I don’t know if you will see this comment or not but I wanted to share with you that my son came running up to let me know about this video as he follows your channel and we are raising our own chickens as well. He was very enthusiastic about your tips and tricks with the cardboard underneath the waterer 😆 yup we haven’t done that before and never knew to do it either so I’m thankful he showed this to me! Guess my young lad just gained you a subscriber from up here in Ont. Canada🇨🇦🌻 take care y’all!

You would of enjoyed baby chick's day on our farm where we would get 45,000 at a time. Our meat birds were on a 8 week rotation, they would be sold as fryers averaging 5 to 6 pounds. Then the dirty job came of cleaning, disinfecting, sweeping and then covering the clean floor with pine sawdust or Shavings. Very rewarding. Ron Fayette, Maine. 🐣🐣🐣🐤🐥🐔🐔👌

Good solid advice. One thing we like to use is a ratchet strap for the heat lamp. Each couple days we just ratchet it up little by little. Makes adjusting heat temp super easy. I like your idea of using the Irwin grip, I never thought of that. Good stuff friend 👍

Love the video and simplicity of it. I miss having chicks, baby rabbits, pigeons... Rats keep wreaking havoc, it doesn't matter how much I seal the cages, they always find the way in and I always wanted my animals to have space and run around in the garden. I tried traps and poison, it works for few of them but doesn't exterminate them even a number of cats in the neighborhood can do nothing about them. I heard stories about small cats and puppies were eaten by rats.

We start raising chicks next week. We have a fully enclosed 15x30 coop that has electricity and live in Western NY. We were going to put the brooder in our basement (with the heat lamp) but it's only 60 in our basement. Would it be better to put the broader in the coop with the heat lamp instead since it's warmer in there?? It's about 80-90 during the days and 60-70 at night.

Could you please do a video on different chick sickness I am new to keeping chicken this year being my first and I got three chicks three days ago they have an air sack under their neck and it growing I dont think it's normal but I can't get it to a vet till Monday I can't find any vidio on it or if it has a name to the sickness of if it going to infect any more birds if I get some just be nice love watching your videos!
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 3 года назад
That's the first chamber of the chickens stomach....usually refered to as the "Craw"...it's not an air sac..it means your chicks are eating. Don't waste your money taking a darn chicken to the vet...they aren't pets and they aren't dogs...face the reality that it's normal to have a few chicks die. Don't buy 3 chicks...buy 10 chicks because you're gonna have some losses. That's why you can't find a video on it...because it's totally normal Peggy. Remember, this is poultry...not kittens....you shouldn't handle them alot and you should expect that some will not make it. I know...it sucks...but it's the reality of owning chickens. I don't know of any chicken that ever died of "old age"....google search a chickens digestive system diagram. You'll learn...remember..they don't have teeth..they have a gizzard that chews for them...do some research on chickens...it's not an infection..it's just food

You've got a sawmill, you're making your own sawdust. I believe I mentioned not long ago about putting a tarp down to catch your sawdust. If you are going to cut cedar, change the tarp. Then you won't have to spend money buying sawdust.
@volvo09
@volvo09 3 года назад
Not sure sawdust is a good thing for animals, especially babys. It's way too fluffy, fine, and airborne. I'm sure there's uses, but I wouldn't use it as bedding...

First time chicken tender of 9 chics here, how y'all doing? I have the heat lamp installed in my DIY chicken coop, I have 1 question.. actually 2 questions but 1 kind of leads up to the second question. My lamp is sitting over 23 inches, roughly 2 feet above the pine shavings in the 3'x3.5' laying box and 10" from the pvc roof. I have the 5 quart waterer with the rocks inside the tray sitting in the far corner and the 5 quart feeder sitting in the other far corner. Is that okay? I don't want a coop fire or the roof melting at all. I live in Waynesboro, MS and the temperature during the day is much hotter than your weather there in NC. Do I have to keep the heat lamp on 24/7?
@MayFamilyEmail
@MayFamilyEmail 3 года назад
Let me reiterate, from personal experience........ BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THE HEAT LAMP SET-UP. Make sure it is secure and even then, make sure there is a secondary attachment. One night, after a long day, I cleaned out the chicks box and forgot to re-secure the secondary bungee and smelt smoke billowing out of the back porch after the heat lamp fell into the wood shavings. We caught it just in time and all the chicks survived, but they are a fire hazard (I do still use the heat lamp, but have been buying the warmer plates you showed).
