Since BFS spools are shallow, the inches retrieved per turn doesn’t change much as the spool fills. So, I just calculate the number of turns required to put X amount of line on the spool.
@HobieWanKenobi
@HobieWanKenobi 3 года назад
That's a way to do it. Measuring it out is consistent whether using a BFS reel, spinning reel or an ice fishing inline reel.

I use Berkley nanofil 8lb and for me I can cast farther then 2lb trout magnet line with a shimano slx bfs and kastking zypher 5.6 rod by a noticeable amount. Since I am new to bfs and bait casting reels in general the extra strength in the line gives me more confidence when I hook trees or backlash to not need to retie or respool.

I was running 2lb Nanofil on a BFS reel for a while. I had to be super careful. That line gets frayed just looking at it.

For hi-viz, the VARIVAS Super Trout Advance Sight Edition is my pick. It has been super tough, casts great and is easily seen. That is great for low light fishing for brown trout. They love to hit topwater at night. Other fish in lakes don't mind the green color either.

How often do you change out your line and what should we look for to know when to change out our line ?
@HobieWanKenobi
@HobieWanKenobi 3 года назад
Good questions. I change my line at least once a year. I fish a lot too. I used to have to change it more but, I been using better line the last few years and that helped me change as often. As far as signs of seeing when to change out line, when there are noticable kinks or damage beyond the last few meters. Also, I test my line strength about 3m from the end after a few months to see if the line got weak. Doesn't have to be really hard pulling, as a fish doesn't actually put a ton of stress on one spot on your line after stretch and rod bending. Also, if you notice a lot more breakoffs (other than pike biting your line), might be time to change. Lastly, you can always flip the line on your reel halfway through the season to get the fresh line buried on your reel and get the used line buried in the spool.

I meassure out as I reel on the line via this method. First I determine the reel capacity in meters and the line retrieve rate per each turn of the handle. Lets say the reel holds 45 meters and the retrieve ratio is 81cm pr turn. so 45m x 100cm/m ÷ 81cm = 50 turns. Then just count out fifty turns as you wide on the line and you will have a full bfs rreel. No line on the ground and you can easily do it indoors.
@HobieWanKenobi
@HobieWanKenobi Год назад
The IPT of the reel changed as line is stacked on the spool, changing the "spool diameter", taking more line in per turn each rotation.

I always use braid to Fluorocarbon leader. BFS: Sunline Siglon PE 4, Tailwalk Power Eye Pee Wee or Varivas Avani Lightgame (PE 0.6 to 0.8). Non BFS: Suffix 832, Power Pro Super 8 slick or Daiwa 8 braid. Nice Video but quite an academic approach to spool a reel. Indeed you are right to do so as I have way too much useless line leftover. Well done 👍

This is great information. I've fished for many years and never once measured out a spool of line. Nor have I tied onto the spool without first adding a little backing to tie on to. I am just jumping into BFS and I have a Curado BFS reel. I'm going to try your suggestions here. With the cost of good fluorocarbon this will save me money over the long run. Thanks!

this is a few months late but I'll share .... I do a clinch or uni BUT unlike no/less tag , I like to leave a 1/2 or 3/4 inch tag end and have it sit flat across the left-right width of the spool so that when I wind in line, the line will sit on the tag end left-right multiple times giving it more grip and avoid slipping even more.... 2 safetys so to speak. So yeah, I dont cut off the tag end but leave enough of it to cover at least half the width of the spool

It’s important to measure you max cast. I recently casted and my line got snagged on the spool from the backing to main line knot.

Very true. I mentioned in many videos having short casts in streams, 25-33m is enough. If fishing in lakes, 33-50m is best.

A lot of people like braid with BFS gear. I use it but, I use fluorocarbon or mono most times. You could always use a leader to prevent your braid from rubbing of rocks and such.

Something I have never thought of in over 30+ years of fishing. Very good idea. I have gone to buying bigger spools of line to try and manage some of the leftover line. I am sure some of the line degrades over time on my shelf so measuring it out could definitely help. If not just to know how much you have left after filling up your spool would definitely be helpful!

I only ever use 30m of line, be that Light braid or fluoro. I think it's more common over here in the UK to use 50m or less. I just find out what the retrieval rate is per turn of the handle and do it that way. ie Aldebaran has 63cm per turn (according to the box) so 30/0.63=47.6 turns of the handle. I usually round up to 48. Alphas Air 2020 is easier as its 75cm (40 turns)

No. You do not measure how much you want on. You spool it up until it is full. All reels work best when they are FULL. If at the end of a spool you have to throw a little away, then that’s the cost of doing it RIGHT. Keep those tape measures out of your way when spoiling a reel. This is the dumbest thing I have ever seen. Also you always spool with the reel on the rod and the line through at least the last guide.
@HobieWanKenobi
@HobieWanKenobi 3 года назад
Steve. This is just to measure the amount of line you want to take off the spool of line. If your spool isn't full taking the desired amount of line off the line spool, you can use backing as I mentioned. You can still meet your intent of having a full reel and still be economical with your line.
@arnemueller2112
@arnemueller2112 3 года назад
With regards to BFS fishing it‘s not always smart to fill the spool until it’s full. Fishing streams as Hobie mentioned doesn‘t need that much of a line and the less line weight sits on the spool the lighter baits you can cast with ease. So it‘s definitely not the dumbest thing as you mentioned….
@HobieWanKenobi
@HobieWanKenobi 3 года назад
@@arnemueller2112 I think Steve point is valid in most fishing situations in regard to having the spool full. Stream BFS fishing is its own little world
