Just a quick video to hopefully warn anyone who is taking apart the bottom end of a Chevy 4.2 inline 6-cylinder engine. The main cap bolts will break during removal, just like the head bolts do.

Wards best engines list every year. Really good stuff. I've got over 250K on one & still doesn't use or leak a drop of anything. You need to keep the oil changes up, tho, as a dirty VVT valve will starve the crank for oil.

This is the way. I found a punch that fits just inside of the socket, which holds the punch upright, while I give it a good blast.

My Dad taught me to tighten it back up after that first crack and then repeat until it’s smooth, I do it on basically all old bolts. I like this a lot though thanks Going to see if you have more vids on head or manifold work

The way we dealt with these when I worked at GM was a “bolt shaker” attachment for air hammers. Find the one that takes a socket. I think mayhew or lisle made it? Works great.

You're correct. That's an extremely effective method

I broke only one bolt on the bottom. I didn't break any head bolts. I used an easy out to get the bolt out. Used a transfer punch to punch exactly in the center of the bolt. Then used a left hand drill bit, then an easy out.

Use a length of 1" steel round bar cut square ends as a big punch - it transmits the hammer force. Used it for several atlas engine tear downs.

Just found this out. I’m in the process of purchasing one before the rush happens. Once people realize these engines out perform the 2JZ’s of the world they will be all over them!

But mating it with a manual transmission seems impossible.

I wonder if removing them with an impact wrench might provide the same effect.
@drive-channel1834
@drive-channel1834 11 дней назад
Not really. Impact wrench tends to twists the bolt, which makes situation worse. It needs impacts from the head down. Kinda like removing screw using manual impact screwdriver.

Sad thing is people will search out this video after 4 bolts are broke 😢

How did you get your broken ones out?
@AutoRex101
@AutoRex101 Год назад
Had to build up the bolt hole and weld a nut on it. If you do that, you have to chase the threads with a tap. You might have luck with bolt extractors though.

Why not loosen all bolts than remove them? They don't torque them down one completely at a time.
