Ken, thanks for posting this comment. The RedditExtractoR package has been rewritten within the last month and changed its commands! It looks like we'll need to go back to the drawing board and post some new content to describe how to use the package.
Great Video! But what about more complex methods then only assign a word into positive or negative? Then we are in Machine Learning, isn't it? And how accurate is this method? I guess it has a lot to do with the right dictionary at the right place (some teenagers will use other words then some guys in an philosophy subreddit or whatever).
Hello James, I am running into some trouble and was wondering if you would be able to help. When I get to the sentiment code, I run into an error: Error in FUN(content(x), ...) : invalid multibyte string 1. Any idea on how to correct this?
Hi, Samir. Unfortunately, in order to really figure out what's going on, I'd need to see your entire code. If you'd like to send me that code, please shoot me an email message to james.m.cook@maine.edu .
@@pierrebenkiran212 hi, Pierre! I did not get a response from the previous commenter that contained code, but since you’re a second person who brought it up I looked into it. It turns out you get that error when the text string you are trying to analyze is not encoded in the right way. Try encoding the string as UTF8 by using the enc2utf8(your string) command! $newstring
Unfortunately, there isn't much of an archive available with the API; at best, the backward collection goes about a month. This means if you'd like to gather data from this means, you ought to gather it as you go.
@@JamesCookUMA Hmmm insteresting. Well is there an alternative method available? I'm working on a final project and I need to compare sentiment over a time-frame to determine when the subreddit had the most positive comments...
@@loganingram6716 Why yes there is! Rather than relying on the API, you could manually visit a subreddit and collect old discussion text through the ol’ cut and paste. Not everything has to be automated to work, right? And then there are web scrapers. They’d work, too.
@@JamesCookUMA Mr. Cook, excellent suggestions, sir! Love your content and the fact that you take the time to help out in your comments says a lot about you! I subscribed! Hope to see more great videos from you soon!
Hi James, thanks for the video! I have a question about get_reddit function. When I tried to pull out the text from Reddit, it didn't work and kept showing "Cannot connect to the website, skipping..." on my Rstudio. Do you have any idea how to solve this? Thank you again for the help!
