Just discovered your channel. Great vibes, talks about books, and great travels. I just started reading myself. Currently diving into fantasy, which I’m in love.
@@PeterOlszewski no worries! Do you have any tips on getting off your phone btw? I read a lot but have recently gotten addicted to my phone and wonder if you have any tricks to help? 😅 I keep buying books I don’t get to reading coz of it
@@Chillestchicken I’m definitely not the best person to ask because I’m on my phone quite a bit. 😂 I guess my best advice would be getting rid of different social medias like tiktok or insta. I believe that a lot more short form content is more addicting than the long form content. RU-vid long form content has the added benefit of housing more information so I do think it’s more beneficial from a learning standpoint and I find that a lot of short form content is for time wasting.
@@PeterOlszewski thanks for the thorough answer dude! I keep deleting social media apps but always find a way to consume short form content- suddenly RU-vid has it, then another app does. It’s like you can’t get away from it 😅 But thanks for the advice man
Love the video! I finished my undergrad in English lit last year and having read a fair few classics the main thing I’ve come to appreciate is the writing itself. You’re right about pacing being off compared to modern reads but in terms of the artistry of the writing, classics are so great! Hope that doesn’t sound too pretentious lol
I recently started to read classic novels too. There is this TV show adapting the novel The Count of Monte Cristo and it helped motivate me to tackle the book. I absolutely love it! I did have to train my brain to the old English way of talking. It didn't take long though and the plot is very engaging. It's a massive book but it's a very good book to help start someone into reading classics.
@PeterOlszewski it really is a good book. It reads like a TV show with each chapter being its own episode and each episode ends on a cliffhanger. If you do read it I highly recommend reading the Penguin Classic Robin Buss translation. He did an excellent job capturing Dumas's writing style but writing it in a classic style that almost reads like modern. It makes it incredibly accessible for any reader.
Keep at this RU-vid thing young man. You got some great vibes, good reads, excellent personality and great editing. Hope to see loads of success in your future, god bless.
Hi, I’ve been aspiring to write for a living, and just want to say I think the most comforting and good reads lie in Hemingway! Anyway, love your channel
@@PeterOlszewski no problem! Thank you for taking an interest in my comment, if it’s not too much to say but I think his best book is either Fiesta or the old man and the sea (always good starting books for mr Hemingway lol)
I've started sprinkling classics into my reading so loved this! I just read H. G. Wells The Invisible Man and it just wasn't for me. Recently really enjoyed Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Also, Octavia E. Butler has skyrocketed to becoming my favorite author! This has convinced me to give H. G. Wells another chance, being that all of these are similar sci-fi/speculative fiction energy. Thanks Peter!
great video as always! never thought of getting into classics but will give it a go. also, thanks to you, next week i’m going to be getting pines and dark matter so i’m super hyped. can’t wait for more and hope you’re doing well :)
I’ve started alternating between reading classics and then reading the more modern books I initially want to read. Some I really enjoy - the great gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald I read last week, and then some I really didn’t like - heart of darkness by Joseph Conrad I read this week. I think it’s a good balance for me in finding motivation, like if I didn’t enjoy a classic, I’m often glad I read it, but I have something to look forward to in reading a more modern book next whilst I look for the next classic.
Based on your taste on books, I would like to recommend for you to read some Japanese fiction - Haruki Murakami's books mainly (if you haven't read them before). It would be a new and interesting genre for you to explore!
I have only read Kafka on the Shore and Days in the Morisaki Bookstore. Both I really enjoyed! I definitely want to explore them more. I think next I will read Norwegian Woods.
I have been scared of reading classics but I’m just getting back my attention span to an ideal level to read modern books. It will a while before classics lol. Loved the video! Can you please do a bookshelf tour someday? Would love to see your collection!
Love that you’re reading classics! If you liked the Time Machine you should read Brave New World next, it’s a similar futuristic dystopia with really cool ideas (its short ;) I find it sort of annoying when classics have a frame story structure haha, I don’t care about the people outside the story who are hearing it.
I try to do the same with classics. I recently took a break from my typical fantasy and really enjoyed Great Expectations. I’m stuck on a current modern classic though that I’m tempted to DNF, Blood Meridian.
Re: 'The Time Machine' - it's not really about global warming - the concept didn't exist then Wells was writing. It's more about the fact that he's travelled so far into the future that the sun is dying and so expanding, eventually to engulf the planet.
It really just depends. I typically have work in the mornings at 9 so I get up at 7 to have an hr and a half to read and drink my coffee before. Then usually I will read in the evenings. I have been doing more traveling lately and I’m going back to college so I feel like I read significantly less this week. It’s honestly also depends how into a book I am as well because if I’m hooked I will not be putting it down. 😅
I started the War of the Worlds by HG Wells a few years ago and just could not get through it, it was so exhausting to read. Maybe it was the german translation and I should try reading the original??
You should definitely give it another try. At least the version I read was the unabridged version and I enjoyed it. But I can see where you found it to be exhausting. It is a bit slow at times.
i love classic novels but they absolutely must be read on my kindle so i can click on every 5th word for a definition for yet another way of saying "silly" or "intelligent" to add to my repertoire
