What is the difference in quality between this one and Mitutoyo 102-717 ? They both have the same measuring specifications but the one in this video is less expensive and has a different shape. What is the advantage of choosing one over the other?
Here is one of my interesting discoveries. In the imperial metrology side, they call this equipment a micrometer but it can not display a single micrometer at all. 😄 "Hey Sam, what was the drill bit size for 5/16-18 thread again?" "Err, Iet me have a look. It should be the 17/64 drill bit isn' it?" "Okey dokey! Thanks very much!" Come on Americans, even UK gave up the imperial past!😝😜. I do not intent to offend anyone here. On the contrary thanks very much for Mitutoyo America's efforts in sharing knowledges about metrology. I always wanted Mitutoyo China is doing the same thing. They don't and they won't.
Good question. Zero your micrometer. Now look at the first zero on the Vernier scale. The lines should match up. If you rotate the micrometer to look at the last zero on the Vernier scale, you will see it also lines up. This is because the 1 and 9 on the Vernier scales are the most commonly used. Either a reading is just above (1) or below (9) the value displayed on the thimble. Comparing the 0 or 1 value for the line of best fit is relatively easy because they are found next to each other. It would be more challenging if the 9 and 0 were on opposite sides of the micrometer. For convenience, a second zero line can be found next to the 9.
It is something to do with the imperial system. Wait until you see some architectural drawings on the imperial side. You need a doctor degree in mathmatics to understand there scale system, e.g. some drawing are made in 3/16" :1' scale.
