A lot of people are scared of knitting charts. They rather prefer written instructions. And while it might be a bit easier for beginners, I argue it's the exact same thing.
I want you to get away from treating knitting charts as charts. Treat it like very condensed written instructions written in a slightly different language you yet need to learn.
I know, learning a new language can be hard. But once you did, it will open up a whole new world to you. And the good part: Knittish doesn’t really require you to learn any grammar, it’s just a couple of words.
It will take time, and it may require you to sit down and really worm yourself into your first couple of charts. I am not saying it’s easy at first. But if you stick to it and practice, it will make your knitting life so much easier. Then you can look at a chart like this and instantly see how the design looks like AND know how to knit it.
You will never get that when you look at long lines of written instructions and it would be quite a pity if you didn’t make use of this important tool to improve your know knitting.

I'm currently in Japan and rediscovered knitting. My mom taught me back when I was in elementary school for our crafts class, but I haven't really knitted anything since highschool. I went to a hobby shop and decided to get some yarn to make a scarf just so I can get a feel for the craft again. This then escalated to me starting two projects and looking into information on how to knit more complex things, since I never really learned how to knit anything but a straight line. In the shop where I'm getting all my supplies there are a lot of books with patterns, but I didn't want to rush into getting anything without having a better understanding of how to make sense of them. Your videos have been a huge help on my journey and I feel more confident in getting myself a magazine with patterns and challanging myself to my first big project. I wanted to tell you all this, because I'm usually the type to just watch videos and not really comment a lot, however you are making a difference and I wanted to thank you. I'm sure there are many more lurkers like me, so even though it might seem like there are few people who are engaging with your content there are at least 10x more hore are silently appreciative.

I enjoy lace work. I found my very first chart very daunting but here's what I've found after just diving in and deciding that struggling a bit was okay: Every chart has a rhythm to it. For every knit2tog there'll be a yarn over somewhere to fix the balance. This is not just the case for lace charts. Every pattern will have a pattern, so to speak. I recommend: just dive in and find the rhythm to your pattern. It might be a bit hard at first but Norman is right: you'll soon learn the language and you'll be fine creating knitted magic! And don't forget to enjoy the ride!

Thank you for this video! I decided in January to learn how to knit at the age of 75! Where i live it was difficult to find a knitting class. So i went to the library and borrowed a knitting book for beginners and with chopsticks learned how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off! I was able to knit a cap in the round, with a few dropped stitches and also practice knitting making dishcloths. I’m trying to learn to read charts so i can knit with several colors to knit a ski hat! Thanks again for this video on learning to read knitting charts! One day hopefully I’ll be an accomplished knitter! You are an inspiration! Mahalo from Hawaii!

Norman, can't keep praising you. You're my olive branch, everytime I encounter an issue. For eg: Planned on taking the icelandic sweater pattern, which looked completely Greek and Latin for me. But I really wanted to understand, did lot of dry runs. Was totally unsuccessful. That's when I came back to your video, and as expected there you are explaining and made me realise the ease of going thru the patterns. However, shall comeback once a execute a successful Pattern knitting 🤞

I’ve been knitting for 17 years, but never tried knitting from a chart or tried any difficult color work because I have always felt like I’m not smart enough. Hi Norman, Wow You can write Japanese! I remember when I lived in the United States, when I saw a knitting book, there were only text and there were no charts at all… I was wondering how these people can knit by text only instructions 😳 In Japan, most instruction books are mainly charts and rarely explained only with letters. It’s good to learn and understand both text only and chart. 😊

Enjoyed your explanation of why knitting symbols and charts are like a language. I find seeing the pattern on a knitting chart gives a more spatial view of any repeated groups of stitches and how large they are. Good explanation, slow enough for beginners, detailed enough for more experienced knitters. Nice one.

It's fascinating to hear that people find charts to be the more complicated representation, I am much more likely to be overwhelmed in a complicated pattern by a bunch of stitch notation and repeats and stuff than a nice simple grid of exactly where all the stitches go...
