Martin is so sadistic with how he handled Robb’s death. He has him craft up this kinda brilliant plan to take back the north and gives this illusion that Robb’s about to get a sizable force back on his side. He gives just enough to make you think Robb’s still in this fight and he can recover from his mistakes, then a few chapters later he’s brutally killed, his most loyal followers are killed or captured and his army is decimated, along with the hopes and dreams of the reader lol
your opinion of feast and dance as these „bloated set-up pieces“ is the usual response from first time readers. they all definitely reward re-reading so much because they not only tell you what‘s happening, they tell you what has happened way back (like all the world building lore) and much more important - they tell you what will happen. so recognizing that martin‘s foreshadowing and all those secrets are so cleverly hinted and openly hidden opens a whole new rabbit hole. the hole we are sitting in since how many years. great vlogs
No idea how many pages the english books have but the german ones have about 6780pages. So if you need one minute per page (no idea how fast you can read) that would be 16.5 hrs per day for 7 days in a row. That would be crazy, hard to imagine.
I started the War of the Worlds by HG Wells a few years ago and just could not get through it, it was so exhausting to read. Maybe it was the german translation and I should try reading the original??
You should definitely give it another try. At least the version I read was the unabridged version and I enjoyed it. But I can see where you found it to be exhausting. It is a bit slow at times.

I recently started to read classic novels too. There is this TV show adapting the novel The Count of Monte Cristo and it helped motivate me to tackle the book. I absolutely love it! I did have to train my brain to the old English way of talking. It didn't take long though and the plot is very engaging. It's a massive book but it's a very good book to help start someone into reading classics.
@PeterOlszewski it really is a good book. It reads like a TV show with each chapter being its own episode and each episode ends on a cliffhanger. If you do read it I highly recommend reading the Penguin Classic Robin Buss translation. He did an excellent job capturing Dumas's writing style but writing it in a classic style that almost reads like modern. It makes it incredibly accessible for any reader.
There seems to be a lot that you missed. The things you were surprised by, like the wolf dreams, have been happening since the first book and not just jon and bran but arya also. The three eyed crow tells bran that he will fly in the first book as well.
I think reading them together fo rthe first time is a problem. George had to separate the books because they were too long, so he specifically did it in a way where pacing between the stories wouldn't be interrupted. Once he separated them, he added chapters and such, mainly to damce I suspect, which caused it to be a but slower oaced than perhaps originally intended, and I think thay really hurts feast which on its own is a great book and was more"done" before the split, so when you shove dance and its added elements Gerge wrote later with only damce in mind and not Feast, it causes Feasts story to be worse for it in terms of pacing.
You should try and slam through Outlander next. Tbh I haven’t read either series but I feel that Outlander is the other big book series people rave over. I have seen the show for both tho and although very different they’re both AMAZING!! (Other than Season 3 of outlander and season 8 of GOT)
@@PeterOlszewski the description may be misleading but id highly recommend! Its not as sci-fi or time travel-y as it may sound. It’s a very small part of the story and the lore behind it is within ancient culture and rituals rather than witchcraft or aliens or something wild.
