Guide on how to pull Vortec 4200 DOHC VVT Inline 6 Trailblazer Engine cylinder heads from vehicles in the junkyard. These heads have larger valves and larger exhaust ports which allow for more cylinder head flow.

Calvin, Two comments: one, it is NOT a breaker bar - it is a "convincer" because you convince the bolt to relinquish its restraining torque, and two, you must properly refer to the sawzall as "God's gift to mankind" which ensures the tool takes on it's task with holy enthusiasm. hee hee -grinning as I type :)

My bad! Haha. In our case the breaker bar was actually breaking the bolts off. The head bolts in these engines snap on removal.

Hey calvin i did some looking on a barra forum for some pictures of the internals of the LPG/XR6 turbo barra (aka the stronger bottom end), and compared to your picures on the wiki of the vortec rods, the 4200 appears to have a beefier rod even the pre 2006 rods. The 4200 has far more meat around the wrist pin area, and more meat around the big end, meanwhile the "beam" of the rod looks very similar to the stronger barra conrods everyone is making 600+ with. I saw a video yesterday of a guy with a stock LPG barra making just over 700whp through a manual. So in theory i assume the vortec 4200 should be capable of holding the same power.

I'm trying to make a '71 Chevy 250 do something like what you're doing with the 4200. it's a futile effort, I fear. I'll save the 250 for a T rod, I think, and find a 4200 for my International. The stock numbers I'm seeing from the 4200 are impressive, and Holdener's dyno tracks are pool-table flat at very high numbers. Hard to beat for a pickup. Thanks for this!

I use an impact screwdriver with the Allen head on it for the head bolts, give it a smack with a BFH - Big F*cling Hammer. Ive never broken a head stud on the Atlas using this method. Are you using ARP head studs? Also, which head gasket are you using? I contacted Cometic as I’ve had good results with their MLS gaskets in the past.

Yeah. Intakes are all the same. There was 21 other ones in the yard if you want to go get one.

I don't. That's a tough effort. They're really crammed in there. Not a ton more effort than pulling the head though.

Question. I have a 2006 trailblazer 4.2 I’m replacing the head gasket turned the crank lined up the timing marks but when I removed the head I have cylinder 2-3 valves open is that spose to be like that From the front of the engine 2-3 I thought when you line up the timing marks all the valves will be closed and number 1 piston up to the top ? Any info would help

I normally get the flats at the back of the cam to be flat, and then get piston 1 to TDC, then line up the marks.

All I can say it if you didn't bring a 2 lb sledge to hit the head bolts and an impact gun you're going to break at least half of them taking it out but if you only want the head who gives a s***

Do you think that your setup would fit in an Isuzu/s10/ insert other brand mini truck? Preferably 90s model Isuzu pickup, always loved mine. Unfortunately, it popped lol. Wanted to get another and hot rod it. I think 4200/th400 combo would do it some good with the exception of a good rear end.

Quick question on the 06’+ heads. The valves are larger, but what about the exhaust ports? Are they larger? I was wondering if it would be worth it to get an 06’+ exhaust manifold if the ports are larger and I can find one that isn’t a turd. Having an issue getting a Kooks header delivered to Ca.

Yes. The ports are larger, and the exhaust manifold is larger too. The real ticket should be to get an 08maniofpld because it is like two 3 into 1 manifolds that merge into each other later. Go look at the wiki. I have picture on there.

@@Calvin-Nelson Sweet! That’s what the Kooks manifold is, 3/2/1 but the 1 is 3” piping. You wouldn’t happen to have one laying around would you? Or a 4200 site that might have them?
