Aww, how really good and confident and good man you are! With all those little baby chicks! I am a worrier, so I would be a nervous wreck, doing this. Always wanted to bring up fluffsters and did look after them for a few weeks on a Welsh farm, as a child, however, they all had me exhausted! And wanted attention, all the time, intense. I never lost one, but was exhausted and they go very jumpy and leggies grew very quickly. So juggling and hand yo eye co ordination, is extremrly imperative! They love baby wotms too after a few days, so it is not for the squeamish of wriggly worm forroging ppl xxxx

I'm a vegetarian and recently I watched a video showing how certain supermarket chains treat the animals they farm (specifically chicks). Or at least how an extension of them treats them very badly. For the sake of profit. Broke my heart. Can't eat eggs anymore. Until I farm them just like this. How much care and consideration; it was a pleasure to watch.
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer 2 года назад
Great comment...now hear me out a bit.... let's look at the reality. Supermarkets don't raise chickens....chicken companies raise chickens and sell to supermarkets. There are a million different videos out there depicting the horror of cruel animal handling practice....these are agenda based documentaries meant to discust us into thinking that all chicken operation are horrible and cruel....I assure you they are not. You should see my video on how a hatchery works and how a commercial chicken house works...it's pretty amazing and not cruel at all. I'm glad ya enjoyed the video...I care deeply for my animals for sure. They live the best life possible with one bad moment...we should all be so blessed

My Dad bought chicks every year at Easter. I took care of the chicks. My Dad built a coop outside that had a cover on it. It was a stationary coop. After they got out there dad cleaned and put new straw out and meal worms and I fed them sratche food and oyster shells when they were able to start laying. I loved that job. My first school skirts were Chicken Feed sacks, they used to use material for the bags of feed.

It also helps if you put place a cardboard or two under your food and waterer to avoid food and bedding from getting into them. My grandma and grandpa had a regular brooder house for all the chicks when they first came (in Wisconsin) with a door that opened to the outside where they had put up snow fence to allow the chicks outside when old enough, but too young to join the regular flock. I used large marbles in my waterers to keep the little one from drowning. Have had chickens, guineas, turkeys, ducks, geese and even a 1993 Great Flood Rescue pair of Pheasants from a family in the Mo Bottoms area between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. The kids were in 4-H back then and my son had the Grand Champion Market Bird Champion that year! Been involved with the birds since I was 1.5 years old with my Grandma and still have them today 66 years later!

I'm new to this and I recently bought 150 chicks🤦🏾 and when they got delivered I realised I had grossly underestimated the space they would occupy and had to improvise a hatchery for them where I put all of them... It's been 3 rough days since I noticed they are climbing on top of each other and nearly killing some(I've already lost 4😢) so I've been spending an unhealthy amount of time with them making sure more don't die(I've slept for like a total of 7hrs in those 3 days😅)... I've also been researching trying to learn more and now I'm thinking of separating them or something but I haven't quite figured it out yet. Thank for the video. God bless you
@StoneyRidgeFarmer
@StoneyRidgeFarmer Час назад
go buy another brooder .....it's not that complicated.....split the flock into 2 brooders. Give them the space they need.....and you didn't improvise a hatchery....you're setting up a brooder...please go spend the money to outfit the chicks appropriately...losing 4 out of 150 isn't abnormal at all...it's completely normal to lose 5% -10%

From what I have learned and heard is, if your birds start to become aggressive to one another, you can simply change to a red light. I know the experiment was done with turkeys, but I would think it would also work for chicks too

Now your getting into an are I am experienced in, raising laying hens. We only bought peeps once and remember getting a mix of males and females. We got less than 10% rosters which we ate after 6 months. We got a roster from a friend and my grandfather gave us an old brood hen so we hatched and raised our own hens after that. After the hens quit laying, they ended up as Sunday diner.

So the Silkie actually keeps the fuzz forever. Look one up, they're unreal. I have a black one as a house pet. I wish she still peeped, but she makes some other wicked cute noises & i know what every one means. 🖤 Oh yeah, silkies are super small too compared to other chickens!! So they have kinda what you're looking for!!

@@venomg5799 yes, i have seen silkies in other videos :) they are so cute! and so are dwarf chickens. the roosters have all the cool long tail feathers and those red flaps on their heads, but they are so short and small

Orphingtons or Black Astralorps are very friendly. They are also very sturdy and great foragers. I have heard stories of people holding chicks close to their faces and getting pecked in the eye. Don't do that. Lol. Have fun.

@@StoneyRidgeFarmer that's not true in our situation at all. All our chickens love being handled. Even the ones we didn't raise from chicks.
