Great update and thanks for the details on cementing the stone together and water changes; extremely useful. Now I just need to work out how to get the some into even(ish) widths so I've got a chance of laying something that looks half as lovely as your stone work! ;). Great video as always (actually getting better each time) and can't wait till the next one :)

Great build, loving the attention to detail and the stonework, subscribed and liked. I've just finished a pond build myself which you can see on my channel lol. Cheers, Richard.

liked,subbed,and bell noticed as an amatuer pond builder (many years ago) was told cement/lime was a big no no ? when i did mine i used carpet underlay on both sides to put the rocks on the liner/underlay wall and planted ''mind your on business'' in between the rocks and as that grew i removed the rocks... keep up posting your work ,really enjoying your great vids

Thanks for your kind words! Cement and the associated lime can indeed be a major issue for aquatic life- however it (reasonably) quickly leaches out into the pond water and so can be flushed through during a few water changes and after a season or two there are no ill effects whatsoever and the natural acidification that occurs from the introduction of livestock, plants, accumulations of silt etc combat any form of buffering that may occur from the rock/cement. Your pond sounds lovely! Cheers, Ed

This video is amazing! I was trying to figure out how to hide the liner on a small wildlife pond. I’d love to see a video just on building planting pockets

Thank you! Many of my videos divulge a little further into creating marginal planting zones-but I may well do a video focusing on this one day! Best, Ed

Thank you very much, I love it. Isn't any type of substrate necessary in the riverside area? Is gravel enough? Thanks.

Hi there! Thanks for watching and for your kind words! Gravel is just fine for any planting areas and over the years I’ve seen plants flourish in all ponds I’ve built this way! Best, Ed

What is the dept from ground do you start your shelf typically?
@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics 12 дней назад
Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting! In general I like to ensure at least 6” of rock is submerged, but no more then 12” so digging the edging rock shelf between 6”/12” below maximum water level is what i’d aim for. Note I said water level and not ground level- you’ll need to decide what maximum water level you want to achieve and work all levels from this. Hope that helps! Best, Ed

What mix of cement do you use for connecting the stones together?

Hi there! I get asked that a lot-so made a special effort to explain this in the video....I challenge you to watch it all and you’ll get your answer! Best, Ed

Hi fella, I've already got a koi pond 30+ yrs old , however I've just done a DIY filter and waterfall (thanks to my 7yr old daughter's design 😊) but there's a but !?, What's your views/thoughts on pond substrate ? Good idea or not , asking because we only ever had liner , and was thinking of having a substrate to increase bio population and viewing potential of the fish ? What's your thoughts 👍
@CrystalClearAquatics
@CrystalClearAquatics 3 года назад
Hi there, thanks for your question. In general -and especially with koi keeping- I wouldn’t usually recommend any form of substrate on the base of your pond. What may look lovely initially can quickly become a silt/debris trap and end up covered in a layer of silt. This in turn clouds and muddies the water as the koi naturally feed and rummage around in the substrate at the bottom. Cleaning out ponds with a layer of substrate is a bit of a nightmare as well!! The use of a pond vac is made much harder, so in my opinion the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. However- pond keeping and design should be a personal choice and if we’re talking purely aesthetics then a pond that’s entirely gravelled looks lovely when clean! But to maintain clean substrate you will need lots of water jets and circulation and a very efficient filtration system, plus regular cleaning to keep it looking this way! Hope that helps! Best, Ed

Where do you source your stone from?
@CrystalClearAquatics

A frequently asked question!! I tend to use a local supplier to me called Lindsey Clark brothers, based in churt, surrey. I also use Horsham stone, based in broadbridge heath, West Sussex. Best, Ed
