How To Quit Drinking Alcohol

There is no easy solution to quitting drinking alcohol, but I do hope this video helps. To those that don't understand, quitting drinking sounds simple. But the reality is that for those that struggle with alcohol dependency it is anything but a simple task to stop drinking. I know this and understand the problem well. I live it everyday. Lastly, to anyone that feels upset or offended about what I said about AA, first realize I do think it is a great program and it undoubtedly works, and works well. I have used bits and pieces from the program and am not putting it down in any way. In the last 6 months I have been to 3 meetings, and I wouldn't have attended at all if I didn't think it was a great program.
Thanks for watching and just know if you are having a hard time quitting drinking, just know that the life after quitting drinking is a life worth living.

You rock. I was a beer binge drinker. Never did like hard alcohol. Then I had a heart attack in 2012. Drank a few times after and ended up in the hospital every time I did with my heart going wonkers. That did it for me. A drink isn't worth my life. Anytime I think about it, which is pretty often in the summer, the remembrance of what happens stops me cold. I had a Kalua and cream last winter. Just one. My heart went nuts. Alcohol is not my friend anymore. Great video, and Congrats!

Man, I was a touring drummer for years and a opiate addict. I finally got away from music business altogether after having my first kid 10 years ago, but I still drink and everyone's fine with it because it's socially acceptable and I have a good job, but I decided to search for videos like this today after going to a dentist appointment and not be able to get work done because my blood pressure was 190. I totally agree with you regarding the counting of days. I would always encourage people to not just take it a day at a time but actually a moment at a time, and make sure that moment is in the moment. That it's not a moment dwelling on past mistakes (guilt) or the future (overwhelming). If you can hone in on the art of constantly being in the present moment it is a place you will never touch alcohol again. Forget about the past because it can judge you. Forget about the future because it can worry you. In the present there is no judgement, no hate, no worry or fear. It is all about the peace of "now". I like to think of it a little like one of those flat conveyor belts that you stand on when you're at the airport. You're moving forward but you are stationary. Remain in every moment, and all of those moments become the past the present and the future - your SAFE place where nobody can hurt you. Peace out beautiful souls

Before I'm saying something which might upset you, let me give you some intro: I'm a little over 2 years sober now for the first time in 20 years. I've also been struggling with booze, drinking the same or even more than you on a daily basis. You just sound like me when I've been trying to stay sober before my current attempt. In the past, I've been a so called "dry drunk", basically still the mindset of an alcoholic but fighting the urge. Fighting the urge can work but my life was miserable, always debating with myself why I should or shouldn't drink, keeping myself busy all the time etc. What I've done now differently is working on the reasons WHY I was drinking, in my case it was anxiety and loneliness. Using therapy I can gladly say that I have 0 cravings anymore and a completely new life started. So my advice to myself if I'd relapse: Analyze the situation which led me to grab the drink. Did I feel lonely? Anxious? Depressed? Our mind is or was programmed to use alcohol in such conditions, but we can retrain it. With therapy and lots of mental exercise. All the best!

Yep. You only have to quit for one day. That's how I did it. I was highly motivated by a heart attack too though. Did the AA thing for 30 days. Got my chip. I wasn't impressed though. Bunch of people who just replaced one vice with a few others. They smoke like fiends and drink way too much coffee. And the sob stories. Geeesh. Couldn't handle it man. Got my chip and left. I have no idea where that chip is today. But I still have a few now and again. Mostly when I'm camping and then it's only a few. During my birthday week I only had 9 beers total and that included the four I had on my birthday at the party we had out in Death Valley. I'm good with it. Glad you are OK too Nick. Hang in there. Even the old timers in AA don’t practice the program to perfection. Getting sober doesn’t make us saints, it helps us become grownups. I’ve been to meetings that I would never go back to because they live in the problem, instead of the solution. The beauty of the fellowship, is that you are NOT required to believe in anything, or do anything. Like most things in life, however, if you’re not willing to make the effort, you won’t get much back.
@RippSnortin
@RippSnortin 5 лет назад
You didn't mention how much better sober sex is. I've been to AA meetings, both forced and voluntarily. It's not for me either. Too much dwelling on the past. They said you can't stay sober without them. I haven't had a drink since 1984, so there are exceptions to that rule. But for many its a great program.

@VelcroKittie
@VelcroKittie 5 лет назад
On becoming a non-drinker I always get this image in my head of a load of different types of people standing in a field, where each person is standing in front of a specific door that is unique to them. And on each door there are multiple different locks, different to every other door that that person must work out how to unlock. The one thing in common is that every person is trying to get through the door and away from abuse. Sadly in the non-drinking community there is too much energy spent trying to put down others for the method they have found to unlocking their door. I personally didn't attend A.A because I didn't need to. I found my own way to unlocking the door, but I know for a fact that A.A has helped others. Ultimately it is about getting through that door and away from the sheer horrors of the abuse of alcohol. It is also about falling in love with the sheer beauty of the other side and despising the abuser you escaped from.
@VelcroKittie
@VelcroKittie 5 лет назад
@ two sox Yes that seems to be a reoccurring point made by a lot of people which is why A.A doesn't work for everybody and there should be numerous options available to people who no longer want to drink alcohol. I don't really see the point in lamenting over alcohol as if it's some long lost lover especially coming together in groups to agree on this. As long as that mind set is in place, people will be caught in a terrible cycle of having to rely on their willpower: a will power is a terrible tool for overcoming addiction. The day you see everything directly and indirectly related to alcohol as abusive, destructive and abhorrent is the day you no longer have to use will power. It's a very liberating day when even the thought of alcohol makes you want to puke.

In my country, Australia, we see endless ads on tv about the negatives of smoking, whilst alcohol abuse is just ignored. Smoking is just as damaging to the individual, but alcohol abuse causes far more accidents, violence and social issues to society. The bastards who make and push the stuff have a lot to answer for. They're as bad as drug peddlers in my opinion. Yes its legal......but only because forcing it underground was tried, and failed.

Lost my mother last moth & her partner has regressed. Same drink you mentioned in this. Man has been like a father to me for most of my life. I hate seeing him like this. I've had a problem with junk food in the past. Still get cravings. Dropping an addiction is not an easy think to do so be proud of what you have achieved.

You a so appreciated, you do a great job talking about it. And are probably reaching an important audience, guys who aren’t as young as they once were, but have years to go to drink until their organs are all shutting down, plenty of time to get healthy and clear. I have 7 months and I feel fantastic. Good work you!

Just keep an eye on that and be careful. I'm not saying that this is the case for everybody (or for you for that matter), but for a large majority moderation is procrastinating the inevitable. You either slide back over time or you just have to quit outright. Self honesty is the key. Keep up the good work Shannon!

Thank you! I had about 10 years sober. But being an addict sucks! One slip and it's over. I am fighting for sobriety and it's scary. Trying to get better but afraid because I started back about 3 years ago and know it's dangerous. I have been part of AA and NA and used to enjoy it but I never could quite make a year sober. The last time I got sober I didn't go back but a woman helped me get sober and she is my wife now. I fell off the wagon when my mother died in my arms 3 years ago, at the same time my father had an accident and was in hospital for 6 months. Last year early in January he was diagnosed with a very aggressive type of frontal lobe dementia.. I have taken care of him for the entire time and it got super hard. He was placed in Hospice 2 days ago because I about had a total breakdown. I am determined to quit but no way I can do it overnight. I am going to taper off....even though a rehab would be better. I just can't go right now. I do appreciate you sharing your experience. Thank you, your well spoken and down to earth. Hope I can say I'm sober soon.

Thanks for vid, I did the AA route but then went the way worked for me, Tues Dec 10th was nine years for me. Don’t say this to impress or ego based rather it is all possible however you run your programme and main thing is no alcohol and we get on with our lives. Simply I love being sober and want this more than the other option. Thanks again and respect to you 👍✌️
