Want to add some PUNCHED UP COLOR to your painting? Well, this video is for you. Join me in this lesson where I took the time to answer many of my subscribers who have asked how to intensify color in a painting. Sometimes our reference image may be a little dull in color, but that doesn't mean you can't still use it to create a painting full of life and color. You can even veer away from the colors that are in the photo or the real life scene as long as you obey a few important rules. This video will give you those rules and more! It's long, but full of useful information for any artist!
Happy Painting!

one thing I am learning here following you along is as a beginner do not depend on blending. do not blend, unless you want the special effect. I have ruined two tries, thinking to always blend...not necessary, pressure and the correct color is what it needs. blocking in the under colors are key I do see now. I may learn this yet! thank so for the teaching it is soo helping me and valuable.
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 4 года назад
danielle auer I can tell by your comment that you have already learned a lot! I have learned over the years that the pastels really blend themselves and other than some initial blending if you want to cover the surface or create an underpainting there is really no need to over blend. It actually muddies the color and the brilliance of the pastels is lost.

Illustrative, non impressionistic art does not have to be hyper-realism, which I do not understand as art, but I think that both impressionistic and illustrations are beautiful. Even illustrations leave a good bit for the brain to sort out. Details are in the heart if the artist, and the viewer, just my 2c.

I do not have teratriad on my wheel. I will have to foogle an image or something. I may need to gt the pocket wheel. Made by the same company, the one I have applies basically to watercolor and some info is not here bc it may be N/A. It's an invaluable tool, but another 10 bucks! I will try to see if I can research it out. :) Increasing saturation, great tip! Using photos, let alone imaging tweaks is brand new to me, but my son showed me some basics of Irfanview. Its really clean, powerful, and I am using it most to resize precisely until I get a proportional divider.

One thing I have a lot of trouble is with brightness and saturation. I'm finding out if you add white you lose saturation, so it seems the only way to combat that is to instead add a naturally brighter color of a different hue. So say as a blue local value is lit up by sunlight, I would add yellow? or the next warmer color on the color wheel. If you had a pure white man made light, then you would mix white? Is it dependent on the light source, and can it generally be as simple as 'yellow light, add yellow to local color' or 'blue light add white and blue'? Thanks

I am impressed with your pastel paintings and the usefulness of your videos. Although I have experience with graphite drawing, I want to try my hand with color and have been considering using soft pastels. However, I am concerned about the pastel dust and mess because I do not have a studio or isolated area in my apartment. I also have a very inquisitive cat. Thus I thought that maybe I should try pastel pencils (Faber-Castell PITT) or even colored pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromes). What is your opinion on starting with pastel pencils or colored pencils rather than soft pastels? Also, do you think it is better to go with pastel pencils or colored pencils? Thanks for any information you could provide to me.

Do you mix the different kinds of pastels in your storage? I have noticed that there are tons of 'pastel' organizers but when I watch you and other really talented pastel artists they have piles of pastels all mixed together by color. I have been wanting to use the water color pastels and the Derwent inktense I am afraid of mixing them into the same stash. Do they all 'wash' with water or all with alcohol?
@monetcafe
@monetcafe 6 лет назад
Hi Syd, most serious pastel artists do arrange their pastels according to color and value, but that doesn't mean we don't still have some sets (from the manufacturer) still in tact. Focusing on value is so important with good artwork and having them arranged together with the value/color system is really helpful. I have found that all of my soft pastel varieties work with water or alcohol. I can't wait to get someDerwent inktense and try them. If you haven't joined our FB group you should. There are so many pastel artists (of every level) all sharing and helping each other. It's called, Monet Cafe' Art Group, and you do have to ask to join. When you answer the questions, just say that you heard about the group from me on this channel. Happy Painting!
