We bought our property this past winter and found out this spring that we have a ton of frost grape vines growing (overgrowing) along the pasture panels around the property. Of course, they've wrapped themselves into the wild (thorny) blackberry bushes. Your video helped give me a bit of an idea of what to do or where to start. It's my Frankenstein project. Thanks!

Yes it is fascinating. I live in wine country North of where you are ,and have always been interested in the art and science of grape growing. I never could pass the chemistry 😭 classes to be able to learn how to make wine though lol! So I was excited to find your video on the grape pruning. I actually have my first Concord Table grape vine ready to plant, but my challenge is that I have a small patio. And I know they need alot of sun. Do you think a mobile planter pot with a trellis would work so I can move it when needed? Or do they like to be in one place better? Thank you

As an arborist, I think this is an important point. In regard to alcohol. The alcohol MUST dry before it does. It's duty. Simply wiping wet alcohol off will drastically reduce its efficacy. This process takes a little bit longer which is why a lot of people choose not to use it. Although alcohol is very effective. Bleach will do its job almost as soon as it's made contact. Then you can wipe it off , and it has done what it needed to do. After you have wiped it off, you will have no bleach in the cut. Either way is fine, but it's just important to understand. The outcall must dry on its own in order for it to kill the terms bacteria and like

First off, great video. Secondly, I think you're cutting just a little too close to the nodes. It's ok to leave a quarter inch or slightly longer. Cutting that close to the node puts it at a higher risk of being damaged by rot/disease or the pruners themselves. (Rule of thumb is often directly between the nodes, in the middle of the internode) Thanks for the video!

Thank you Steven for this helpful video. We are located in SD/Mission Bay and planted a variety of vines over the last 2 years. We are using cattle panels for trellising. I am trying to establish my shape now and will use the cane method. Our canes are much smaller in diameter than your canes. Almost too small to be considered 1st-year growth. Do you have any tips on when to start pruning? Even though they have been growing for a couple of years, they still seem too young to prune. Only one of our 4 vines has produced grapes.

So those 24 buds on those 6 canes will(should) produce grape clusters next year? So the following winter end after you ate those new grapes. Where do the new canes come off from you choose from. Is it off those 24 sites that you select 6 more . Or new branches that come off the vine while you were growing those 24 sites?

You can bend the 1 year old canes and tie them down to the fencing to help the re-centring effort you want to do since they still have flexibility.

thanks! very useful. Beginner's question: can you root those healthy canes you trimmed off and start a new plant, as I do with the other fruit bushes I grow? I'm living in suburbia on what used to be a 160-acre 19th century vineyard that had vines imported from the Neckar Valley of Germany. I'm always on the lookout for a vine that might have survived from those on the little bit of undeveloped land remaining. Wine grapes, not table, and I can't find a historical record of variety. Hope springs eternal that I'll find one.

Yes you can take the dormant canes and plant them into potting soil. Cut to 3 to 4 nodes, make sure at least 2 are buried, keep moist. The other option is to air layer for propagation.

TBH, my method was to wait until roots *just * showed out of the bottom of the pot. If I’d gently lift it out of the pot, to see how much space the roots are filling inside. If they are holding all of the paperwork tying soil together, then you can plant it by or into a larger pot. That way, you don’t leave it until it become pot-bound.
