The exam question presents a picture of a cell and asks you how big it is in real life or how much magnification was used to get this image. What do you do? Using this formula (I=AxM).
Image = Actual x Magnification
This is a part of Topic 1.1 in the IB Biology syllabus (2016)

Sir how about that magnification = size of drawing / size of image where you multiply by 2 and 3 method something like that can u explain it to me if you know it? In the exam you get an image of a spider with no measurement of its actual size. so how to do this?
@tropical3005
@tropical3005 9 месяцев назад
u measure the scale bar length and divide it by the scale bar unit it gives and with that answer (you get the magnification) you divide it by the length you measure the spider at. hope this helped

Is the scale bar on the image the actual length of one cell?
@antimatter333
@antimatter333 Год назад
No, the scale is for you to measure with a ruler so it is the image size not the actual length

@@PeterStanley Perhaps due to the fact that this rules cannot apply if you alter the size of what you literally see in the microscope (something unavoidable since you adapt the image to visualize it in your phone or laptop) thus also altering your calculations. In the actual size of the image calculation for example, the "M" remains constant (e.g 400x) but the "I" changes if you visualize fullscreen in an iPhone or in an iPad, doesn´t it?, it doesn´t means that the real, actual size also changes, that is nonsense, it simply means that this rules only apply if the dimensions of what your eye see thorugh the microscope are not altered. That´s why some microscopes have a line already incorporated in the lenses, because it is impractical or even incorrect to measure with a ruler and a photo.
