How to Read a Tape Measure Made REALLY Easy
I cover how to read the fractions on the tape measure. I start with a stick with some lines on it a work up to the lines on a tape measure. I give a practical explanation of how to look at the lines and their relationships to one another. I hope this little video helps.

Make Build Modify fwiw, I still get suggestions for channels I unsubbed from years ago. :) I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I actually prefer short videos. Sitting down to watch three 7 minute videos is less intimidating than watching one 18 minute video. I end up saving up the long videos for a time when I’d normally watch TV rather than just fitting them into my breaks throughout my day.

Everyone saying they feel dumb haha, but in reality it’s because when you look at so many lines at once (at least imo) it overwhelms your brain and makes it hard to realize how simple it actually is and a video like this just puts that into perspective.

I was embarrassed and thought I was the only one who didn't completely understand a tape measure. I've never seen anyone explain something that seems difficult but made simple. This has made my life so much easier. As a woman living by myself; when something tears up, I have to figure out how to fix myself. This has helped me tremendously. Thank you so much.

There's lots of men out there that can't read a tape measure myself included. If u don't or never used one u can't be expected to just pick it up an understand it 🤷.

Metric is easier for most things. But here in the states it makes for a nightmare because of conversions and such for some people. Most of our tooling her is imperial, but metric is slowly becoming available more often.

Make Build Modify I was wondering about the construction industry. A residential framer once told me that his crew used tape measures very infrequently because so many of the imperial lumber component dimensions are either multiplied or divided so easily. What are your thoughts about that aspect?

@@WorksbySolo it depends. If there is a cut guy and a layout guy then the other guys shouldn't have to measure very much. They'd just be assembling.

Ok so as someone with severe adhd and dyslexia this video was almost a stem because of how well you explained this! This video before this the guy was calling everyone idiots for not knowing how to read a tape measure it just bothered me bc I genuinely didn’t know how and was looking it up bc it was a job requirement that I applied for so I wanted to learn! As a handy-gal who does a lot of home repairs myself, it always took me longer to complete a project because I didn't understand how to read a tape measurer. Hi Justin! I have never really grasped how to read a tape measure. I have recently gotten into woodwork and I've been using the method you showed in your video....transferring the measurement... just getting by. I have watched videos about reading a tape measure, but yours by far is the best one for me, and now with some practice I think I will be pretty solid with reading a tape measure now. Thank you so much. I also enjoyed the Pro tips video as well.

Thinking about getting into a welding position. Thank you for making this simple. It's so sad that I never saw a tap measurer in school. Should be mandatory reintroduced this every year to refresh students mind. Then more kids might go spend money on a tap measure and building material instead of a video game.

​@@NelzNelzon I think it's important to make the distinction between "lines on a stick" only, and the combination of the "lines on a stick" within the limitations of a task. This is why systems are created. Systems are designed for a particular use and are only useful with the confines of their definitions. Comparing systems for superiority is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole and saying that one or the other is better. I would say that the metric system is much more intuitive and convenient at translating linear units to volume or relative heat, etc. Plus, it's easier to use with scientific notation. Both systems are base 10 (meaning the characters 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 are used). The metric has fewer linear units (this is a good thing), but instead has a self-similar relationship relative to meters with added prefixes. The imperial system has inches, feet, yards, chains, furlongs, miles and more (too complicated). But for the context of the conversation we're talking about building things. So, inches and feet are the primary units of concern as a system. The imperial system is just a different size unit if you consider inches only. The machining industry uses hundredths and thousandths of an inch to gain the same math advantages (for this type of operation) as the metric system. Fractional math can be done with the metric system but the factors don't line up with the delineated units as readily. 12 has 1,2,3,4,6,12 as factors. 10 only has 1,2,5,10. This is a boon for the construction industry (especially mental math in the field) because regular divisions within a whole number while landing on exact fractional delineations becomes easier. Dividing a foot into 2,3,4,6,12, all land on the inch lines. When fractions of an inch are added (which are just a halving) it allows for further regular divisions always landing on a delineation. This allows for dividing a foot into as many divisions by 2 as you like 2,4,3,4,6,8,12,16,24,32,48, 96.... Because of fractions (to a resolution of 1/16ths) 10 inches cans be divided into 2,4,5,8,10,16,20,32 all landing on demarcations. In my experience this is more than enough for typical construction/making needs. Anything more would be venturing into the land of diminishing returns. The metric system can be divided using a calculator to an adequate degree, but so can any other system. The benefits of the imperial system come from the combination of the fractional rule and the construction convention together *_as a system_*. It provides the platform for quick mental math and moving on with the production. There are more advantages when laying out floor plans. The relative feet and inches can be used to reduce cognitive load. The idea is to be thinking about your surroundings, safety and production; fewer metal calculations are better in this environment. Maybe I should do a video on the topic, idk. Also, roof framing is slope based which can be expressed as a fraction (rise over run) in any system. So, the fractional system makes for easy calculations. I don't know if the roof framers that use the metric system use degrees or rise/run. I sure would like to work with a metric roof framer just to learn their methods.

I understand the system. But I don't understand why it's still in use lol. Metric seems SO MUCH easier and you probably don't need more precision than a millimeter on hand measuring hahah!

Well, almost all of the structures in North America used material that follow the imperial convention. Plus, all of the suppliers deal in materials to match. So, building and repairing with the metric system would be problematic. Plus, almost the entire building code is referenced in non-metric standard. But, there are some things heading in the direction of metric. I personally don't care either way. I use what works for the application. There are some advantages to the imperial system while roof framing the fractional math makes it easier to do mental math relative to the slope of the roof. And while doing layout on the floor for wall framing relative measurements become very handy and fast. There are other things about the imperial system, however, that are unnecessarily confusing to the uninitiated with no real immediate advantage. Maybe I should do a video on the pros and cons.

Spoke to this guy last night about a job, asked if I could read a tape. My previous job we used tapes all the time installing gutters. Of course I can’t read a tape. Most of the time I would wing it, ask someone else, mark it and transfer, or just use metric because it’s way easier. Gave up Fahrenheit awhile ago because Celsius is simple and makes far more sense with 0 being freezing. How is it freezing outside if there’s 32 degrees floating around. Anyways, you just saved me for bluffing that I could read a tape, even though I was taught in middle school and used a tape for the last year. I appreciate you.

Trying to get into a trade, “learned” how to read rulers and measure in school but not all kids take it to serious (I was one of them) but now what I got taught in a week in school I learned just as easy in a couple minutes, thank you

In 57 yrs I have never understood this until now. It was a family joke that my father and brothers always teased me about. My daddy was a contractor and all 3 of us kids worked for him from time we could walk. I used the excuse I was a girl, lol. I helped build homes from the ground up. My father and brothers got used to me telling them something was 8 inches and 3 of those little black lines 😂😂😂.

I just started a new job where i have to prep orders measuring and cutting with a company tape measure that has only the inch marks on it. i never learned how to read a tap measure before.
