This video shows a detailed overview of what goes into installing our leather upholstery kit into a 1985-1993 BMW E30 3 Series Convertible. We hope this behind-the-scenes upholstery ASMR video inspires the upholsterer in you or helps you appreciate the work that goes into this craft. We love making videos like this to show off the commonly overlooked art form of automotive upholstery. Whether it's a custom one-off interior or a simple OEM-like replacement, a lot of blood, sweat, and tears go into making it look like new.
We offer installation services for local customers in the Oklahoma City area. However, we do ship our ready-to-install leather upholstery kits all over the country straight to your door. Customers can do the installation themselves or take it to a local auto upholstery shop for professional installation. We have an ever-growing network of trusted installers nationwide that we would love to connect you with if needed. Hate the headrest guides with the plastic washer/ Christmas tree profile, they brake if you dont heat the crap out of them(and still sometimes do). The older CSI has to have them inserted in perfectly or it distorts the leather and if they brake your screwed. Ive always been curious why aftermarket manufacturers dont cut the headrest holes? To me it would be easier/ faster to have the cut patterned in but maybe im missing something? Great install!

Thanks for the comment! Great point on the plastic washers. Old plastic parts are more at risk of breaking, and we find that it can help to pre-steam the plastics to soften them, but as you said, sometimes it's unavoidable. We don't pre-cut most headrest post holes since it takes away the installer's ability to choose the final positioning of the cover before installing, and it really doesn't add much time or difficulty for the installer to cut them. Many times, with older seats where the foam has developed "character," it is difficult to predict where the new holes will actually sit. You may need to manipulate a cover one way or another to get optimal final fitment, and pre-cutting a hole takes away that flexibility.

I'm about to tackle this job on my E30 and I have a couple of questions: 1) What was that black backing you applied to the foam. It appeared as if it was meant to give it some strength? 2) I noticed you using the steamer on the edges of the foam. Is that to bring back the original shape? Do you have to wait for the foam to dry before continuing? I noticed you did it on the inside of the headrest cover as well, what's the theory behind that? Thank you!

Hello! The black material was an automotive-style jute carpet that we used as a backing between the foam and the seat frame, which helps keep the seat frame from rubbing in to the foam over time and gives the foam more structural rigidity. The steam was used to bring the foam back to its original shape and to make the new leather more soft, flexible, and pliable during the installation. The foam doesn't get wet enough from steaming to require dry-time before installing the upholstery.

nice! im guessing its used a stiffer/permanent adhesive for foam restructuring? I would've never thought to fix that part of the seat upon reassembly

Great job! What an overly complicated mess BMW designed for those seats.

Agreed, this is definitely one of the more engineered seats that we've worked with. Thanks for watching!
