It’s pretty common to see service notices on the New York Subway. Service changes are pretty common on the weekend and late evenings (and sometimes even during the weekdays). So there is a good chance you will run into a disruption to your subway commute sooner or later. In this video, we are going to break down a recent change service I found over the weekend (in particular the F and G subway trains). The F train runs through a good portion of Queens through a lot of Hispanic neighborhoods and communities and through Manhattan and Brooklyn. The G train runs crosstown through a good portion of Brooklyn’s Polish neighborhoods and communities. Hope this helps in understanding subway alerts and service notices. Thanks for watching!

Can we start a petition to have you take over signage for the MTA? Thanks Thea! You Yelp relieve so much anxiety before a trip!

Exactly! If you watch her Subway beginners guide you see she has great ideas for signage.

Very informative video. I'd like to thank you for dissecting the planned service changes that the MTA posts up in the stations. Also to add conductors, train operators and other MTA staff will make announcements regarding those service changes on the train. I'm work for the MTA and I know for many people It is so overwhelming how to get from point A to point B. I try to take my time to explain it very simply to them and repeat it as necessary. Sometimes we have a problem of customers not listening to or playing attention to those changes so that also adds to the confusion sometimes. Otherwise a very informative video. One piece of advice Don't be intimidated by the service changes you just have to Plan very carefully where you're going and take these service changes into account and give yourself as much time for that. And if anything just ask a MTA worker

Thank you for this explainer! I rewatched it this morning. The part I've never quite understood is when the shuttle bus replaces part of a line, but goes a slightly different route than (either) replaced train. Like in your example, the bus goes Jay-st -> Hoyt -> shared F/G stops. But neither train goes to both Jay St and Hoyt. Idk why but when this happens it always confuses me. Sometimes I see a subway alert and I just nope out and take a different train line. Thank you for laying out the system 🙏🙌 Underground School Zone!!! 😃🏫🚇

Thanks for watching! I really wish they used infographics for all their signs. It's clearer and could potentially eliminate having to translate everything in several languages.

Underground school zone ;) I am still confused by these service changes signs and I'm a New Yorker.. albeit not in the city directly, a commuter. I'll try to analyze it a little closer. Thanks for this informative video!

I think this video misses one important point: The F train is actually running between Jay Street and Fourth Avenue but it skips the three stops in between. So you might take the A or C from Hoyt Street to Jay Street and transfer there to the F in order to reach stations from Fourth Avenue onwards.

I monitor the subways every friday night for weekend advisories & every sunday night for weekday advisories. Just recently, I added PATH, LIRR, Metro North, & NJ Transit. I do summaries for myself & instagram. I’ll even do them on twitch/youtube. I will tell you, it’s very wordy & I didn’t even get into the unexpected issues like NYPD activity, track issues, signal issues, train issues, etc. The summaries do not replace the info & maps in their official websites, but at least it keeps things simplified & easier to absorb.

Moscow: We are closing the busiest line of the system but here is a map with all info on a big yellow-red poster. NY: Hey, we will maintain a line, so read an A4 paper with lots of symbols nobody understands. It's your problem if you miss it.

I like your explanations about how to interpret service changes, great job, nicely done graphics! But you exaggerate very badly what happens on weekends. When in New York I used the subway on weekends too, and 80% of the time I wasn't affected at all. Sometimes a cab, Uber or bus are needed alternatives but but most of the time you will be ok. No need for panic.

All your videos are very useful for everybody thanks for your effort ....Just a question please it's a possibility to use a subway with a luggage dimension of 70cm x50 cm x 20cm? or what are the permissible back dimensions?
@UrbanCaffeine
@UrbanCaffeine 2 года назад
Hi there! You can bring any size luggage. I've seen people bring a mattress on the subway. Lol.😂 As long as you are able to carry your luggage up and down stairs, you should be fine. If you haven't seen my video on bringing luggage to the subway here'a a link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mB1dYcWhB8Q.html Good luck and hope you have a great trip!

Feeling so thankful I’ve never had to deal with this when visiting NYC. However, still remember the time trying to get back to the city from the US Open and getting us completely lost because I didn’t know the correct direction or what train skipped stops while which one did every stop. 😂😂😂 Also “Underground School Zone”?

Something tells me that she isn't a native New Yorker. I mean, staying in your neighborhood because of service changes indicates a sheltered life. That and understanding the service changes is easy as king as you're not totally illiterate. It really ain't that hard.

Most americans will be even more clueless. Most americans don't grow up with transit and don't know how to navigate a system. That being said the MTA is especially bad about communication . I've felt more informed in Tokyo - without speaking japanese!
