so you stitch (quilt) a quilt from the back side? and not the top side? (at 3.48) isn't that what you're doing? Thanks in advance for a reply.

Great video! I’m new to sewing and I have a question, I want to make a simple kid blanket with 100% cotton and flannel and I want to add some batting, but should the batting be larger then the fabrics? And if so when I trim of the edges will it start to unravel from sewing all the lines on it, or would I need to back stitch? Thanks
@camillewinkleman5519
@camillewinkleman5519 2 года назад
I’m not an expert but I’m answering from my own experience. Your backing fabric and your batting should be a couple inches larger than your quilt top. Once quilting is done, you would cut off the excess backing and batting and then add a binding all the way around. Hope this was helpful.

Hi there. Can you use fleece as Batting for a Quilt? Please let me know. Thank you.
@FaveQuilts
@FaveQuilts 6 лет назад
Hi Diana! You can use fleece as quilt batting; polar fleece as batting will create a very warm quilt! Since fleece doesn't shrink, if you use it as batting, you may want to pre-wash your quilt top fabrics before cutting and piecing your quilt together. Have a great day!

Do you have to have a special plate or do you have to lower feed dogs? I don't know if I can lower my feed dogs.
@zonawilson6245
@zonawilson6245 6 лет назад
No need to lower the feed dogs for this kind of straight-line quilting. Lowering the feed dogs makes free-motion quilting possible on the home machine.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 6 лет назад
The walking foot works with your feed dogs. The two work as a pair to keep both the top and bottom fabrics of your quilt aligned and moving together. Feed dogs are usually lowered for darning, embroidery and free motion quilting. In those cases, the fabric is moved by the person, not the machine. To learn more about the feed dogs on your particular machine, do a search on line to find the manual, if you do not have one. If your machine, has the option, instructions on how to do it should be in your manual. You can also do a search using keywords like this: Manufacturer Name Model Number Feeddog or Feed Dog Hope this helps.

Why do you quilt so densely? Is it really necessary?
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 6 лет назад
No, it is just a design option. Personally, I don't like it for quilts are are actually going to be used. The batting is compacted too much, thus reducing warmth. Labor intensive, and thread expensive, as well. OK for small projects such as place mats, mug rugs and such.

What is negative space mean.
@FaveQuilts
@FaveQuilts 6 лет назад
Hi Phyllis, negative space in quilting typically refers to the background fabric of your quilt; a lot of quilters add free motion designs to add more detail to the negative space. Have a great day!
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 6 лет назад
Phyllis, negative space is simply empty space. For example, all of the white space on a page in a book is negative space. At times negative space is visually pleasing to avoid a cluttered, too "busy", chaotic appearance. Usually in quilting, it means plain fabric blocks (or areas) without readily apparent designs. Those spaces can be filled with quilting stitches, applique, embroidery, etc. Can be quite beautiful. Can also be the opposite if these techniques are out of harmony with overall pattern of the quilt.
