Ask This Old House painter Mauro Henrique teaches a homeowner how to re-stain her mahogany deck

Time: 4-6 hours
Cost: $200
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Re-Staining a Deck:
Palm sander [amzn.to/31IWi34]
Floor sander [amzn.to/31FP4MV]
Paintbrush [amzn.to/2KWlvAU]
Buckets [amzn.to/31FTJP9]
Shopping List:
40/60/80 grit sandpaper [amzn.to/2IoLEqc]
Penetrating wood oil [amzn.to/2XgJTUw]
Lamb’s wool applicator [amzn.to/2KYDUNB]
Paint tray [amzn.to/2KosO4Z]
Steps:
1. Clean all debris off the deck with a leaf blower.
2. Start by sanding the edges of the deck with 40 grit sandpaper.
3. Switch to the floor sander to sand the rest of the deck, again using the 40 grit sandpaper.
4. Repeat this process with the 60 and 80 grit sandpaper.
5. Pour the penetrating oil into a bucket. Apply the oil around the edges of the deck using a paintbrush.
6. Pour some of the penetrating oil into the paint tray. Using the lamb’s wool applicator, apply the stain to the rest of the deck using long strokes. Apply a generous coat but make sure it gets spread well.
7. Allow the first coat to dry and then apply a second coat after 24 hours.
8. The following year after applying a new stain, clean off the deck and apply another coat of the stain to the deck.
9. Reapply the stain to the deck every two years to maintain its finish.
Resources:
To properly re-stain a deck, Mauro explains that the surface needs to be completely sanded down before accepting new stain. To make the job easier, Mauro suggests renting a floor sander from a home center for the day. They will provide you with the correct sandpaper and a set of instructions to ensure you have everything you need to properly sand down the deck.
For the stain, Mauro applied a transparent penetrating wood oil in a natural finish manufactured by PPG [amzn.to/2XgJTUw]. This stain can be found at most home centers.
The other tools Mauro used to apply the stain, including the paintbrushes, extension pole and the lambs wool applicator pad, can also be found at home centers.
Expert assistance with this segment was provided by Mauro’s Painting (www.maurospainting.com).

Never power wash a deck or a fence. All it does is mar the wood. I learned that from T.O.H. magazine almost 20 years ago. I started refinishing decks back in 1990 and I've never power washed a single one. Deck washing solution and a garden hose is all you need to clean one for a simple refinish.
@Fe7Ace
@Fe7Ace 5 лет назад
Yeah I wouldn't use a power washer on any porous surface it will force into it, they are surprisingly destructive. I was a bit absent-minded with where one of my hands were when using one once and just tipped the side of my finger in the jet, carved a furrow in the side of my finger like it was nothing.

Depends greatly on what timber you use and how you control the pressure washer. Australian hardwoods are power washed routinely to no ill effect. Can understand if you only work with softwoods and/or so called hardwoods that are really soft by world standards.

a floor drum sander works so much better than those types of sanders... much faster and less work, and provides a much better finish at the end
@chrisgraham2904
@chrisgraham2904 4 года назад
A drum sander is faster and more aggressive intended for removing polyurethane from hardwoods like oak. Without professional experience a homeowner could gouge and create surface valleys destroying a soft wood like mahogany very easily. A vibrating orbital sander is a better choice for a novice DIY'er. cheaper to rent and cheaper sanding pads.

Bobby Sledge pressure wash and stain it
@shawnr771
@shawnr771 5 лет назад
As you power wash. Do this in sections Spray a good amount of 50/50 water and bleach onto the fence. One or two sections at a time. Let it soak in for about 5 minutes and then power wash. The bleach water mix will help release the old stain and make the surface more uniform. Then stain following the directions of the material in question.
@HonuManHi
@HonuManHi 5 лет назад
I have read that bleach is not good for this purpose. It caused the grain to separate and weakens the integrity of the wood. I had a friend who once spilled bleach on her deck, and no matter of cleaning could get it back to it's former glory. It wound up rotting, and she simply had a large section of the deck replaced.
@shawnr771
@shawnr771 5 лет назад
@@HonuManHi I have used the method as I have described for over twenty years on fencing and decks with no side effects of sudden wood deterioration whatsoever. The bleach is not left on to soak into the wood for an extended period of time. It kills any mold or fungus that is slightly subsurface on the wood. The bleach is removed almost immediately. The miniscule amount of diluted bleach being used is not in comparison to straight bleach being spilled on your friend's deck. For informational purposes Question how long did it take before the deck failed? One week, one month, one year?

We are debating whether we should use Oil-based products or water-based stain-sealants. Mold eats Oil-based products. And, even on the clapwall with mold-killing primer could not stop the mold to surface to water-based stains within a year or two. Algae is also prevalent all over New England. And, this video says No thorough cleaning with a deck cleaner or a stripper, with a pressure washer but apply with water with a garden hose to clean it a year after this? Tell us more realistic solutions than executing what comes in the head first.

@louofm1
@louofm1 2 месяца назад
I'm in Michigan and.built my wood deck about 5 years ago. I made sure to use a penetrating timber oil based (not water base), in a natural finish.. you have to be careful because some so called stains (especially the solid colors) are more like a paint and will flake, thus causing a mess. I believe that using an oil based stain in a natural or semi transparent finish is best, especially in harsher conditions. I think I have about one more season before I'll sand and re-stain, with an oil based finish again.
