HOW TO PUT BACKSPIN ON YOUR WEDGES

Something that many aspire to do is spin the wedges back on the greens, its certainly an impressive shot, especially if you can fly the ball past the flag and have it zip back closer!
This short video shows you exactly what you need in order to create that backspin on your wedge shots and get that action that we see the from the pro's.

You didn't promise us a sure-fire way to do this. You mentioned all the variables and what needs to be in place to produce the shot we want. You did an excellent job of it. Thanks.

Great vid mate, I would also like to point out the fact that you do involve knees and hips in the swing which will increase the club speed a lot. I often see and head people playing wedges "just using their arms and wrists" believing that that is the basic way to hit a wedge. And, unless you are creating at least some club speed ideally using 1. knees 2. hips players will never see their balls spin at all.
@craigseddon4884
@craigseddon4884 3 года назад
My personal technique it to loosen my grip, relax shoulder rotation, reduce arm movement but maximise wrist break which I correct to neutral but I only start to neutralise about 20-25 degrees from impact with the ball. It massively increases club head speed without adding distance and the whipping motion increases friction between club and ball to maximise spin off the club face.

Hey chris, I have noticed I tend to knife/blade and coast my ball to the opposite side of the green or I'll open or I think I open the face and hit the ball off the toe and send it sideways. What should I be mindful of?

Great video, definitely something for us all to learn about. On the ball there is a great article in this month's Today's Golfer magazine about balls (Mygolfspy has also done comprehensive testing on more balls than the magazine but I have concerns about their methodology). For most amateur golfers the magazine article results show that there is virtually no significant difference in distance between the golf balls tested even with a driver (5 yards at worst at nearly 250 yards carry), and crucially no real difference between front & back dispersion between the balls. The 2 areas where there is a noticeable difference between golf balls are left/right dispersion (manufacturing tolerances?) and spin rates. The spin rates differences could be as much as 15% which makes sense as some balls are marketed as high spin and others distance - it would be highly amusing to see if the marketing matched the actual magazine spin results! Highest spinning balls with wedges that the magazine tested were the Pro V1x, Z-Star Xv and Bridgestone Tour B Xs (there seems to be a X theme there) lowest spinners were the Bridgestone Tour RX, Pearl Pure Pro X and Wilson Duo Pro. There did not seem to be any corellation between compression and spin or between number of layers in construction and spin.

Golf balls are really hard to choose, as you say they often claim to be the longest, the highest spin etc, but in reality the ball can only do so much. I’ve played around with the TP5 and the TP5X and in my experience I have always noticed more differences with golf balls the closer to the green I get. The TP5X for me just feels a little better and the numbers are great too

When I play indoors using a track-man I spin the heck out of the ball on the screen. But when I play for real the best I can hope for is a nice check -up. I wonder if thats due to the things you mentioned; club face quality, green softness and ball quality.
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 4 года назад
Hey Glenn, a lot of that is due to the quality of contact between club and ball, out on the course it’s almost impossible to keep debris from being between the two, grass, moisture etc so often it won’t spin as much. 👍

How do you lose friction if the ball stays on the face longer with high loft?
@harleycleanslate
@harleycleanslate 3 года назад
SO....it seems to me then that each lofted club, say from 8 iron to lob wedge will have a launch angle at which it produces the most spin and ideal yardage at which it is most effective...yes? It would make sense then to go to a launch monitor and figure out at what distance from flag you get the most benefit from each of those clubs. For instance; I may be 50 yards from the hole but at 40 degrees launch angle my 9 iron produces the best spin. If I want to make a low 'grabby' shot from that yardage then that is the club I would choose...likewise a 60 degree wedge from 20 yards(given that you have to hit it more gently for that distance) would be equally as 'grippy' right?

Thanks for that heads up. Deloft and swing a little smoother helps. Just want to control it better with the club that I know hits my number. Figure it could be an interesting video for Chris to make if he doesn't already have one stashed somewhere. Might be as simple as changing my ball. Gaming Pro V1x... Hard to move away because the flight characteristics of that ball are money but it is a spin monster. Anxious to try the Left Dash model of the Pro V1x when it comes out in October. Supposed to be the same high launch as Pro V1x but lower spinning. Srixon Z Star XV did well for me. Might have to break them out again for a few rounds. I sought after that spin that would zip the ball back 8-10 feet for the longest time but now that I've got it I can't seem to get rid of it. LOL it's great for front pin locations and sending it to the middle of the green and backing it up to the pin but not so great for those middle and back pins.
@liddle13
@liddle13 4 года назад
Ross Lillebo you really want to concentrate on a lower flight Also reducing swing speed a little if you still want to maintain height. Fuller swing lower slopes for hi soft landing. Lower flight faster speed. One hop then stop.
@uwrossl
@uwrossl 4 года назад
@@liddle13 Yep. Thx for the reply. Familiar with those options per previous comment on delofting and smoothing my swing out. Still just spinning more than i'd like with short irons through wedges. Peeling them back off the front of the green(greens are extremely soft and receptive). After playing yesterday I am pretty convinced that it's going to come down to a ball change for me. Gaming Srixon Z785s in the irons and Vokey SM7's in the wedges. Have the KBS $-Taper 120 shafts which is a combo that should already knock the spin down a bit. I think the New Pro V1x is just too much of a spinner now for how my game has progressed this year. Tested the ProV1. It knocked a little spin down and liked it alright but like the higher flight I get from the Pro V1x. Srixon Z Star XV seems like the best option so far to move in as my gamer. Flies high and doesn't spin near as much as the Titleist(about 700-1000 revs less for me). Haven't tried any of the Bridestone balls yet and may test them. The Taylormade TP5 series didn't wow me. The Pro V1x Left Dash coming out in October has me really intrigued and sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. I'll keep the regular Pro V1x in the bag for times where I get on a course that's faster and firmer than my home course. Cheers

Golf galaxy or pga you can get a good vokey or mg4 for $80-120. I will say one thing you want good quality on is wedges since spin is so important for that club. Honestly even a driver you could just get a good shaft that fits you and almost any head will work fine. Wedges are one of the most equipment dependent type shots imo. Even putter you can putt with anything

I just saw a video of Phil Michelson who said that you CANNOT pitch or chip w/ the ball in the MIDDLE of your stance. The ball MUST be off your back foot, weight well forward, lots of shaft lean and open club face. This is just the opposite of what you (and a LOT of others) show and what you show definitely works. Why the difference in the technique/setup/execution of the same shot?
