This is awesome! I do lots of woodworking and I’ve been learning a lot from you about sketchup. Just yesterday I was planning to take measurements of my office and model it in sketchup but looks like I won’t need to!

This is pretty incredible. How accurate have you found these LIDAR measuements to be?

I use Polycam and export to SU as DAE, but without LiDAR, just photogrammetry. I put scale bars and even a tape measure into my scans so I can rescale the model. Polycam has the best rescale feature of all the programs I've tried, including Metashape and Photocatch. So just curious, how accurate is LiDAR, and do you have to rescale at all?
@cekuhnen
@cekuhnen 3 месяца назад
LiDAR is to scale but all LiDAR apps suffer from the same drift issue meaning the bigger the room the higher the chance at the end your walls won’t align bend etc. Truth is the LiDAR tool is very coarse and not really usable It is made for dof finder for photos or place usdz models in AR LiDAR with photogrammetry is what works better LiDAR establishes scale and photogrammetry the percission

Thanks, appreciate the video. Working on defining scope for a couple remodeling jobs, looks like I'll be getting Polycam to assist. Haven't determined if I need to borrow a newer iphone or if I just use photogrammetry with my S23U.

I'd make sure to spot check some areas to make sure it's giving you the level of precision you need. For my purposes it's been great, but if you're looking for laser accuracy to the tenth of an inch, I don't think it'll give you what you need. All depends on your specific use case

Do you think this will be able to cope with landscapes/gardens? Maybe not yet, but I wondered whether they are developing it to handle that kind of work.

Could this be used to model a car interior? I need a cost effective way to 3d scan my car
@MatteoManzi

I am an interior designer and just these days I have to decide whether to get ipad air without Lidar or ipad pro with Lidar. I have seen several videos of Polycam and it looks undoubtedly promising although from an interior design perspective it seems to me that it is still not that reliable with measurements. Am I wrong? Anyway I think I will opt for ipad pro because while it is true that nowadays measurements are still not very accurate with any app, I think they will improve in the future. Ps: I always follow you and you are always a great support to learn and improve.

I am 3d professional and all LiDAR videos and apps are misleading - the accuracy and quality of all LiDAR model apps are terrible. Period. The only app that is Trnio which uses LiDAR together with photogrammetry. At this point I am quite disappointed how people repeat those LiDAR stories - they were proven unusable already a long time ago. App,es room scan api is utter useless - it is fine for IKEA place furniture tricks but not more!

@@cekuhnen may I ask what about scanning the room. getting the skp file and then remeasure, wont that save a lot of time as you can just fix the dimensions as you go along
@tomvallee1768
@tomvallee1768 Год назад
Class is right. An app that does combine ease of use and absolute accuracy is Magic Plan. It too uses LIDAR to map a room and recognizes doors and windows etc. But, it uses bluetooth to link to a laser measure. So, scan first to place everything and then tap the dimension that you want spot on and measure with the laser. You can also drag and drop graphics for doors, cabinets, furniture, etc. And label picture placements. I do Magic Plan and then walk the building with a 3d camera (not the Matter Port camera but the Theta Z) and upload to Matter Port. Then you can walk through the whole building as if you were there. Saves a ton of time.
@cekuhnen
@cekuhnen Год назад
@@tomvallee1768 I never had access to such a tool and thus never really further explored their floor plan apps because they all suffer from the same technical limitation of Apple’s LiDAR sensor. Their pure LiDAR apps are fine to make a quick scan when inaccuracies deformed walls etc are fine but they are utter useless for precise work. Trnio uses LiDAR to establish scale and help with alignment and that data is then further refined with the photogrammetry pipeline producing very detailed and precise meshes.
@cekuhnen
@cekuhnen Год назад
@@chrislangeveldt8859 why not scan it once correctly and then use it as a reference to model over without the need of any extra post measurement verifications? It is all about accelerating and perfecting practical workflows.

I wonder if I can use Polycam with my Q-Link Android phone? Also, is this reasonably priced? The BLK2GO Laser Scanner costs over a thousand dollars, too much for me.

Is this accurate enough for business/client use measurement wise etc.? it looks like its having some issues picking up door holes compared to the surrounding trim etc.

Hi, I did try to import the dae file into SketchUp but I still have a file that resembles more of a cloud point than a real 3D model. Is there a specific setting rather in polycam before scanning or in SketchUp once imported? In your video the import is really a 3D model for me it looks like in the polycam scan in SketchUp.

The problem only is that the results are not precise at all and apples api struggles with architectural details a lot … Even in a basic room drift is present This is fine for coarse work but that’s kinda it

The new Ipad release has a Scan to Design mode that's based on Canvas software I believe - my understanding is that it's more accurate, but I can't speak to how much more accurate it is
@cekuhnen
@cekuhnen 3 месяца назад
@@Thesketchupessentials Problem Canvas faces is the same like all other LiDAR apps - drift and distortions. That paired with SketchUps problem dealing with dense meshes makes this really an odd tool to add. I did some tests (I know Canvas since a long time) but placements for doors windows etc is so inaccurate that I am puzzled about this. Dot3D is kinda the only LiDAR app that fixes some of the drift issues.

I have found Polycam to be pretty awful for measuring interiors. Accuracy is just not there, and their built in plan function is terrible. It's hugely disappointing.
@Thesketchupessentials
@Thesketchupessentials Год назад
What have you found the error factor to be? I don't like measuring off the 3D lidar data because it's kind of lumpy and not super precise, but for "within an inch or two" applications I've found it to be fine
