Great introductory lesson into a Depth Finder. You covered a lot of the basics and you have got to be one of the best teachers of fishing in general that I have ever seen. Bill Dance does a great job teaching people how to fish and as far as I am concerned you are just as good as Bill or better in some instances. Since it has been 5+ years since you have done this particular video it may be time for a refresher on Depth Finders and how they work to help us find fish. I know you are starting a series on "Beginning Fishing" and that is awesome and please don't stop. Just a suggestion from a fellow fisherman that really enjoys watching your videos and learning how to Bass fish even better. Something that Bill Dance does a lot that I feel helps teach those of us that can't picture things under water well is diagrams or illustrations that help depict better what you might be teaching. For Example how to fish a crank bait across a point and what your boat position is in relation to the point. The illustrations that they used to have in the Bassmaster Magazines back in the early 90's to help show how baits move through cover and such. Just suggestions and you are doing a fantastic job!!!

Knowing little about how to read my 346c DI, I learned a lot here...my lake is soft bottomed with a maximum depth of 11ft so the points made will help me understand my lake better when the ice disappears.Thanks!

I started fishing for bass in local ponds about 4 years ago. Just walking the bank and honing my skills. 2 summers ago I purchased a Jon boat and started going out on my local lake. It gave me access to a lot more water, but I still find myself mostly fishing shallow water and up and down the banks. Ive decided my next purchase is going to be a fish finder so I can finally learn whats off shore and hone my skills in deeper water. Thank you for the tips. Should be a fun summer trying to figure this out for myself.

Take your time. I fished from the bank for 12 years before I got my first boat. (10ft jon boat) Plus a boat is just a hole in the lake you toss your money into. The bigger the boat the bigger the hole.

Hi there! First time watching your videos! I will watch more!!! This was very informative, I bought a boat.. First one! And it came with an Eagle Fish Finder. First time using a finder. No manual (of course)... The transducer is located on the back of the boat... And well, I kept fishing behind the boat. Thinking that's where it was aimed! Hahaha! Now I know... I will watch more videos thanks for posting!

Depth finders have always been a mystery to me. I'm thinking about getting the Humminbird Fishin' Buddy as a starter to put on my Sevylor HF360. I like that it has the side view. I think it'll help me find fish in the shallower waters & Humminbird is well known for their great customer service. Haven't been fishing in a loooong while. I want my boy to love it as much as I do so I want to get good at it again before he is old enough to start fishing. Thanks for the great in depth vid! (badomdom)

Another excellent video! I was wondering if in future videos you could incorporate more fish finder tips. For example, I believe in one of your videos you talked about being on a shallower hump or possibly you were shallow and it become much deeper quickly. Would it be possible to point these features out while you're fishing? Thank you so much!

A distinct layer in a large body of water, in which temperature changes more rapidly with depth than it does in the layers above or below. This occurs in the summer. This layer will have more dissolved oxygen and it will be the depth were most of the fish in the lake will be holding at.

I'm looking for my first fish finder on my jon boat. Right now I'm looking at the Lowrance Mark-4 with the color DSI which is running about $200. Is the DSI worth the extra money compared to a garmin or humminbird that is gray scale 5" screen with dual beam and sonar running about $140s. Just wondering if the DSI makes a big difference in looking for structure in a lake. Trying to not spend over $200 on a unit so the Lowrance is about as high as I'm willing to go.

I can't think of a way to teach that. Those skill come with just doing them. Every person does it different. So it boils down to whatever works for you. I might be able to do one on boat position but that's something that I'm still working on myself.

@jeffreykeck267
@jeffreykeck267 9 лет назад
Question on Thermocline. I'll ask this as clearly as I can, maybe give a couple examples of my question. Say you find thermocline at 15 ft depth, where do you start looking for fish. I know so much depends on conditions & time of year but what makes you start in certain places? Examples: (main lake point/flat that is 15' to bottom), (water that has structure 15' deep but any depth to bottom), or do you find the thermocline that is near any type of structure (bridge, rip/rap, ledges) near it so fish can stay near thermocline but move to these places to feed & return? Hope that came out ok cause it is a very confusing process trying to put together a good game plan. I love the videos, very instructive & easy to take your advice straight to the water. Thanks alot.
@Flukemaster
@Flukemaster 9 лет назад
Jeffrey Keck The thermocline is going to be at the same depth in that entire area, I look for where it meets a point or flat or something that offers the bass a place to hid and ambush it's food. I'll fish all the way to about 10ft above the thermocline depending on visibility.

First make sure you get a color unit. It will give you more information. If you can afford it or if you are willing to be patient and save a little more money then get a unit that has GPS and at least a Down Imaging. This will greatly improve your ability to locate fish holding structure and come back to it time and time again

I have a finder on a canoe. I used it for the first time this past Sunday. The GPS on the unit said we got up to around 3.8mph. I had it running at 200kHz and sometimes at 83kHz and saw virtually nothing. The lake is man-made. Though that day was really an unproductive day, I still got to use the new toy. Was I using the fishfinder wrong or is it just the time of the year? The water still isn't optimum temps(55-57f at the boat). I found some baitfish that the carp were jumping for but no signs of bass or other fish. At some times during the day, we went over something that appeared to be attached to the bottom but formed a dense area of segmented vertical lines(several feet tall). I thought it could be a tree or some old dead grass/vegetation. There were at times many echos but none in the form of arches or distinctive schools. I am still not sure of the best frequency to run the finder at such a slow travel speed.
@Flukemaster
@Flukemaster 9 лет назад
Quagmire88 Unless I'm fishing deeper than 12 ft I use my fish finder to find things that will hold fish. Like that tree you found. In shallow water, the cone is so narrow that the only thing the finder is good for is reading the bottom and finding cover. 83kHz is your widest angled signal so it is best in shallow water but it's not great.
@Quagmire88
@Quagmire88 9 лет назад
Oh ok that's what I was thinking. I think I am just having trouble differentiating the echos I am receiving. I know what the baitfish look like, and have recognized that right away. But I will just have to use it more to get a better sense of how it works. Oh, and the unit I have is the Lowrance Elite-5HDI Thanks for the quick response and all the vids. Keep them coming.

How can tell the bait schools from the trees.. Here in Florida we have clumps of floating grass and grass that is under the water, also there are water hyacinths that break off and float under the water that can not be seen from the surface. How can they be differentiated from bait schools?
@Flukemaster
@Flukemaster 9 лет назад
Thomas Harrell The best way I know how is to spend time checking what you see. Each object has it's differences. Milfoil doesn't look like hydrilla doesn't look like a tree, doesn't look like a bush. You just have to remember the subtle differences to be able to make an educated guess.

Get a kayak. Kayaks allow you to move very quickly (in comparison to wading, or fishing from a float tube. You can get going pretty quickly in a kayak, probably 12-20 miles per hour without too much effort). It allows you to fish deep water that you can't access from the shore. It is also far quieter than a noisy bass boat or jon boat with a trolling motor. It's also much cheaper! Yes sir, I'd rather fish off a kayak than a jon boat or bass boat, as long as i'm not fishing in h20 with gators

riff724 riff724 in the winter ur lake will do what they call "turn over" and when that happens the warmer water will be deeper. But on bright sunny days when the top of the water column warms the fish will move up to warmer water if it heats up enough.
