A few years ago, I released a video on how to do a proper tight turn on the ice. Often however, you know HOW to perform a skill, but you still can't get it done; you're making some kind of mistake, but aren't really sure why, or maybe don't even know what that mistake is!
In this video I show you the most common mistakes that I've seen ice skaters and hockey players make while turning, and I'm sure that you'll find the mistake that you are making in this video as well!
Of course, I don't just show you the mistakes, but also how to fix them!
Have fun out there on the ice!

As always, great video! I found a figure skating instructor at my local rink who offers pretty cheap one-on-one sessions recently and it's been awesome for just working on the small details that make such a huge difference. That and your videos will hopefully have me being able to actually turn in both directions instead of being hockey Zoolander.

You’re welcome! Figure skating instructors are great for stuff like turning and other skills when you need good edges. Just sometimes I think hockey clubs overdo it and have a figure skating take over ALL of their powerskating. Have fun practicing!

Frohe Weihnachten!

Good stuff as usual, Marcel. There is a more extreme version of the punch turn, where you slide with both feet, like a hockey stop, use the momentum to direct your skates in the opposite direction and cross over out of the turn. I teach it by having the kids jump into the turn. To be honest, I don’t know which one is faster or allows for narrower turns. What do you think?
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 5 месяцев назад
Hi, yeah we do this sometimes too, and use a Balke/Pommes to jump over because it’s fun, and try to slide into the turn. The narrowest will always be with both feet, because really, the hockey stop is actually the narrowest turn of all if you go back directly the other way. But I don’t have them specifically do a punch with 2 feet sliding, because I think they will do it automatically if they need to go narrower.

I wish I had this when I was a kid. It would have elevated my skills so much. But I didn't have a very good coach or he would work with kids who hadn't grown up skating both on ice and in-line and I also skated aggressive inline street and park. So I was comfortable but could have used refinement 💯. Thanks coach 🙏!

You're welcome! I'll be honest: I had more bad coaches than good ones growing up. That was one of the reasons I wanted to become a coach.

Hello Marcel, Mighty thanks for these videos, we like to watch them, and we always waiting for the new clips. May I ask do you speak hungarian? I know that this would be a lot of extra work for you, but would be great and big help for the hungarian kids if you could make selectable hungarian audio narration for your videos. 😊 I wish you the best for the new year! BÚÉK! 😊

Could you consider making a video on how to train our weakside skating? My crossovers to the right and stops with my left foot leading feel so unnatural compared to the other direction. I think the issue is related to what you noted in this video - twisting the shoulders and torso while shifting your hip. I feel like my body "snaps back" to what it considers its strongside position whenever I try to skate towards my weakside. I always practice my weakside 5x more than my strongside and I'm still struggling, so I think I'm practicing ineffectively. Thank you!
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 5 месяцев назад
The thing is, there isn’t much material for me to cover in a video about that. It’s basically your weak side more than your strong side (which you are already doing so that’s good👍), and filming both sides, so you can see the technical differences between good and bad.

Transition from roller to ice, do you have any advice for turns. In general, I think the transition starts from weight-on-heels in rollers to weight-on-toes on ice (like doing hockey stops) would you apply that to turns as well and what other differences are there?
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 4 месяца назад
Yeah pretty much the same on ice. Once you get the hang of it you can turn tighter on ice though by shaving the ice with your inside leg (called a punch turn in fancy Hockey lingo 😃)
@schzschzsch
@schzschzsch 5 месяцев назад
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool 5 месяцев назад

When you're pushing that inside knee forward and putting most of your weight on it, is your chin, knee and tie all lined up on that inside leg too?
@MarcelsHockeySchool
@MarcelsHockeySchool Месяц назад
I’m not sure about my chin. I think the upper body can disconnect a bit from the lower body, but I definitely want my hip, knee and ankle on the same side lined up.
@nurmibeowulf
@nurmibeowulf 4 месяца назад
The ankle problem comes from not going to the back of the outer edge. Just try to lift the toes a little bit. If you stay in the middle you need to bend the ankle to come to the outer edge...

@MarcelsHockeySchool
