How to PUSH during labor | Best positions to push baby out!

We've all watched that scene in any given movie where the mother is sweaty and screaming while pushing 3-4 times to deliver her baby, but what is that experience really like?!? How do you actually push at the end of your labor and get the baby out?!? This video covers that topic and so much more! Did you know there are actually positions that can help you get the baby out faster so you're not pushing for hours and hours?! Certain positions will help to open your pelvic outlet, so that the baby can rotate, come down and ultimately come out! On average first time mothers will push between 1-3hrs when delivering their first baby! Since I started implementing these positions as a labor and delivery nurse I have not had a mother push longer than about an hour! I've seen more vaginal deliveries and less situations where the mother pushes for hours and then either has to have a vacuumed delivery or go for a c-section. My goal is to give you mamas every opportunity to have the easiest and most enjoyable labor and delivery experience and I would hate after all the effort to get you to the point of pushing for the finale to end with you physically and mentally exhausted headed for a c-section. I want to equipped you to be proactive and empowered in your labor and delivery process! Go forth and push your baby into this world with confidence, less tearing, less operative deliveries and an easier recovery!

Great advice. I totally agree with you about asserting yourself about what position you want to be in. I gave birth to my first baby on all fours. It felt natural and opened everything up to let baby out, also no tear. Second baby came quicker and when i was ready to push the midwife and doctor started putting the stirrups in and I said "no I'm getting on my hands and knees like first time" and I just put myself in that position. They were a bit flustered but I didn't care because I was birthing my baby how I wanted. My partner was also supportive of what I wanted.

I am due next month with my first baby and have been intentionally watching a lot of content on exercises to do to prepare for labour and vids like this one which talk about the difference positions one can opt for. Thank you so much for such educational content. I will be delivering at my local clinic which does have a good facility, but I have been realising that I should find out how versed are they with the different pushing positions because generally we know of just the one where the mom lays on her back. Thanks so much for these, I am super nervous but I must say that these videos comfort me a lot 🙏🏽.

Everyone is different, I’m very in tune with my body so focused breathing and concentration worked wonders for me. I’m due with my 7th baby and I’ve had everything from hospital, water birth, home birth, posterior, to c-section with my 6th almost 6 years ago because of being breach. Now going for a VBAC at a hospital with a supportive team that will even deliver breach. Your videos have been very helpful! I tried spinning babies to flip my baby, but he would not budge. My other babies would always change from transverse to head down in active labor. Even though I am trained in birth education, your calmness, tips, and the reassurance that mother has the choice is incredibly comforting/helpful. Thank you for the great videos!
@PregnancyBirthParenting101
@PregnancyBirthParenting101 2 года назад
🥰💞😘 Thank YOU so much for that wonderful feedback!!! If you feel like the baby has flipped to head down or your provider does an external cephalic version and flips the baby, manually manipulating the baby by using ultrasound and hands on your belly, then wear a postpartum band (obviously a larger size than what you would need postpartum) to try to keep baby from flipping back to breach. Wishing you the best of luck Mama because you can absolutely do it!!!

Would you consider viewing RU-vid video 'The free birth of our twins'. The vertical position ensures any poo in mum's bowel falls way to the ground, maintaining sterility of the opening to the birth canal. Avoiding tearing and cutting by 'Birth Canal Widening' to 10cm diameter prior to birth, by Aniball, Epi-no Delphine Plus birth facilitating devices or finger tips (Wikipedia UK 'Perineal Massage') or visit my RU-vid channel. Thank you.

@@irinaberseneva9635 you can ask for an enema. Doctors don’t give it today, but they used to when my mom was delivering children. Knowing that I asked for one before contractions were bad. Knowing you’re clear of poo helps you to feel better knowing you’re pushing just the baby out.

When you find your thoughts spiraling turn your focus to your breath. The sensation of your chest rising and falling. Go for a walk. Write down your thoughts, fears, concerns and then write down specifically what you want to happen. Once you do that, see what you can control and what you cannot. Write each thing you can't control on a separate sheet of paper. Read it then crumple it up and throw it away because you can't control it and therefore you have to let your mind let go of your grip on it. Let me know if that helps!

Great inputs, Haley. Mothers who has you as an attending nurse will be forever grateful to you. Teaching them to properly breathe through every contraction is a way to relax the muscles down there instead of tensing up. Babies come out whether mother will push or not. FER, fetal ejection reflex is baby's part of the birth process. This is possible when drugs are not administered though. So guiding them to breathe deep and long in every contraction instead of fighting the wave will help them progress faster actually than any drugs. Kudos to your heart for the mothers.

😂😂 Pregnant with bub #11 here. I've found on my hands and knees made Labor a LOT easier. But every woman is different. My tips are: 1. Remember your body was built for this. Yes, it'll hurt. But only for a short time in the scheme of things. We have extremely good medical care only a call away. 2. Breathe slowly and try to relax as much as you can. Breathing too rapidly will wear you out faster and increases your risk of needing intervention. (Forceps, vacuum etc)tensing up your body will also wear you out more quickly and increase your pain. Gas and air can be a great way to help you have something to focus on other than the pain. 3. Choose carefully who you want in the room with you when you give birth. The last thing you probably need is umpteen people in the room,tension or arguments breaking out. Don't be afraid to leave people out if they have the ability to make you tense up. 4. While I recommend trying to give birth without pain meds, don't be a hero. If you are struggling to cope with the pain, it's ok. You're not a failure or less of a woman, speak up! 5. Be kind to your partner and the medical professionals looking after you. While it's difficult, some of these medics have delivered hundreds of babies and have learnt a thing or two. Try and listen to their instructions and follow through. But speak up if something doesn't feel right. And as for your birth partner, husband's etc. Often they can't stand to see you in pain and don't know how to respond. 😊

When I was in labor my SIL brought my son to the ER and my husband walked down to be with him until he went back home. So I was laboring alone for a few hours and at one point I was leaning on the head of the bed and the nurse came in to up my pitocin and she kind of mumbled but I still heard her. She said "oh great, one of THOSE MOMS" I looked at her and asked what the heck that was suppose to mean. She looked at me with a shocked/surprised look. I told her she wasn't my nurse anymore. She said there wasn't anymore nurses available. Then I told her I'd take no nurse over her and that she wasn't allowed back in my room. I was going to leave a review, but I wasn't in labor for long and had such amazing post partum nurses that I wasn't thinking about it when I left and I had forgotten her name. If she had asked I would've told her that I was having alot of back pain and leaning forward helped a little.

I am 32 weeks, and I am nervous about the pain and not knowing what and how to take control. I felt you were talking to me from the position where you faced the bed, held on and push and as well as the squat bar. I will be asking my Dr. at my next visit, if they have that in the hospital room. Thanks this was really informative, especially because you are pregnant , and in the field and very clear explanation. Thanks 🥰

I am one of the lucky women who can push babies out no problem. My first pregnancy, my water broke at 1:15 AM and my daughter was born at 3:34 AM. I didn't have any contractions until my water broke and they started at 3 minutes apart. The Doctor barely made it into the room in time, but the L&D staff was amazing! I'd definitely recommend having a birth plan printed out so you can just relax and focus on your delivery with minimal interruptions. Also have a couple back up plans in place, just in case things dont go as planned.

@@PregnancyBirthParenting101But in my country, doctor coerce to lay flat on table and bend knees, and even lay a long 'Fabric sheet on belly till knees' ony gynac can see our parts from other end while we are coerced to lay flat and look at ceiling whole time and not question anything, doctor only puts hands inside our birth canal, does not tell us anything abt pushing or baby progress instead lock our feet in stirrup and 'Strongly press belly unnaturally some kind of painful fundus pressure', pull baby, cut our vag with scissor and do all medical procedure directly on other end tge moment we lay flat on bed upon their coercion, that We cannot see progress of baby crowining, they will scold us, and shout with abusive vulgar words about our sexuality if we demand autonomy and self-dignity Women here think that doctors pull out babies from women's still body, and not know that woman can do hard work to eject baby, when I say women need to move in labor to faciitate baby moving down canal, even 'Doctors' show disbelief, forgwt abt mother

1st time mama here. Due next week.. lol scared of tearing especially severe tearing... so i want to make sure I'm understanding this, you recommend side pushing the most to prevent tearing? So the old school on your back with legs up, or squatting is more likely to tear the perineum? Thank you for all the information
@PregnancyBirthParenting101
@PregnancyBirthParenting101 3 года назад
Squatting once you're crowning is more likely to cause more tearing, but is a great position to help get to that point and then you could be on your back or side to actually deliver. Being on your back doesn't increase the likelihood of tearing. Being on your side helps to open the exterior pelvis, so you make more room for baby to move down and under the pelvic bone and at that point you can turn to your back if you want because the hardest part of pushing is getting the baby under the pelvic bone.
