Thank you for taking the time to explain your sawmill and different ways to use it. With farming getting to be tougher these days diversity is the key this just adds another commodity I can use for the farm. I’m considering doing the same thing just making sure I can get my investment in the initial startup back thanks again good content!!!

❤😊I can remember going to the Sawmill East of Le Sueur Mn and picking up the Boards They sawed. And I can remember putting lath between those Boards to dry in the lean-to then we ran it through the Plainer and made Cubby holes for the Shop . That was 45+Year's AGO 😊😊❤❤

When I was just starting out as an Apprentice painter I used to do side work for a well to do family on Lake Dr. here in Mil. The house had a ballroom on the top floor and servant quarters. The woodwork in the front foyer, stairway were in quarter cut white oak. The doors, door casings, chair rails and wainscoting all solid quarter cut oak. The parlor and dining rooms were the same as the the foyer , doors, but in Black Walnut, including the beamed ceilings. The rest of the home had solid Birch.

I'm a retired carpenter/ contractor. I built houses for 50 year , grew up on a small farm. Mom worked off the farm to make it work. In my later years I purchased a saw mill for a hobby. I learned a lot about the ways logs were sawed and why. The reason for quarter sawing white oak, it would give you the most strength in what you needed it for. They done it because much of the wood was used in wagons. The axels , bolsters, reaches, singletrees and double trees for the horses to hitch to, and spokes and rims foe wooden wheels. Tonges to hitch to for pulling the loads. The furniture of the day was merely a by product that furniture builders could buy cheap. Kind of like you were saying about hickory. As for marketing, I discovered by sizing, and building a kiln for drying( same concept as drying corn) then aquire a line saw and planer you have a lot wider market place. For example, locate someone that makes wooden burial caskets. They generally buy mostly quartered white and red oak. Good luck in your ventures and keep milking. I love butter and ice cream, and oh yes the other by-product, milk. Keep those videos coming. Watch every one you've ever done. I'll even forgive you for having an Oliver in the mix.

I love quarter sawn white oak. If you ever have some to sell to a hobbiest woodworker, I'd be interested. I'm close enough to pick it up too. Love the mill videos.

Wondering if the pile of sawdust would be a good thing to mix in with the manure spreader, any benefits to the fields?

I built new window sills for my house here in TN a few years ago. The windows were original to the house in 1955. I remember trying to find quarter sawed 2x4"s to use for the the multi angled sill. When I found a quarter sawed piece, it was straighter w/ much closer grain. I used the best pieces I could find to mill the sills from. I primed and painted them and installed them 4 years ago. They are just as straight and true today as they were the day I installed them. It was well worth the time I spent hunting for the quarter sawed lumber. Great video George!!

Everybody has there own way of quarter sawing, one thing I noticed one thing you need to seal the ends of your logs to reduce checking with your boards. Use Anchor Seal.

I use to work for a guy, mostly doing the farm work, and he did logging. There was a young man that wanted to work in the woods to see how it was done, and what was involved. So, when he would stop by the barn I'd ask him questions about what he did that day, One was, did you cut any knot (not) hickory, well , he didn't know, but he cut a lot of different trees, and the other was, did you cut any single trees(meaning for horses) well he did, how about double or triple trees, he didn't know, but he cut a lot of trees!🤣 Have you ever used shumac? don't know if you have it out there, but they don't get very big around, I know a guy that would saw down the middle, like you're doing, It has a beautiful color and grain! Nice! you'll figure it out!

Sawmilling gets in your blood doesn't it ! Iwatch a lot of them. Years ago I built my own bandsaw mill similar to the Woodmiser. I powered it with a 5hp electric motor. Dad and I sawed many thousand feet of Black Ash for craft projects.
