This is a pretty decent guide. One important thing you missed was wiping down the surfaces with methylated spirits or cellulose thinners. Getting any grease of smooth metal is really important. Also, lots of people use all in one paint/primers and thats completely fine but if you want it to last, not just look good, you need to build up the thickness of the paint, this decreases the amount of moisture and oxygen that gets through the paint film to the metal in order to start rust. You can also use a primer high in zinc if you want to increase the time untill repaint. A couple of coats of rust inhibiting paint/primer is a good basic spec, if you want a long lasting system then it would be zinc primer, two coats of micaceous iron oxide and one of of metal gloss...that should last 15 years or so. Also wire brushes are probably better on your angle grinder than sand paper.
I think u did a great job. Though I'm worried of over spray and would of used cardboard, drop clothes and a bunch to cover up the door, deck and surrounding areas.
Yeah..I laughed at the paper job you did there too. Why not have just used a painter's drop cloth? So much easier and faster. Just cut to size if you have to.
My iron handrail is inside. Not as rusty but the paint is thick and chipping off in certain areas. It has white paint globs spotted throughout. And it is over carpet. After your vid, I will try a solvent to remove the paint and get the sandpaper for the rust. I hope I can find a liquid paint To use as well instead of spray paint. I'm planning on carrying out an eagle project on refinishing a set of stairs that looks similar to this one. Do you have any recommendations on angle grinders that I can buy that will be cost effective as I am trying to buy multiple for other people who will be working on the project? Also do you have any recommendations on flap discs that will be compatible for the angle grinder? Thanks.
Did you have to sand the whole thing? It looks like you only sanded the major rust stains. Also, as others have said, did the paint hold up without a topcoat/waterproofing?
Are saying flat disc or floppy disc as it is a flexible sandpaper type disc. I have several of these 4.5" grinder's,sanders. But they are not flexible. So I'm curious what you mean. Thanks David
Great question. Without seeing if, it’s hard to recommend a course of action. But generally to bend metal without risk of it breaking, you need heat. Lots of heat. How bad is it?
@@longfeijiang2449 I decided NOT to use clear coat because hard to use. Instead, used High Gloss Black by Rustoleum and it looks beautiful. As long as you used a good primer first (two coats), then you can go directly to High Gloss Black by the Rustoleum and it really looks nice and is very protected.
after 2 years may be off topic...But wire brushes hand held or on a drill will do very little on stuborn old paint. Even paint striper is not easy job.
