This was the best video I’ve watched for a beginner. No crazy background music, no nonsense, no confusing weird language. Just simple, easy to understand information! Thank you so much!
I read this title as “how to read a sewing pattern with lies” and thought, finally! A video for me. So many patterns seems to be rife with devious inaccuracies. 😅
Liesl is such a great teacher. Wished I could take a class in person. She explains things on a level that a beginner can understand. Thank you so very much Liesl for taking your personal time to teach the rest of us :-)
I've never made any clothing from a pattern, and my first project, I'm tackling a dress pattern from 1949! I'm intimidated, but this video helped me feel so much more at ease!! Glad I found it.
I'm in corporate education and I would be over the moon to have all of my facilitators & instructors deliver with the patience and clarity that Liesl demonstrates. I'm dabbling with the idea of beginning to sew and this video helped demystify the patterns that used to give me anxiety back in high school home ec.
I’ve only sewn by eye and measurements, and I’ve made a lot of clothing and even a prom dress. I have always bought patterns but I’ve been too scared and confused to use them. I found this so helpful thank you
How wonderful such a lovely lady she explained everything step by step and her voice was very kind and through. I could only sew pillows and curtains but now I feel confident to read and measure and start tackeling more easy sewing projects to move up when I have this down pretty good. Thank you so much I now understand alot more basics to sewing thanks to you.I don't know about anybody else but I really didn't want this video to end lol I wanted to see the little dress and bloomers finished 😊 God Bless 🙏💜
Not many people are natural teachers, but you! I’ve seem many videos on how to read a pattern, and yours is the most logically organized as well as smoothly executed. Great job!
Thank you so much. I was expecting patterns and their instructions to be way more comprehensive, but when I opened mine up I was completely lost. This information is invaluable.
You made it so easy to understand! I am a fashion student who gave up my passion and want to get back into garment constructing but it’s been years and I didn’t know where to start! This was a great refresher and so informative and clear! Thank you!
This is the best explanation for sewing a pattern that i have seen on you tube, especially for a beginner like me so thankyou for the upload its appreciated.
I came here for a beginner's lesson. Now, I know way more than I did before, but I'm also too soothed and relaxed by Liesl's explanation to get back up and work.
I just bought my 1st sewing machine. I haven't sewn since high school ( Home Ec) lol I'm looking forward to buying some fabric and beginning my journey!
Thank you so much for the video. I have to make my daughter's Halloween costume which aren't sold and have to modify an Alice in Wonderland dress pattern. Patterns have always confused me and you just cleared things up. I'll be watching more of your videos. Thanks again!
I was taught years ago to sew in 4-H, sadly I don't think I ever really learned to read a pattern. You've made it much easier to understand. Thank you!
I'm trying to sew my first dress and I had no idea how to read a pattern! Thank you so much for this; it is so helpful and comprehensive. You made it very easy to understand, especially for beginners! 💚
You're such a great teacher! Every time I thought of a question to ask, you answered it. Very thorough and clear instructions. Makes me feel confident that I can do this, too!
Very thorough tutorial. This made patterns so much less intimidating. I have taught myself through trial and error quite a bit with sewing but patterns always looked far out of my league. Now I feel like I can definitely tackle making my own clothing to fit my body and my style.
I have sewn several small things using fat quarters or basic cushion covers but wanted to move on to clothing. I have a simple top pattern that comprises of only 3 pieces, but was a bit daunted by everything before me! A quick search on led me to this video which has answered every single question that I had and more. Thank you for such a great video - clearly explained, not over complicated. Subscribed and can see me spending the rest of my Sunday evening watching more of your videos. Hubby's gonna have to cook dinner...
this is so so helpful i hope you have a happy new year i am a beginner and had no idea what to do when i pulled out that big piece of paper and i just have 2 questions do you have lessons and why do you need tracing paper
She mentioned she uses tracing paper is to preserve the original pattern (especially for kids patterns that have multiple sizes) so that as the child grows you may want to use the same style dress in a bigger size for the future. Or you might just love the pattern so much why waste it and have to go get another pattern.
This is the best video! You made it so simple and explained in such detail. Thank you so much! Also your voice is very calm which makes me feel like I can do this!
As a beginner quilter and someone who is ready to tackle her first skirt ever. This was really helpful because I didn't no any of that. I'm a size 22, in all three places. I know, I was told that Butterick Patterns are beginner friendly and had lots of plus size patterns. What say you Leslie? Thanks a bunch.
I'm so glad I found this! I've always been a quilter, so I figured I'd have no problem making my son a halloween costume this year...HAHA, it is a bit different! I was pretty stumped with the commercial pattern! This was so helpful...Thank you very much!
I'm so happy I clicked this lesson. Absolutely wonderful. I haven't sewn in over 40 years, and this tutorial has me so excited to get back into it. No more feeling intimidated. Thank you!
I watched you time and time again to make sure I get on how to understand and cut a pattern I am getting it between knitting ant chrochet this is only thing that calms me and keep my mind and brains stable in this crazed world. Thanks to all your information on sewing Greatly appreciated ❤️☺️
I have a question. I purchase a pattern and I am unable to understand which one I am supposed to cut. It has 20W-28W , but the size I am looking for is 14,but it doesnt give the width. So idk which one to trace or cut out.
THIS IS THE BEST VIDEO THAT I HAVE SEEN FOR BEGINNERS!!!! VERY INFORMATIVE!!!!! YOU EXPLAIN EVERY DETAIL AND WHY. I AM GOING TO SUBSCRIBE TODAY. I FELT LIKE I WAS IN SCHOOL. I DID NOT WANT TO MOVE MY EYES OFF OF THE VIDEO!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
You are just marvelous, just wonderful ...Thank for being so clear and real without making sewing a hard job. I have made several outfits already. thank you so much.
I'm just beginning this and reading patterns and filling these instructions is so complicated and confusing. I did t realize how difficult it would be... which is why I'm here.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I'm just a beginner and you have given me the confidence to try and make myself a simple dress. Can't wait to view your other video's. Thank you so much
I'm a little confused on the 2 inch difference in the bust measurement. If the high bust is smaller than the full bust measurement I should make the next biggest size?
Wow, didn't know creativebug has videos on RU-vid! I bought a few patterns & the pkg say sizes 6-18 or somewhere close, I am much smaller & thought I'd be able to just make them smaller. It's not looking that simple. Can I do this in any way? If not, any ideas where to find size 1 patterns? Love all your videos!
Do not compare what you wear in retail to whats on a pattern. Take your measurements and compare to the pattern package as well as the measurements printed on the pattern.
I searched and searched for a video to help me understand patterns. None could quite help me fully grasp, until I found this one! This is by far the best! Thank you so very much!!! I am so excited to learn to sew with patterns!!!
By far the best instructions I've encountered on youtube! I am a beginner and could not figure out the fabric layouts. You are wonderful at this, keep it up! Thank you for the detailed instructions.
I am pretty old and have been sewing, off and on all my life. I always had trouble fitting my upper body and never heard or knew about fitting for the upper bust. I always measured my bust and tried to alter as I sewed, the rest of the top. It was always a fiasco and lots of tears. I am/was a big size to begin with, and everything was too big. The shoulders didn't fit right and the neck was too big and everything fell off my shoulders. I felt like a freak. Now, I know that I'm a large cup size and size the rest of the top to fit and alter for the cup size. So much easier. What a lot of wasted energy and hurt. This has been very helpful. Some tips are good reminders, and some are new ideas and will make my sewing life easier. I'm ready to go. Thanks for posting. I've subscribed.
I have a question that no one seems to talk about.....do I have to wash and dry fabric before making something? And how do I do that? Will it shred and make a mess, do I put it in something, if I don’t wash it will it shrink too much? I just don’t know and all the videos I have watched says nothing about it. Please help.
I am happy that I ran across this. Now I can read my pattern and do it as you showed in the video. So well explained. Some things can't be explained in 10 minutes. It was worth watching. Thanks so much!!!!!!
I have watched countless other videos on sewing patterns. This is by far the most clear and detailed. I think I'm finally ready to use this pattern I've intimidated to open up. Thank you!!
This is so extremely helpful. I'm teaching myself how to sew and patterns scare me, so this unravels the mystery quite efficiently. Thank you very much!
