Hi - I have a sugar apple in container which is 3.5 feet tall but has only 6 lateral branches (in the middle, about 2 ft above the container) and all are packed close to each other. Can I do notching t induce more branches and make it bushier? Q.2 Do you think it will survive outdoor in California winter? It did go down to about 27-27 F in my zone this December in 2021.
After watching your video, about 2 weeks ago, I decided to try your pruning method on one of our recently planted sugar apple trees. Totally amazed on how happy and healthy the tree looks with its new “haircut”. Has lots of little green leaves shooting out of the buds and branches. Looking forwards to seeing what happens during the next few weeks. (Mozambique, Africa).
Thank you for the knowledge about sugar apple, very useful,If you don't mind please visit link juwana tani channel,I have seedless sugar apple . Thank's.
So you’re advising pruning in the fall? I live in SoCal zone 10b . Since they are both Anonas does this also apply to cherimoya? I recently got a fairly mature cherimoya in a 25 gal and has multiple long branches and am wondering if I should prune the branches now or wait till next late January. I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. Thanks
Haha yeah its only for a short moment that it will be like that, you can also remove like 75% of the leaves and leave a small amount if you don’t wanna strip it completely
Hello, do you trim your tree in September when the fruits are growing in size? Is it a good idea to trim away the extra branches and leaves that have no fruits, so the nutrients will concentrate and go into fruits on the tree. Thank you.
thanks for the video, I was waiting for this one. I wonder would you do a bigger tree the same way. Mine is maybe a year or two older than yours and I am scared to take completely defoliate it. Thanks again
Hello, Yes an older tree can be defoliated as well but if you want to you can always give it a pruning and remove only the first few leaves of the branches, this will invigorate new growth on an older and thicker based tree.
Hi, i am in Homestead, Florida. Far south close to the Keys. I have 3 trees i planted about 3 years ago and all though they have fruit this year they are small and some didn't get larger than a lemon. What time of year is best to do this? They stll have some fruit. Can i do this now?
Thank you so much for the wonderful video! I have a small farm in northwestern Cambodia. We have about 12 sugar apple trees that are 15 months old. We harvested our first crop this past June/July. We are in the monsoon now (September). From your experience and knowledge, can we use the system you describe in your video here in Cambodia (monsoonal tropics)? Thanks for your videos and for taking the time to help people produce food! I subscribed to your RU-vid channel. David
I like the way Yooaan farm keep them very low. I living in 4 seasons country. I have the first pruned at the beginning of Spring Can I have the second prune again at the beginning of Autumn to get the second fruits ? My Cherimoya are 10 years+ old. Just seriously learning how to look after them properly. Thank you ❤Cherimoyas 'lover.
Are the bugs on top of the fruit or inside? Are they that white scale ? If they are on top of the fruit (and not inside) you can take a high pressure hose attachment and pressure wash essentially the bugs off the sugar apple fruits.
I saw in a previous comment he said to do it when either when the tree stops producing fruit or early spring. I would do early spring because that’s when the tree is just waking up.
Correct I do this during the end of spring time, Really I do this once the tree is done fruiting and If I want to invigorate more flowers -- but ive learned that ive slowed down some of my younger trees by making them fruit again 2x a season - so it works better on mature and more established trees (but if you have 100s of sugar apple trees its ok to sacrifice a few to enjoy sugar apples in December.)
Ana Maria Guadayol Soursop on the contrary is a bit different in my experience, I have not yet fruited a Soursop on my tree yet but I’ve heard that the tree first must get large and lanky before it starts producing fruits and fruiting heavily - I believe this is because soursop or Guanabana is a relatively large fruit and the tree needs to be large as well - so I would not try this on Guanabana as there are other better pruning methods that would be better suited.
I finally found a sugar apple tree yesterday. It has small leaves, is it okay to prune now? It's trunk is 3/4 inches and the tree is about 3 feet tall.
Dan Marcus Great question! For my red ilama I recently removed many leaves - I didn’t prune it. For the Red ilama tree I am allowing to grow as large as it wants - but by removing leaves new shoots and branches are emerging - and hoping a flower will too!
I’m in Los Angeles and I just watched your video. Can I prune my sugar apple tree while it has a fruit growing on it? It had 3 but the other two dried out. Pls advice also on how to water it properly when it has fruit. Thank you 😊
Aloha, first of all thank you for your very informative video. My question is, can I start prune/defoliate the tree if there's still a lot of fruits, about half the amount of total crop in this year's season - 20 pcs left? It's mid September and almost the end of summer here in Hawaii.
Harley. Nice name. Can't wait to meet you. You know so much about Florida Fruit Trees! Got a question for you, Harley. Is it typical, when the temperature shoots up from Spring (82) to 99 degrees, the way it did in May 2021, for fruit trees to burn, get partial pattern leaf damage or simply drop most of their leaves? I was watering my Pineapple Mango, which I have shaped like a tree, and I was watering it, nearly ALL of the healthy looking leaves fell off. Now, days later, it's covered with leaving crowns all over. Avocados? Seemed like something I did but, the behavior is with all my fruit trees. I've just not experienced this before. What say you, sir?
Thank you Nutsack Gardening. I hope your trees are doing better now. It is not typical but sudden changes in temperature can affect trees if they are not protected/ healthy enough to endure it. But in your case that all your healthy trees dropped their leaves is unusual. How are your trees doing now?
@@gardenflorida Thank you kindly. After all the rains we've been thoroughly enjoying, and more on the way, the growth has been phenomenal. I learned a lesson about Neem's Oil, which was most of my problem. Putting oil on leaves in direct sun is bad. Also, I didn't realize there is a method to the madness. The "Canopy layer" is missing. I have since used the massively rapid growth of Everybearing Mulberrry and their ability to grow from cuttings well, to create an upcoming canopy. That, and, I had to have some Pakistan Mulberry, too. Their leaves are enormous. The citrus taught me that WEEKLY, not monthly leaf-miner preventing is necessary. I discovered the little pests spend 80% of their life in the soil. Moving my target to include the soil has made huge gains in their demise.
@@gardenflorida Oh..! You are welcome. Fellow fruit plant enthusiasts, let's support each other so that our agricultural efforts can progress and increase brotherhood.
Informative video, I bought a sugar apple plant two months back it came with 3 flowers when I bought it online but all of them dropped off. The plant is around 3 ft. The leaves are turning yellow and I don’t see any growth at all. Could you please let me know why the leaves turn yellow and how to avoid that and promote growth in the plant. Really appreciate your inputs. I am in Bay Area zone 9b. TIA
You may use 'Omscote Indoor & outdoor'. Growing sugar apple in the bay area will be a little more challenging as sugar apple prefers flat lands with no elevation compared to highlands such as california. But growing it is still possible. The sugar apple will defoliate come winter time but to promote new growth I recommend fertilizing and tipping your sugar apple.
Hi thanks for the video. I have a sugar apple tree in a large container for almost 3 years but no fruit. I'm in South Africa and we are going into winter. Should I prune it now? Spring should be in September/October.
In my experience rollinia takes awhile to form flowers after it was prune *But please keep note my rollinia trees are younger and have not yet fruited* The sugar apples in this case will fruit even at a young age such as 3 years. With my rollinia I defoliated about 40% of the leaves and so far it only has shown new leaf growth & branching.
Hi . Thank you for the video. Here un senegal West Africa we can grow sugar Apple and sourpoup and i')m wondering if we have any chance to grow this others annonacea fruits like custar Apple, cherimoya or Biriba. Does it required the same soil, same maintenance...
Hi...how can I propagate an old sugar apple tree (30 plus years old bearing over 100 fruits.in 1 year) with its branches or offshoots instead of using its seed from scratch.....? Would appreciate your advise
The flowers were so small due to the tree just being smaller and not having as much energy as it did the first flush around. Necessarily flower size does not correlate with fruit size in my experience, but smaller flowers are harder to pollinate. Also those flowers in the video that you saw actually grew more before they were able to release/ accept pollen.
Thanks for the video! I have a sugar apple tree about 6-7ft tall, all the leaves are turning dark with white aphids on them. I am in central florida myself. Should i give it a hard prune? its November now with temps in 60-70s here. Thanks!
At this time you could prune if you would like but we are about to go into dormancy stage so the sugar apples wont do any significant vigorous growth or flowering till about March - April. Aphids should go away once leave fall off here in the cold weather. Thank you for the support.
How often do you water your sugar apple tre after it's been pruned? I just did a hard prune on my tree. It's about 4ft tall in a 5 gallon bucket. Should I transplant to the earth now, or wait till it bears again? Thanks!
I water my sugar apple every other day or daily (if I can) sugar apples love water, they can take heavy amounts of water as they originate from South America and are used to the heavy rainfalls of where they are from. When they are pruned and are pushing new growth/setting new flowers it is vital to keep it well watered to allow your sugar apple the best chance to flower and set fruit. Hope this helps!
Thank you , currently you are able to prune the sugar apples because they are going into dormancy and won’t be affected much, you will see brand new growth early March.
Sugar apple leaves are black because around this time (cold season) they will defoliate and drop leaves, new leaves are to re-grow in march. A hard pruning can induce flowering.
Yes you may include some cow manure on the top layer of your sugar apple, but try not to mix it with the roots as the manure may hold too much moisture and cause root rot.
Fantastic video, thanks so much. I'm gong to prune my tree this week just like you did. Question, you mentioned pollinating the flower that was opened. Can you do a video on that please? Subscribed and Following you on IG now too as I'm in Orlando FL. Please keep making more videos :)
