admit heavy pruning and can be used as hedging. Likewise your Forsythia shrub is going to need a place to grow tall (about 10ft tall) so if you don't have that available - again - choose a different plant - there are tons to choose from that don't at all mind having their height controlled. For me there are 2 shrubs in the garden that need careful pruning - one is the Forsythia and the other is the Crape Myrtle and unfortunately it is all too common to see both these wonderful shrubs wrecked through bad pruning.
