It's Tutorial Thursday! Your favorite day of the week 😆 In today's tutorial we're going to be going over how to read a crochet diagram. We'll be going over some of the tips that I mentioned on Tuesday and I'll be working a full diagram with you at the end of the video. Feel free to crochet along with me if it helps you learn better! I'm going to tell you know that it's pretty lengthy, but there's a lot to know about diagrams! I probably could have talked for another hour 😂 Below I'll list some timestamps in case you want to skip around to different sections. Let me know if you have any questions!
00:00 - Introduction to Diagrams
01:34 - Basic Chart Symbols
05:10 - Reading a diagram row by row
11:37 - Reading a diagram in the round
14:04 - Crocheting a swatch using a diagram

When you using a diagram, how does one distinguish between making a stitch in a space as opposed to into a stitch?

Thank you so much for this! My grandma taught me years ago basic crocheting, but never how to read a chart. Now, I'm teaching myself (and now my kids) how to crochet and this is so helpful. I was very nervous about reading patterns and charts and this has helped explain things so much!

Thank you for this wonderful tutorial. I am a knitter and am trying to learn how to crochet some edge trim for knitting projects. I found a beautiful book of border, but there are no basic instructions on how to read the charts. This video is the perfect lesson on chart reading. I am still struggling with knowing when to work into the space versus a stitch, but I think that will become more obvious as I practice.

Excellent tutorial... Your an amazing teacher especially for a newbie like me in the crochet world. In my opinion you are one of the handful of icons in the business and some new like me can learn a lot from. So my official thank you for all your teachings. I do have one question I have watched a small amount of "learning to reading diagrams" tutorials and I have yet to find one that tells me how to know if and when to crochet into the chsp or into the CH st itself. Could you by chance give me some pointers on when reading a diagram with no written instructions or non-English instructions how to tell if the st goes into the CH st or chsp?! Again your awesome and thank you

Thank you so much for this. You made what I thought was the most complicated code appear so easy. I have one question. When you see the chain oval shape, and say you have to work a double crochet into it, if there is a chain space, how do you know if you are meant to go into the chain itself or into the chain space. Thank you.

@alliecat1941

i was wondering why it is you have to crochet into the chain space instead of directly into the chain stitch. Is it to make that cross pattern?
@SigoniMacaroni
@SigoniMacaroni 2 года назад
Technically, you could do either one, but it usually means into the space and not the actual chain. Each way makes the finished project look different so it just depends on the pattern.

I really do appreciate this tutorial and I learned a lot. I have justed starter crocheting from diagram and since I am lefthanded, it makes it à little more complicated. I found a diagram that I have tried to figure out, crocheting back and forth but it has no instructions as to combine the rows so there I am stuck. Do you have any suggestions?

To the second row why I work to the chain space and not to the chain itself; The symbol shows that I work in the chain not in the space. At least that is how I would read it. How i can tell the difference; Thank you.
@SigoniMacaroni
@SigoniMacaroni 2 года назад
It's more of a personal preference. Usually it means to work into the space and not the stitch. It's sort of an unwritten rule. It would also create a different look if you chose to work into the actual chain rather than the chain space. So it depends on the pattern you're working and your personal preference

Hey, if the oval is that thin, what is the line going the same direction as the oval because I thought the line is a chain at least in all the directions I’ve read that’s what means a chain now what about the oval that goes lengthwise from top to bottom, not side to side well maybe I should watch the rest of your video before I comment OK I’m gonna finish watching

Is it weird that I taught myself how to read the diagrams I didn’t even really go into like the separate charts explaining what each stitch was. I just kind of knew I mean for me it was super easy but other people it might not be is that weird to you because my mom thought it was really weird that I just knew what each symbol meant without having to really study it. I was like well it’s kind of self-explanatory if an X would be the smaller one the line would be a chain I mean to me that’s super simple to go up from there the only ones I had any issues with was like the big circle well I would say oval and then which one meant like back post or front post but other than that I was OK and I know the difference now in all of them and matter fact, I preferred to use a diagram then written instructions

What does a slip knot look like in a diagram? Is it the smae as a slip stich?
@SigoniMacaroni
@SigoniMacaroni 2 года назад
The slip knot isn’t included in the diagram, just like they don’t include it in a written pattern. Patterns are written like you already know to begin with a slip knot

This is my question too, how do you tell if it's into a stitch or into a space that's how I would put it. As the first set of dc in the round looked like it would be in stitches but was into a space
@greebo9859
@greebo9859 3 года назад
I just found this online 'crochet diagrams generally do not indicate whether you work into a stitch or into a chain space between stitches. A common example of where this comes up is in the stitch diagram for a classic granny square, where you would work into the chain spaces; it is only through additional written instructions or your experience with the craft that you would know to work into the chain space instead of directly into the stitch. For that reason, it's important to take a look at the written instructions if they are available.'

You said to follow the top hat but you are doing it by the bottom of the cross not the top
@mdeville5851
@mdeville5851 3 года назад
No :) What she is doing is following the top on the stitch, and then following down the staff of the stitch symbol in order to see where the bottom of that stitch needs to go. Crochet stitches are built from the bottom up. So both parts are relevant in a graph. But to know which stitch to start next, you find the top hat first, assess what kind of stitch it will be, then follow it down to find which previous stitch to place it into. :)
