Hina Khan-Mukhtar is a married mother of three young men and one of the founders of the homeschooling co-operative known as ILM Tree in Lafayette, California, which now serves over 35 homeschooling families in the East Bay. In addition to teaching Language Arts to elementary, middle, and high school students, she is also involved in interfaith dialogue. Hina was a monthly contributor to The Muslim Observer’s “Raising Our Ummah” column. She also writes for Seeker’s Guidance, where she shares parenting advice and ideas for nurturing spiritual traditions in childhood. Learn more about her at hinakm.com

I read to my children before they were born....afterwards instilled the love of reading, love of libraries, make it a hobby!! Science has shown that reading to your baby in the womb promotes brain activity and can promote early literacy skills and language development. Literacy skills continue to develop while reading to your baby after they are born. Even though a baby is not able to talk, they are learning about the world around them!!!!

Very few people read anything of any substance nowadays. On a cell phone/computer screen, folks generally "flit" through material without really reading it with effort or focus. I was taught to memorize poetry in both English and Urdu while growing up in Pakistan. Truthfully, I hated it as a child (LOL!) because I could hardly understand any of it. But I came to see the beauty behind that form of instruction as an adult when I began to appreciate the great works I was exposed to in my early years.

Please HELP! My kids are already 9 and 7 and they are already habitual screen timers with NO interest in books. Is it too late? How can I reverse this?

It’s never too late. You’re the adult and you will have to be the one to set firm limits on screen time (that includes for yourself as well). Start reading aloud to your children.

What year (of the kid) is best for these techniques? Can we start as early as when they are 2 years old?

Yes, you can start at 2 years old with board books - stick to very little script (repetitive and rhyming patterns are good at this age) and big, bright illustrations.
