I've known for a few years I'm far too low, but cannot bring myself to increase. Especially with the girls bringing in all the pinterest & IG photos. I've spent up to 5 hours and many supplies/product and only charge $120. I'm ashamed and i hate myself every time I do it. You think that'd be motivation enough, but I'm stuck. I love that you made this video. I'll keep rewatching it. I need to make a change. I'm miserable.
I am going to raise my prices I have a couple of clients that I started doing after the covid shutdown so Time hey are you full highlight, and a trim on short hair and charge 145 the only problem is I have a few people like that and they come in with free written checks and just hand them over to me at the end of the service without asking if I raise my prices, so I’m gonna get a flyer put a price menu on my station. I work in a salon with four chair rentals and two of the girls charge about $20 more than I do and hairdressing is a hard job on your body and your mind because you have to be healthy and strong. Mentally pick up on their energy and sometimes they come in with bad energy and it actually stays with me for several hours. Maybe I’m very sensitive. I’m not sure, but I am not sure what to do.
It really does come down to both pricing strategy, AND approach + mindset. I just did a video on this as well because there's so much involved in that decision, it can be so intimidating. I believe first and foremost the mindset shift here is crucial. Great video!
Thanks so much! I think you have created a wonderful resource for stylists at any point in their career. I appreciate your personality and your time and how graciously you share your experiences and expertise. Much love to you and yours.
I am 3 months out of school. I don't even know my worth yet, because I don't even have the experience to feel confident in what I'm doing. I just kind of go with it for now. I give my close friends/family a little break because they are literally the only people coming to me so far. I will definitely be able to use this info for when I am a little more seasoned. Thank you!
Wow you really broke it down. A lot of these things I always think about but you made me aware of some new ways to look at it. I think that you shouldn't compare your prices to other people's, but you should definitely take into consideration your region and market. I am in NYC and I only do private clients, mostly one at a time unless its several friends or relatives, so I take those both into consideration. And in NYC everything is more, rent, food, travel supplies etc. I think that stylists often forget but not only are we service providers, but we are salespeople and advertisers for ourselves and our services. And for that we do have to explain why we offer them value at the prices we charge. Great video with excellent advice :-)
I just discovered your channel and I want to thank-you sincerely for posting. your tutorials are educational, but your attitude and advice are inspirational!......and you're adorable.
Thank you Jaimie. You are definitely my favorite hairstylist-tuber. Lol sharing amazing information, I am a new hair stylist literally new. And is hard juts to think, how to even set prices . I am definitely sharing your videos and follow your advices.. can you make a video about the new regulations, business license, how important is to have a liability insurance etc etc.
Questions!!🙋♀️ •What are good starting prices for someone who is starting out in this industry? •What are good product/ color lines to start out with for: - natural colors -toners -fantasy / pastel colors
Wella Profesional and Sassoon for education, price wise, get a job at the best salon possible for your circumstances and use their prices while you learn, don't be afraid to move on if you want more money and you think you deserve a raise because you are totally improved. Good luck!
Jamie Dana I recently graduate from cosmetology school and in the process of getting licensed. And have a booth rent job lined up. At school we used only Redken which i know pretty well. I see many people use on their formulas so that’s good. But would like to explore more color lines and other docolorizers.
A continued education vid would b helpfull as well! Like what classes r good, how much is to much to pay for, online ones-r they worth it, worth to pay for? How often? Free ones? How to find them good classes? The ins n outs
Jamie i raised mine in Sept i just put a sign up telling clients in advance . Most of them didnt mind one bit and even said I was correct to as opened 5 yrs and everything has so gone up in Ireland! We are worth it and everything u said is correct about jobs now compared to before much more complicated . I put a notice up in salon few weeks in advance and so they were informed which is better . Also here tax has just gone up in out trade so ideal time to do it they even expected it . Thanks Jamie great video love ur hair as always x
I know I’m undercharging. I started with a lower price point because I had taken a long break from doing hair but now I have built up my portfolio & taken classes. I have had clients tell me I undercharge. I needed this video!
Excellent points. As a salon owner I raise my prices every year. And if a client is unhappy I just tell them; should you not get a pay raise at your job ?? Once you turn the table on them they tend to be more understanding:-)
I thinking must have Alot of energy I’m 61 now been doing hair. For 40 years when I was in my forties I worked 50 plus hours too I did that last year too to get ahead need up sick and loss 2 months of money being divorced and single it was very difficult financially, so I think it’s good to take care of your health and not get burned out and frustrated because it could be a setback like it did for me I think charging more will make your job more pleasant because you will not be resentful for charging too little on clients that expect Ask the prices from five years ago or even 10 years ago
Hey! This video has been so helpful, thank you! I was trying to see the pricing letter you linked but its not available? Is there a way to see this? I have been LOSING money with color retouch and need to raise those prices asap lol
Thank you!!! This has been on my mind a lot lately but just like you said...I got scared! Definitely feel much better now. I'm having trouble finding the note you posted to see how you went about it. Thanks again!!!
Have recently subscribed and soooo glad that I did! You are absolutely amazing Jamie - so refreshing to see stylists of your caliber having such a warm and down to earth character. It is so helpful when you explain what levels and tones of color that you use. I felt that you were talking straight to me in this video, couldn't quite believe how it impacted me. You re affirmed my worth! (by the way - what color have you used on your hair, it's absolutely stunning) You're an absolute star :-))))))))!!
This is video is an inspiration. Keep up the good work encouraging stylist to know our worth. Something I preach to others but really haven’t taken my own advice. Love the letter I will be using that. Thank you
Your brilliant Thanks for taking my mind off everything! Bringing peace in my life by watching some one on u tube that actually knows her shi......t What a pleasure Your beautiful
The Doctor raises his prices with no problem so should we. If you explain your education costs, supplies and over head costs have gone up people understand. I think when stylists are trying to get rich off clients is when they leave.
I love your videos like these sooooo much! 💖 Keep it up🤩 Could u map out for me exactly how you break down what u charge for foils? How do u figure it out so the cost of your supplies gets covered plus your hourly wage? Is there a formula u follow? I’m a salon owner and struggle with this so much! I live in a tiny town.
I use Goldwell. And for a Full head of foils, toner cut and blowdry and style and i will spend time on them i charge £55! And for a Balayage or Ombre i charge the same! My boss takes 40% of my earnings for stock and chair. Ive tried switching salons but had dodgey experiences- i have such big goals. I want to learn and thrive! But until I drive i won't get the option too. And i dont earn enough to do my driving. Catch 22 much!!
So good help full tips for me because I just started my Bussines as hair dresser thank you for this beautiful suggestion and I love your all the video and you have put lots of effort in that best of luck
Wow! This was amazing! I’ve been freaking out over raising prices and my boyfriend gives me crap all the time😂. I NEEDED to hear this. Thank you so much for all your resources. ❤️❤️❤️ such a well said letter!
I am a makeup artist and some people who reach out to me dont care that Im going to cosmo school to become a true licensed professional, have professional lighting, chair and constantly upgrading my makeup kit..
Thank you so much for this.. such great tips 😊 question.. when figuring out what you would like to make hourly are you also calculating in what they will most likely rip as well? TIA❤
Hey Jamie: How often do you think stylists should make a price increase? And typically what percentage (or dollar amount) increase do you think is acceptable?
Oof. Yeah. You said $150 balayage and I almost screamed. I charge $85. But I’m moving from booth rent with a bunch of girls who undercharged to a high end commission salon. I’m so happy to do it.
I've been in the business for 32 years, I recently relocated where nobody knows my expertises, how do I go about building a new clientele? I'm going to so many new classes and updating myself however Ive only got 15 clients lol...( I used to have a few hundred) From California to Tennessee clientele is really different. any suggestions? I'm not too worried about pricing because I have a whole fresh start , still this was so helpful I really appreciate your help.
Hi! I want to offer your gift boxes to my clients! I’m not good at bing creative with packaging/presentation, so, thank you! I do want o know where you got the decorative strings, tags and white cards to display the hair ties? Thank you!
My date: January 1st! And some extra days in December which I will work... because I’m booked until January, and even have some appts in January 😂 I dont make appts (usually) more than 1 month ahead..
Price totally depends on demand and your area! If you have questions about your pricing, I would compare to other stylists in your area and demand and go from there!
I would love to see a video for stylists who are just starting out and what we should charge. I live in a small town and most salons here charge super low. There is one higher end salon that charges a bit more (not much though). For example, a lot of salons charge $45-60 for a full foil. The problem is a lot of stylists here are still stuck 10 years in the past and not up to date with new trends. I feel like my work is worth way more than $45 for a full foil but I also feel like people in my town won’t come to me with higher prices, especially since I’m fresh out of school.
I'll keep this in mind for a future video however you can still totally use this formula to help you find what you should be charging. Thanks for watching!
I haven't raised my prices for a long time. What used to take me 2.5 hours is now taking me 4 hours with a whole bunch more product as well. I hate to admit this, but I feel like to get my moneys worth I find myself rushing just to get that 25$ a hour I was hoping for. If I charged more, I would feel like I could take my time and get a better result.
I’m all about charging more based on education and product cost and usage. But there is no way a service should be more expensive because it takes the stylist longer to do. The client will catch on fast. Also forget about these hourly rate stylists. 20 year licenses stylist here.
Can I ask what u charge? I thought about charging by the hour but sometimes coloring short hair takes me just as long as long hair and I think clients expect short hair to be cheaper. So I feel guilty charging for short hair what I would charge for long hair. Also just wondering if u have a set haircut prices or do u charge for those according to the time it takes like u would color? Great vid!👍🏻
Hi Jamie, im from argentina, i follow you, can you put in your videos some subtitles, it cost me understand but it really need it that information! thanks for your videos!
I work at a Smartstyle so we have set base prices and it depends on the stylist regarding how much different color services cost. This was an awesome video! I always get super anxious trying to discuss pricing with clients because I get worried about them just not wanting anything because of prices. 😣😣
If the owner raises the price and your commission is a percentage of the service YES the stylist gets paid more. If you’re at 50/50 commission and your price of a hair cut goes from $20 to $30 then that stylist makes $5 more on that service. Which for a haircut is basically a $5 an hour raise (if you hustle anyway). Which is fantastic.
To put $5 into perspective $5x40 hours= 200 extra per week. Say you want to take some vacation so you only work 50weeks if the year. That’s an extra $10,000 a year. Small raises in prices make a huuuuge difference for both the owner and the stylist.
